Leon waited up on the rocky mountainside as the sun began to set. It was starting to paint the fluffy clouds colors that matched his own hide, and he stared at them dreamily, admiring the shades and transforming their nebulous shapes into objects of myth and tale. Even grown up, he tended to live more in a world of his own making than in the real world.
Tonight was his special night. Every week or so, he met with his sister, and they spent time, grazing together and talking, just enjoying each other's company. Tonight was going to be beautiful. The stars would glitter clearly through the scattered puffs of cloud, and the air was finally beginning to cool significantly when the sun set, making walks at dusk lovely.
He liked to wait for her here, where the rock jutted above the treeline. She had inherited their father's wings, while he had not. It was a bit of a climb for him, but he loved to watch her fly. His eyes shone with pride as he spotted her coming across the sky that shone brilliantly behind her. He called to her with a high pitched call, rearing to paw the air in a rare show of spirit and fire. His sister always did bring out the best in him.

Just as she herself stood out against a daytime sky, so too did Leon's purple coat stand out against the dull gray of the mountains. Amary would have been able to see him even without the demonstrative greeting on Leon's part, but she'd always loved seeing it. It showed Leon's funness, and it was a side of him that he tended to kept far too pent up for his own good, if she did say so herself.
Besides, it was always nice to be noticed!
Dipping her wings to show that she'd seen him, Amary whickered out a greeting herself, then spun into a graceful backwards roll up in the air. She loved to put on a show, and Leon was always an appreciative audience. That in mind, she then proceded to flip heels over nose, then roll again, then do a few rolls in a row before finally coasting to a landing right beside Leon. "Hey baby brother! Hope you haven't been waiting long!"
Then, grinning, she was right there, snugging him tight with her wings.

Oh, how beautiful she was when she was flying! His hooves danced a beat on the rock, chiming sharp notes through the evening air. He nickered deep in his throat in welcome to his sister as she landed and was embraced by her. "I could wait until the sun sets no more if I had to, 'Mary," he replied passionately. It was possible that neither parent suspected that their son had inherited their passionate, intense ways, since he didn't typically express it in their presence. Oh, he didn't have any inappropriate feelings for his sister, to be sure. The very idea would have both embarassed and ignited a surprising fury from the young stallion. But all his feelings tended to be of the very intense, concentrated kind.
"Are you hungry?" he inquired then, after nibbling on her mane affectionately. "The deer haven't been lingering in our glade lately, so there is plenty of sweet fall grasses to be had there." He glanced down at the forest below them, which was scattered liberally with open spots where grass and flowers tended to flourish. The last of the brilliant warm colors was fading from the sky, and darkness began to cloak them. "I should probably get down from here before it gets too dark to see my footing anyway." His voice was soft, seeming somewhat timid, though it simply was his way. He wasn't actually afraid of tripping. Not when his sister was there. Somehow she made everything right in his world, so that even the most embarassing situations were smoothed and made less painful.

"Charmer." Grinning, Amary stepped back from her brother, ruffling his shaggy mane as she did so. He was looking well today, not the least bit scruffy or disreputable...but then again, he always looked nice around her. And in general, she'd think; one thing that their family was very particular about was grooming. Among other things.
"Well, I'm glad you didn't have to wait THAT long, Leon; besides, I'd feel bad, leaving you on a mountain all alone for that long. I'm a big girl, and I'd be able to find you wherever."
Amary herself wasn't totally sold on this mountain meeting, even though they'd been reuniting here for a while. It just seemed like such a lot of work for Leon, clambering up the mountain only to turn and go back down again...but he insisted. He was a stubborn one, her brother. So why argue?
Because it was fun, of course. "Food sounds great, Leon, even if it IS just a crafy cover to have an excuse to head down the mountain. As though you can't just come out and be honest with me!" Winking, Amary suddenly scarpered ahead down the path, her little hooves dainty as a goat's. "Light hooves make fast trips, Le!"

