I thought I would post in here cause really I am not having a good college experience this year. I'm very discourage. I guess it doesn't help that my best friend passed away a week before college started.
But I've noticed that I'm facing many trials that actually try my standards. Which is interesting, really. razz
So in my math class, everyone failed the first test, including me, I stink at math. It didn't bug me at first because I thought it was just me. I thought the teacher was nice, but she made a comment that was kinda mean. We were reviewing 3 different ways to graph a line (Addition, Substitution, and graphing method). So she says, "This is all review for you. Then again, I thought chapters one and two were suppose to be review." (Our first test was on one and two)
So I don't have any support from the teacher apparently. What would you do if you were in my spot? Dropping the class is out of question because I can't get my money back, and it is an expensive class. (okay so that one didn't have to deal with standards.)

Now for problem number 2 in college. razz
Okay so my teacher gives out assignments each week. I have to read a short story. But, the stories he assigns has drug, sex, and other immoral references.
Me, when I saw those things, I Just stopped reading the story. We don't have to write an essay on it nor does he test on it.
So what would you do?

And problems go on like that.... I'm so sick of college right now. -_-

I feel for you Vin. I can't really say I know what it's like because I've been trying to get into collage for three years now.

For the math problem, I'd just say to try and make the best of a bad situation. I wouldn't drop that class because classes DO cost a lot of money. Try and find someone to study with. Everything is easier to do with a friend.

For the english problem, if he doesn't test you on it or make you write an essay on it then why do you have to read it? If it were me and I absolutely had to read the book I'd go to the teacher and tell him/her that I'd rather not read something derogetory(sp?) and if it would be okay if I could read something else without drugs, sex, and other immoral references. If worse comes to worse you could always do a petition against it.

Anyways, I hoped that helped. You don't have to listen to a word of what I said because I really have no clue what I'm talking about (since I'm still trying to get into collage). I guess the most obvious answer is pray about it.

Wow, that really stinks Vin. It's not cool when you have instructors who seem to enjoy putting others down. That statement about chapters 1 and 2 was really uncalled for. It's unfortunate when some who are in authority need to put others down to feel good about themselves. It would be like you teaching a primary class and laughing at the kids cuz they don't have all their scriptures memorized. You wouldn't do that. Don't drop the math class because, like you said, you'll lose the money and also you're not guaranteed of getting a better teacher next time.

Artemis gave alot of good suggestions. Do you mind me asking what book it is that you are supposed to read? And if you won't be tested on it, why do you have to read it? If it turns out that you will be tested, you can always ask for a different book. You can talk to the professor and tell him your feelings. One other thing you can do is just skip the parts that are objectionable to you. If it turns out the whole book is questionable, than it probably would be better if you found a way to change it.

It's too bad you aren't having a good semester. College is supposed to be a fun experience. It is also a period of great change. You change the most as a person between the ages of 18 to 25. Because of all this change, this is also a great time for Satan to work on you. You are a strong person and you will make it through this tough period! smile Even though you might be struggling with your classes, try to remember all the areas that are good in your life. This will be an easy time to get discouraged, but remember that so many people like you and care for you. That is really sad about your friend. I remember you asking us what music we listen to when we are down. I feel real bad that you lost a good friend. There is no way to express it adequately, but know that I really do care about you and it's sad that you had to go through such a difficult trial.

Artemis>>> I may not know why you can;t get into a college, but Have you tried a community college? It's a great place to start off. Plus you can build up your GPA to get into a university. It's also cheap so you can save some money for a mission. At least, it's what I am doing. I'm planning on going to a university after my mission.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. As for the book. I can't remember the name and I'm too lazy to go find it. blaugh It's a compilation of short stories. It's a college text book. Not a very good one at that. They had a short story in there that changed from past tense to present tense. o_O

snaksie>>> Yeah college is usually fun for me. I've been in college for over a year now. Generally I have classes I can't wait to get to. But this semester is different. I do enjoy my psychology class, but since it is psychology, my professor tends to talk about death, and effects of depression...... it's not a real pick me up class. It is very good. razz It just makes me not want to be a psychologist.
The good areas in my life is my one and only best friend, my family, and seminary (I'm on my 5th year. My lil bro just started Seminary :p). Right now I don't really have a lot going on. I do try to work on my novel, but I haven't touched it much since my friend passed away. I am planning on volunteering at a school to help children who are special needs or just struggling. I know sooner or later, I will be better. I just gotta involve myself in things that I enjoy.

