'K, so I just recently got around to watching "The Illusionist", and I was immediately captivated by its darkly alluring storyline and unique setting. I got the inspirational juices flowing like a fiend right now, and I just had to recreate an Rp based on the movie right now. Of course, I changed a lot of (in other words, most of) the core storyline up to better suit my vision, mostly to where the main characters will be three magicians instead of just one, plus some different drama rubbish to deal with.

I'll be playing one of the magicians, of course, and anybody else who'll wanna play them will have first dibs once I proclaim the Rp officially "open".

Here's the gist of everything:

-------------------------------------------

> The setting is New York City in the early 1900's, some ten-odd years before the Great Depression.

> The "Magician Three" - Patrick O'Gallagher, Viktor Milosovici, and Edward "Eddie" Dawkins - once obscure traveling performers, have recently invested in a decrepit old theatre on Fifth Avenue.

> Each man has his own respective area of talent regarding magic: Patrick is the logical mastermind, mostly dealing with card tricks and hypnotism and the like; Viktor is the master of illusion, from sleight-of-hand to ensnaring the unwary mind to see things that aren't there; and Eddie is the one and only escape artist.

> The Rp will first take place at the grand opening of "Le théâtre de Prodiges", or "Theatre of Wonders", about ten hours before the big debut at ten o' clock.

The Characters in a Nutshell:

---------------------------------------------

> Anyone who can prove their literacy to me can lay claim to either Patrick, Eddie (I'll be playing Viktor) or any of the supporting characters. The simple rule to this is that only one person can play one of the magicians or up to two of the supporting characters, or one magician and two supporting characters. If you want to play one of the Magician Three, however, you'll need to impress me beforehand, as I'm quite picky about who's going to be manipulating their personalities and such.

> Because I'm awfully cliché, three of the main supporting characters are going to be a trio of lovely maidens who eventually fall for their choice man, although it won't automatically be vice-versa, y'see. I'm also going to incorporate the "only one character" rule here, just so that everyone will get the chance to have a face-to-face encounter with the main characters and thus have a role in the big scheme of things.

> As for the other characters that will be available, you have the ready option to create your very own, or you can have the privelege of playing the villain. But that having been said, let's talk about the villain for a moment: Chester Shillock, the lapdog of the mayor (oh my gawd, yes, I know I am just so cliché). Anyway, Chester and Franklin Cavileer (the mayor) have been buddies since childhood, and thus have formed quite the intimate (nonsexual, plzkthx) and trustful relationship. Cruel, condescending and calculating, Chester is what you'd call a concrete realist, one who only believes in the things you can see with your eyes and can be logically explained; things that can be dissected and studied piece by piece, so to speak. He has an intense dislike for theology and all things that have to do with magic - or "witchcraft" as he calls it - so you can easily imagine how he reacted when the news of the new theatre being opened was brought before him. Basically, he wants whoever's running the theatre shut down, and he'll pull out all the stops to do so.

Open Characters

-----------------------------

Patrick O'Gallagher

Nickname(s): "St. Patty", Eddie's fond little nickname for the Irishman.
Age: 36 yrs.
Gender: Male.
Height: 5'8".
Weight: 289 lbs.
Build: Rotund, stocky.
Ethnicity: Caucasian; Irish-American.
Magic Stereotype: Logical Mastermind.
Personality: Cheerful, optimistic, cunning, hard-working, kind-hearted.

Brief History: Patrick's parents immigrated from Ireland to America in the late 1800's, before he was born. As a family they lived in mild poverty for a while in the city before Patrick struck out on his own to find himself a trade. He eventually found work in the printing industry, but soon discovered that no real money was to be had by it. Some years later he came to the realization that his true abilities lied with magic as opposed to printing, and instead chose to pursue that obscure line of work, first starting out as a humble street performer to earn his bread.

As it were, he soon happened upon a lad of latent magical talent, but also penniless as can be and an orphan to boot. Streetwise with a snarky sense of humor, and going by the name of "Eddie", the boy immediately rubbed off on Patrick, who took no time in taking him under his wing in the noble art of magic.