Leon watched his graceful sister descend ahead of him. She embodied all that was good and wonderful in the world. To his eyes, at least. Any future mate would have a very high standard to meet, to be sure. But something sad and quiet within him kept telling him there was no mate out there for him. That he was fated to be alone. As always, he turned his mind from that dark, lonely corner of his mind and focused on the joy that was his sibling.
He liked her perky attitude, her swinging, curly hair, and her care-free atttitude. Oddly enough, despite his dwelling in dreams most of the time, he knew instinctively that he was more realistic and more... well, perhaps the word was mature? The whole idea confussed him faintly, but it was an unspoken truth nonetheless. So he cherished her childish ways, like now as she danced ahead of him, daring him to catch her.
Instead, he made his more sedate way down. He wasn't as lithe and lightly built as his sister. Perhaps it was her wings that made the difference. But he was more solidly built, with larger hooves and wither shoulders. He followed her down carefully, heavy hooves sinking into the soft loam on the steep pathway.
It wasn't long before they were safely and contentedly grazing in their favorite meadow. The night sky was drawing over them, and the stars were beginning to shine. Amidst the rip-chomp sounds, he flicked an ear. "So who is your latest beau, 'Mary? Tell me about him." He loved to hear her talk about her adventures in romance. Having none himself, he lived vicariously through her. "Does this one make you laugh?"

Upon reaching the meadow, Amary had set to grazing with her usual energy, biting, chewing, and swallowing as though she were expecting the grass to literally run away. In truth, though, she simply wanted to get the dull business of eating out of the way so that she could focus all of her attention on Leon and the conversation. It was rude to talk and eat at the same time, after all.
So upon hearing Leon's question, she finished the mouthful she was on and looked up with a grin. "Leon, you are always so very formal, it makes me laugh!" Beau indeed; the word 'beau' implied a permanancy the far exceded anything she'd experienced thus far, though that didn't mean she liked hearing the term. It made her life sound much more fancy than it actually was, in her opinion, and that, in turn, made her stories seem that more exciting when being told. Not that Leon would complain even if she WAS boring...or would he?
Nah.
Grinning, she looked over at Leon, her eyes dancing with impish pleasure at being able to talk about one of her favorite pastimes with one of her favorite Soquilis. "Do you really think I could spend that much time with a stallion if he didn't, Leon? But yeah..."
Tossing back her curls, she strolled over to her brother, her head tilted up in a daydreamy fashion as she began filling him in on her most recent exploits. "Actually, I've met a few guys since we last talked, Leon. This one guy? I called him Ciqqy." Giggling, she thought of the tall, muscular stallion, his sly smile playing before her eyes and making her sigh happily. "He was SOOOO gorgeous, I tell you; tall, with beautiful dark stripes and a curly mane...I tell you, Leon, curls are to DIE for when you're being nuzzled and whatnot, because they tickle. And he was so much fun...great sense of adventure. And he had a great smile, and was actually fun to talk to!"
Yes, he was a stallion she approved of, alright. "And I think I told you about Siggy before; he's the quiet one? We went swimming together, but that's it so far. He's a hard nut to crack, but I'm hopeful that maybe next time we meet he'll be up for some REAL fun." She was hoping that that would be true; after all, he was a very interesting stallion, silence or not, and handsome to boot. "I think he'd be amenable, if given the right prodding. And then there's Zevach, I met him last night at the beach..."

He listened quietly as she babbled on, occasionally taking another bite of the sweet evening grass. Idly he wondered if what his sister looked for in stallions was what other mares their age looked for. He certainly wasn't handsome, like the boys she met were. And he wasn't very interesting to talk to. Oh, he listened, but his end of the conversation didn't often consist of much. What did he have to tell about, after all? Aside from his fantastical musings, that was. If he found a mare who loved stories and myths and fairytales, that'd be the one for him, to be sure. But... how likely was that?
As to a great sense of adventure? Just getting up the mountain was an adventure for him. No, he was too much a homebody to be very intriguing and thrilling. Though his mane did have a curl to it. He paused to examine it with one eye, head turned sharply to the side. And he did have flowers in his mane. That counted for something when it came to females, didn't it? His father seemed to think so.
With a heavy sigh he straightened his neck again and snatched another mouthful of grass, tuning back into what she was saying. He really should stop trying to compare himself to these stallions of hers. It was a bit too depressing.

