im kinda confused about this subject. Are guys required to have a certain style of hair to pass the sacrament. I've been told by some that you are supposed to model your looks after the prophet. Does this mean that if your hair is longer than the average guy's, then you are unworthy? I don't think that that would be so. I have long hair and im constantly getting hounded about it. some of my friends have even been told that they cannot pass the sacrament because their hair is too long or not their natural hair color. what is the standard here? i think that as long as you do things in moderation you should be fine but what do you guys think?

I never heard about your hair needing to be modeled after the prophet. That's a new one for me. I guess really it depends on how long the hair is and what "un-natural" color it is. Like if someone dyes their hair kool-aid red, hot pink, or green, what do you think when you see them? Are you going to think "Wow, he looks professional." or is it going to be, "Oh my gosh, what an outrageous hair style." We are told to avoid extreme appearances. Here is some quotes from talks I've found. Self Management Quote: Generally the cover or jacket of a book is designed to sell what is inside. We will not have to die to be judged by the cover of the book of life. To those who would say, “It’s what you really are inside that counts, not the length of the hair or beard,” I would say, “If this is true, and I agree it is, why run the risk of looking like something you’re not?” In working with others in regard to personal appearance, change can usually be brought about more quickly by courteously appealing to pride, impression, and image. Living ProphetQuote: ‘Tomorrow my husband will shave off his long, full beard. Because of the request of the stake president and your direction in the Priesthood Bulletin, he must not have the appearance of evil or rebellion if he is to get a recommend to go to the temple. I have wept anguished tears; the faces of Moses and Jacob were bearded, and to me the wisdom and spirituality of the old prophets reflected from the face of my own spiritual husband. It was like cutting out for me a symbol of the good things my generation has learned.’ Then the letter concluded with a challenge to me: ‘We are prepared for clear, specific, hard-line direction as youth. Wishy-washy implications are not heard very well here. We look to you to tell it straight.’ “I don’t know whether she knew just what she was asking for when she asked me to tell it straight, but these are some things I wrote to her: ‘In your letter you address me as, “Dear President Lee,” and in your first sentence you refer to me as the Lord’s prophet. Now, in your letter you tell me that you are saddened because with the shaving off of the beard and the cutting of the hair, which, to you, made your husband appear as the prophets Moses and Jacob, he would no longer bear that resemblance. I wonder if you might not be wiser to think of following the appearance of the prophets of today. President David O. McKay had no beard or long hair; neither did President Joseph Fielding Smith; and neither does your humble servant whom you have acknowledged as the Lord’s prophet. So overall, is it more important to follow the counsel of the prophet? Or have colorful hair for a few months?

You know Vin, I was just about to go in that direction. I was told that you shouldn't have hair that makes you stand out and take people's attention away from the sacrament. My bishope said that we couldn't serve the sacrament if we had individual spikes if we spiked our hair. My friend wears his hair in a ponytail because his hair is so long. I don't think that's stopping him from serving the sacrament. He's growing his hair out so that he can give it to a wig shop (or something like that). But if you are counseled by your bishop to not have long/dyed hair in order to serve the sacrament, shouldn't you follow that advice? The sacrament should be more important than your hair.

The difficulty in answering a question like this comes from forced perspective. It is difficult to tell someone what is best and have them understand it when the two sides have a different perspective. While I can easily sit here and say "it's more important to follow the counsel of your bishop" it doesn't mean it will be easy for you or your friend. I don't know your exact situation or your friend's. We all learn to pick our battles as we grow up. The younger we are, usually the more battles we want to pick. I certainly am that way. Something that a year ago I might've thought was worth fighting over, now perhaps doesn't seem as important to me. So it is in your best interests to determine "Is this a fight worth fighting over?" How difficult would it be to have your hair in a manner that would allow you to pass the sacrament? And, is passing the sacrament important enough to change your hairstyle? If it is, then keep your hair in such a way that you can pass the sacrament, but still keep your sense of identity.
More often then not, if we choose a battle that puts us on one side and our church leaders on the other, we are usually wrong. Not every time, but usually. To me, it's not really worth the risk.

I think that maybe studying about the sacrament will help. It's a very sacred and personal experience. It is part of the eternal plan. It is vital for us to return to heavenly father. While I do think having personal style is great(Dare to be different I always say), it's more important to pass the sacrament. There are a lot of ways to show off your style other than dying hair radical colors and wearing it long. (Not to mention that I find it funny when guys do that. I see it kinda feminine and vain xd ) A good question to ask yourself is, "If Christ was here, would my appearance be appropriate? Would I feel comfortable passing the sacrament the way I am?"

well the way ive always thought about it is that if its not too distracting to the people taking the sacrament it should be fine but i guess the standard changes with each bishop.

When they seem to be focused on you instead of the sacrament?

You can tell spirit wise. The bishopric can tell if it is distracting or if people are feeling the spirit.

Like if you can't see their eyes because of their hair... I don't know, I guess that's kind of steriotypical "shady character", but if I can't see their eyes I wonder if they're worthy. And I know they probably are! I'm not saying that guys with long hair aren't worthy. It's kind of hard to explain... XD And if their hair is flaming pink, yeah that's kind of distracting.

I wonder if a girl with flaming pink (or other color) just sitting there in sacrament would be distracting... Like, I think I would stare at her hair. Maybe.

cycloptys well the way ive always thought about it is that if its not too distracting to the people taking the sacrament it should be fine but i guess the standard changes with each bishop. My question How would you know if it is distracting to the people taking the Sacrament? was referring to the statement above.