At the turn of the century they boarded a boat and set sail across the Atlantic Sea to visit far-off European countries, where they could further pursue their chosen careers. From Spain to France to England and Austria they traversed, but it was in the dark, mysterious land of Romania where they first met the equally dark and mysterious young man dubbed "Viktor". It became obvious that he too was quite accomplished with magic, and with a bit of relentless goading and a wide variety of bribery they eventually convinced him to tag along back to the States to begin life anew.

*To play this character, you must send me via PM a detailed description of how you think this character's appearance is, and a small Rp sample of everyday life for him. Good luck!*

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edward Dawkins

Nickname(s): Eddie, Lad, Boyo - strictly by Patrick. Viktor just addresses him by his proper first name.
Age: 16 yrs.
Gender: Male.
Height: 5'7".
Weight: 130 lbs.
Build: Wiry, lean, slight.
Ethnicity: Caucasian; American.
Magic Stereotype: Escape Artist Extraordinare.
Personality: Goofy, jesting, energetic, sarcastic, flippant.

Brief History: Since the beginning of his life the poor kid hasn't had a single break. Born right into irreversible poverty and virtual lack of parentage (his father had died from disease some years ago and his mother passed during childbirth), one would assume that his mental scars go deep. And you would be wrong. Eddie's astounding manner of perserverance has allowed him to harbor a jeering outlook on life, not a single day feeling sorry for himself but cultivating his resources in order to survive on the unforgiving city streets.

It was at the ripe age of nine that Eddie first discovered his natural inclination toward magic. It was subtle at first, beginning with the uncanny ability to untangle any knot, and then progressing to being able to escape any binding or other type of hindrance. Call him a younger version of Howard Houdini, if you will.

He too was a street performer for a certain number of years, working off his unbelievable feats in order to make a living, albeit small. It wasn't long after that another magician by the name of Patrick O'Gallagher, the rosy-cheeked Irishman, introduced himself, and fell into the role of "surrogate father" to the boy, teaching him all he knew.

And then Europe, blah blah blah (see Patrick's profile for more info on this).

*To play this character, likewise PM me with a detailed description on what you believe his appearance to be, and a suitable Rp sample of him going about everyday life*

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Irene MacIntyre

Nicknames: Ira, My Handsome Irish Beauty (Patrick).
Age: 35 yrs.
Gender: Female.
Height: 5'9".
Weight: 130 lbs.
Build: Sturdy, Graceful, Refined, Generous in the bosom and hips.
Ethnicity: Caucasian; Irish-American.
Personality: Gentle, Educated, Civilized, Courteous, Compassionate.

Brief Overview: Like Patrick, Irene's parents both immigrated to America some time before she was born. Her father working at the paper mill, money was considerably tight during her younger years, so when she came of working age she went off to labor as a seamstress at a factory in order to aid their finances.

When Irene's father died from typhoid fever some years later, she quit her job at the factory and returned home to support her mother, and they continued to live in shambles until the year 1905, when her mother too passed from perpetual stress and sorrow for her late husband.

Afterward, she made her living by working in various shops until the new theatre opened up on Fifth Avenue, where it was rumoured that three talented magicians were to begin performing. In due time, she acquired the prestigious job of stage manager/financial advisor/costume maker.

*To play this character, PM me with a brief physical description of her and a brief Rp sample. Also note: She has a thing for Patrick, and Patrick feels much the same for her, although they are not officially "together", just harmlessly flirting for now.*

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chester Shillock

Nickname(s): Tight-arse.
Age: 35 yrs.
Gender: Male.
Height: 5'9".
Weight: 284 lbs.
Build: Stocky, robust, thick-limbed.
Ethnicity: Caucasian; American.
Personality: a**l, Realistic, Serpentine Cunning, Shrewd, Malignant.

Brief Overview: Refer to top of page, sorta.

*To play this character, well... you know what to do, I'm assuming.*

Taken Characters

Elizabeth Chandler

Nickname(s): Liz, Lizzy, Eliza, Chickadee (Eddie).
Age: 15 yrs.
Gender: Female.
Height: 5'6".
Weight: 110 lbs.
Build: Twiggy, skinny, delicate, but also athletic.
Ethnicity: Caucasian; American.
Personality: Shy, quiet, soft-spoken, timid, nervous.

Brief Overview: Quite the opposite of Edward, Elizabeth is not at all outspoken and is content to remain a close-booked introvert. That isn't to say she doesn't enjoy the company of people, but she is much happier to listen rather than speak when in the company of others.