Oblivious to any issues that were going through her brother's mind, Amary continued to babble on, telling her brother about this stallion's habits and that stallion's preferences and how this tryst went and that rendesvous, pleased to be able to talk about her experiences with someone who was really interested and objective.
Or at least, that was the theory, right up until Leon sighed. Breaking off at that, Amary prompty moved right up to Leon and gave him a headbutt to the shoulder, her usual direct approach taking precedence over any potential diffidence. "Alrighty Leon, I heard that. Spill, you, what's on your mind?"
Just because Leon preferred to listen than talk didn't mean that the tables couldn't be turned once in a while. "And you'd better talk, otherwise I'll weasel it out of you." And she wouldn't stop until she was successful, as he ought to know!

Fondly he whickered a chuckle at her forward manner and demand to know what was on his mind. He never tried to keep any secrets from her. He knew what she'd be like if he had tried... unbearable! So rather than strive fruitlessly to keep anything from her, he always shared them willingly. Even if they were rather... embarassing. Like now.
"Well, I was just wondering how I'll ever manage to find myself a mare when I am not really any of the things you love about your stallions." He cast her a rueful smile. "I may live in a fantasy world most of the time, but I have no illusions about my status in the real world." He blew softly through his nostrils in a gentle whuffle, then planted a kiss on his sister's jaw. "I'm so glad you find such joy in those of my gender, but I really don't see how any mare will ever find such joy in me. I'm just too plain and... and....," and right about then, words failed him. Which didn't happen very often. "I am simply not the type to attract a mare," he finished in an almost dignified manner.
Another sigh escaped him then. "But acknowleding that doesn't mean it doesn't make me wish it wasn't so." Leon wasn't exactly wallowing in self-pity. He merely was wistful for what he clearly wasn't. Always the knowledge had weighed on his mind that he was so very not like their father, who seemed to be almost every mare's idea of handsome and charming.

There was one thing that Amary had always hated about her brother, and that was his almost constant state of self-deprication. He might think that he was philosophical or whatever about it, but all Amary ever saw was a wonderful stallion who was way too hard on himself. Why he persisted in those beliefs, she had no idea; after all, from a critical perspective he was a very handsome fellow, and SUCH a sweetie!
"You are so silly sometimes, did you know that, Leon? You ought to know by now that the most important thing of all to me is physical studliness, and regardless of what you happen to think, you're a stud. I mean, you have curls for pete's sake!" Whuffing a bit, Amary leaned over to nuzzle her brother's mane, then stayed standing like that, her head leaning against his neck lovingly. "Plus, you're a beautiful and unique color, and while you're not the most burly of stallions there's a certain regality to your build. I'm telling you, if you'd actually TRY to go out and meet some mares..."
But that was an old wheeze, and she knew it. Leon just wasn't comfortable going out and being social, and she knew that she was only repeating herself needlessly. "Seriously, Leon. From the entirely seperate perspective of a mare who knows her way around stallions, you're a stud! And you really SHOULD try and take advantage of that sometime, sex is so enjoyable! I'm telling you, you're denying yourself one of life's greatest positives." From her perspective, at least, but it was the one she knew best! "Your problem is that you are too isolated."

He still managed to blush when she tried to dicuss his own intimate relationships (or lack thereof) with him. He knew he was an embarassment to the family, so to speak, in this matter. His distinct lack of social graces and genteel manners set him apart, much less his general hesitancy when it came to romantic interludes. He tucked his chin self-conciously and closed his eyes. What good was it if she thought of him as a stud if noone else did? And he could hardly argue with her about being too isolated. He really was, since he never left the general vicinity he thought of as 'home', close to their mother.
"You are right, of course. But I don't see how anything is likely to change, unless I suddenly sprout wings and an ego." He flashed an amused glance at her then, as it was a gentle prod at her, a teasing at their differences. "I'm sorry 'Mary. I do wish I could be more like you, more comfortable with others." He heaved another sigh. "But I'm not, and I really don't know how to change that."

Laughing, Amary gave Leon another headbutt, her voice playful as she responded "Sprout wings and an ego and you'd be Papa, Leon; I like you as Leon, thanks much. And you don't need wings to go places, you know? Look at Mom; she doesn't have wings, but she's been all over the place AND been able to meet her own fair share of stallions."
Even if this was a lost cause, that didn't mean that Amary couldn't try to argue for it anyway. "But maybe you could just take baby steps. Explore the area a bit more, see if you meet any mares you'd like to be intimate with, and use your great smile to your advantage!" No sane mare would be able to resist him if he tried, after all!

Leon was stuck in the typical oxymornoic situation that all shy folk are. They really want to be broken out of their pattern of reclusiveness, but at the same time fear doing so. He eyed his sister sideways, ears canted in a disbelieving manner. "I could see myself wandering a bit, sis, but then what would I do if I did meet someone?" He snorted. "I can talk to you, but you know me already."
He shifted his hooves uneasily. "I'm hardly the dashing sort with words to entice a mare near. And even if you are to be believed that I could attract a mare with simply my looks, how exactly do you suggest I proceed?" The stallion swung his head to forestall her. "No, I don't need a play by play instruction. I've heard enough from you to know what stallions do." He rolled his eyes faintly and gave her a smile. "My trouble is... well...," he shuffled his hooves again. "I get all tongue-tied and stupid around mares." This was mumbled rather shamefacedly. "What do I have to talk about, after all?" He raised his head a bit to throw her an accusatory glance. she knew he was awful at conversation. "I'm just not Dad!" His eyes widened as he realized that actually came out, rather than stayed locked inside. Perhaps there was something he'd kept from her after all... his painful envy of his father's easy manner with mares, among other qualities.

Sighing herself, Amary leaned reassuringly against her brother's side as though her very presence could will away his unease. Leon's lack of confidence in social situations wasn't new to her, but it WAS always very confusing. After all, she didn't consciously think about her own level of confidence, she just went forth and acted! But things that she took for granted were so very hard on her brother...
"No, you're not Dad; if you WERE, things would be even stranger than they might be otherwise. Papa os Papa, but YOU are Leon and I like you that way." But it was time to let this uneasy topic move along, thanks muchly.
"So, have you seen Mom lately? She wasn't around the clearing the last time I was looking."

Very happy to let the subject drop, Leon seized on this new topic. "Mother has been getting more restless lately." He leaned against his sister companionably, nibbling on whatever part of her was most convenient. "I think our growing up has eased her complete contentment a bit. Though I know she worries for me and my aloneness." Bah, there it was again. Always back to the same subject tonight! Why was that?
"I think she's been roaming around, though," he hurried on. "She mentioned a blue stallion, I think? Or was it black?" He snorted a laugh, shaking his curls back. "I never can keep track between you and her and your loves." He used the term loosely, when it came to his family. Even though their idea of love was a fleeting enjoyment, deep in his heart he felt sure his own love would remain, something like what mother and father shared, but stronger, more dedicated and exclusive. He was meant for love eternal.
"I'm glad she's been out having fun, though. She deserves it." Their mother had been a fantastic mother, watching over them every step of the way and nurturing their good natures. He felt she completely deserved her own life, free from him and his sister. They were fully raised and able to care for themselves. It was time for her to move on. "Perhaps she won't come home this time." He couldn't help the faint, wistful note that crept into his voice. Admittedly, he was a momma's boy, and enjoyed the safety of having his mother nearby to tend to anything that might need a mare's touch.
Thoughtful, he mused on that strain of thought. Maybe, just maybe, if she did leave him to his own devices, he'd be forced to endure the painful awkwardness he hated in order to find a mare to look after him willingly. Was this the nudge he needed?