She has a keen interest in magic, after having attended the Magician Three's first show, and has tossed aside her previous aspiration to become a scientist in favor of one day becoming a magician also. ...She's not very good at it, granted, but that says nothing of her arduous persistence to accomplish her goal. She is quite taken with Eddie, is good friends with Patrick, and is petrified of Viktor (she's convinced he's a vampire).

> This character is to be played by deFig <

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Viktor Milosovici

Nickname(s): Veektohr, Vikky, Dracula (all founded by Eddie).
Age: 26 yrs.
Gender: Male.
Height: 6'3".
Weight: 140 lbs. (Emaciated).
Build: Tall, scrawny.
Ethnicity: Caucasian; Romanian.
Personality: Sullen, anti-social, curt, pessimistic, moody.

Brief History: Viktor was born in the small Theocracy-governed town of Suceava in the Transylvanian region of Romania. At the start of his life Viktor's parents gave him away to the church to be raised, as they had no want of a child in that period of time; he never got to meet them, and his childhood was instead committed entirely to the Catholic religion. As an adolescent he studied language, scriptures, rosaries, philosophy, morals, and the religion's European history under the watchful eye of Father Georghiou. To all knowledge he seemed a devoted, servile young boy, and he was.

But Viktor also had a secret.

From a young age he could seem to create things out of thin air, and even bend the very laws of nature to the breaking point. Some of these things were mere illusion, but some weren't. Manipulating reality was his gift, and his curse.

It soon came out that the boy had these strange abilities, and the leaders of the church were in a deadlock at deciding whether this was the work of God, or the devil. They never reached their conclusion, however, for at the ripe age of sixteen Viktor left the church forever and traveled abroad Romania as a traveling magician of sorts, though more fancied as a lone gypsy.

Other: Despite his appearance, Viktor is very religious, and will go apeshit on anyone who disses God. His relationship with the other two magicians is more mutual than anything, although he is particularly nettled by Eddie, who has taken a liking to calling him a variety of nasty little nicknames. He has a more polite deference toward Patrick, but is also incensed at the times when the Irishman tries to "connect" with him. His history, for the most part, he keeps to himself, excluding the fact that he was once an acolyte of the Catholic church.

He is fluent in Latin, Italian, Russian, English, and Romanian, his native language. He has a distinct accent when speaking English, mostly to where he slurs his "r's". Though quite fluent in English, there are those times when he gets stuck on a particularly difficult word, such as "remembrance". Damn those "r's".

> This character is to be played by myself, iZiggie <

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mary Hawthorne

Nickname(s): Mare, That Annoying Girl (Viktor).
Age: 21 yrs.
Gender: Female.
Height: 5'8".
Weight: 125 lbs.
Build: Slender, statuesque, trim.
Ethnicity: Caucasian; American.
Personality: A perfectionist, cleanly, organized, intelligent, curt, self-conscious.

Brief Overview: Mary works as a fresh-from-college journalist for a printing company on Fifth Avenue, and is constantly trying to cope with the constant womanizing at her workplace on top of the ever-present stress of numerous pressing deadlines. Consequently, she comes off as being a very anxious, self-conscious person who clearly chooses her words carefully before speaking, lest she make herself to look a fool. Her overall appearance, while perfectly fitting that stereotypical "journalist" look, is very crisp and just a little fussy.

Later on in the Rp, she supposedly attends the theatre's first performance, and is immediately consumed with how the Magician Three pull off their "tricks". In a desperate search for answers, she ambushes the three backstage and begins to interrogate them, but from the get-go is so distracted by the "Romanian's" devilishly good looks that she becomes tongue-tied. Fun times.

OOC:

1. Respect all Gaian rules and TOS, of course.
2. Respect the forum rules.
3. Treat others how you would like to be treated.
4. Take all arguments to PMs, or better yet, intelligently avoid any kind of argument whatsoever.
5. In your tryout PM(s), please include in the title, "Gumdrops".
6. No racial, religious, or any other kind of slurring.
7. If you're going to be taking a leave for an indefinite amount of time from the thread, please let me know beforehand.
8. Post often, but only within your turn. Don't spam the thread with your posts, OOC or IC.
9. If I reject your tryout PM, it's most likely for either of these reasons: A.) Your literacy is not up to par for this storyline, B.) You have not read the rules through thoroughly (and believe me, I will know), or C.) Somebody sent me something that I liked better. Don't let this discourage you, though! There are plenty of opportunities for you to obtain a character out there, just keep trying.
10. Whaddya know, I've just changed my mind. In your tryout title, include the word: "Mittens". Aren't I just the cheeky little badger.
11. Enjoy yourself. Or else.

IC:

1. Don't mix OOC knowledge with IC knowledge. In all likelihood you will know some things that your character won't yet, so don't spoil the surprise.
2. Kiddos, there is a chance that there will be some hardcore cursing/violence/romance/etc. goin' on up in here, so be forewarned before joining and/or reading. I want to protect your virgin ears for as long as they're still clean.
3. Don't powerplay/godmode. Ex: Bob took a swing at Joe, connecting with his jaw with bone-shattering impact. // A proper Ex: Bob took a swing at Joe's jaw, attempting to connect his fist with bone-shattering force. // I'm sure you can tell the difference there.
4. Rp according to the proper setting. Mercedes Benz and color T.V.'s were not invented yet. Also, pay regards to the weather. Also also, dress appropriately; no sweatshirts, tennis shoes, t-shirts, etc.
5. Post at least a 7-8 sentence paragraph, and detailed, mind you. Multiple paragraphs, if not highly encouraged, are welcomed as well. In fact, if you do this, I will love you forever.
6. For the sake of the storyline, I'm going to have to say no to killing. You can maim all you want, but you cannot kill.
7. Instead of "mittens", include "Fred Savage" in your tryout PM title.
8. If you see anything missing, kindly let me know, plzkthx. <333

From the front, the Le théâtre de Prodiges is not a very impressive building. In fact, it looks like it's been uninhabited for many a year, and in that span of time been infested with termites, mould, rot, and all other manner of nasties. A lot of the wooden framework has fallen apart from the nail, haphazardly dangling from the insulation, and mounds of trash swarms the sidewalk around it. The building itself is sandwiched tightly between two tenements smack dab in the middle of Fifth Avenue. A dark, vacant ticket box stands forlornly at the entrance, the shades lopsidedly pulled down.

Past the dusty glass revolving doors is the theatre's cavernous lobby. It's a damn shame... From looking at the room at large, one could discern that the theatre was once a very ritzy place. This idea is augmented by the crystalline chandellier hanging from the whitewashed ceiling, the ornately carved mahogany balustrades flanking the grand stairway, and the corinthian marble columns hugging the gilded dark green walls. Heavy wine-red carpet is designed to muffle the footsteps of hundreds at a time, to better preserve the eerie mystique of the place. Dozens of gas-lit lamps dot the peeling walls, their panes covered with layers of ancient dust and grime and strands of filthy cobwebs draping from the burnished metal. Two doors stand to either side of the room, the left leading to the ticketmaster's office and the right a supply closet.

Up the staircase and through the convoluted double doors opens up onto the balcony, where those of the wealthier stock observe the stage. High-backed velvet cushioned chairs form the ends of the single row of seats, whereas the middle is comprised of one ostentatious bloodred loveseat. A dark cheerywood railing closes off the balcony from the dropoff below. Narrow hallways can be accessed at either side, both leading down to separate alcoves.

The orchestra seating directly below is composed of seven rows of classic theatre chairs, burgundy in color, separated by two aisles. Per row of seats are fourteen chairs. The stage area itself is very dark and houses excellent acoustics (due to the curved architecture), so one's voice - while amplified twice in strength - can carry for a full thirty seconds before dying away completely. The color scheme is strictly a dark forest green and a deep maroon, the walls festooned with gilded gold ornamentations and a series of circular lights providing the tiniest bit of illumination to the windowless room.

Backstage are the supply rooms/north annex/dressing rooms/offices. A plethora of paraphernalia litters the plank, sawdust sprinkled floor: Coils of rope, boards of different-sized wood, half-finished costumes, chairs and benches, strips of cloth, tables, and other such rubbish.

Hmm, this looks really awesome and intriguing...

Don't think I'm quite literate enough to join though. I may just stalk the thread and pop in with comments while I read along.