Heh heh... a junior collage is what I'm trying to apply for. But it's a trial. Like all things. Somehow or another it will make me stronger. I think I may already know why.

I think a Junior College is a great idea. Especially in California, where the JC's are so inexpensive. Like Vin said, you can save money and raise your GPA. Also. if you transfer to a 4-year, if you already have your AA degree, you won't have to take as many general ed classes as if you came without the AA. Good luck getting in Artemis and good luck getting through Vin!

Is that what you guys call them? We just call them, community colleges. I guess it might be different where I live. They accept anyone. Even those who can't read well (They have courses set up for them) Of course, by the last withdraw date, half the people quit. ^^;
In my state is it better to go to a community college. We get special benefits when we go to a in-state 4-year university.

eek Oh my gosh guys. I think I could cry right now (and I almost did).
I was having a hard time with english because the group I was in, only one person reviewed my essay (2 more were suppose to do that) and I ended up with an 88 (Not bad but I would like A's). So I e-mailed my teacher and asked him what I could do to improve myself. He is letting me rewrite the essay. T__T Oh my gosh. I have a teacher who does care how well I do. I've been feeling like I hardly had any teachers that care. I'm so blessed.

Oh, and I found out why we read the short stories. We have to write a response to a short story of choice.

Yeah, community colleges are called Junior Colleges (JC's) in California. I think they are a great way to go.

That's cool that you have a teacher who actually cares. It makes a difference.

It looks like maybe you can choose a different book to read. That's good. I hope everything works out for you this semester! smile

Ah forget it, my teacher stop responding to me. Oh well... I should just visit him during office hours.

It always makes a difference when somebody cares.

It really does. It makes me feel good when people check up on me. Sadly, most of my friends seem to think that not talking about my friend or checking up on me is a good thing.

that is a bit unfortunate. i hope things start working out better for you, things can get pretty hard at college. do you mind if i ask where your goiing? i went to byu-i for two semesters before i headed home for the summer, and in about a month and a half i hit up my mission. but i had lots of stressors at byu too, so at least you can take comfort in knowing that we all have hard times sometimes. if that helps, hahaha rofl probably not....but as for your readings, i think telling your instructor about your religious values and standards may go a very long ways. i can't guarantee that it will change much, as many instructors have a set curriculum that they don't like to change (try and remember also with your rude math teacher, that the job is stressful on them as well, and that they're human too---so cut them a little slack and try not to take it too personally), so you may not get different reading material. but you might, and thats where a little prayer and a lot of faith (maybe a lot of both, if you need it) can go along ways. good luck, i hope things work out and rememebr---things are never as bad as they can seem, and it can always be worse---so be grateful it isn't.

i really do hope you start feeling ebtter though, and i know and understand that losing a friend can be very difficult. i won't lie and say that i know exactly what your going through, because its a little different for everyone, but i know it was hard for me so hang on, and remember that they wouldn't want you to be so sad. remember the good times, remember the bad, remember it all. and remember what was and what is to come. ah, you know all of this i'm sure...i just like to talk redface sorry...hehe but feel better okay? life only gets better!

A lot of colleges have tutoring programs on campus, and if you're at a state-funded campus, some of it is free. See if you can find a math lab or talk with your professor about programs that bring you up to speed. Unfortunately, there is a big bias in college against undergrads. The colleges need them -- they pay the bills. But, so many are coming in with a sense of entitlement (I breathed in your class -- where my A?) that teaching undergraduate classes is by far the low end of the scale in college circles. You may have been on the receiving end of some of that bias.

Set up an appointment and talk with the English professor about your standards. It sounds like the written response is the target, so alternate stories would probably do the trick.

You may also want to see if the psychology department has a counseling program that is for supervised graduate students. Probably not the best care and you'll have to be firm about your standards (I had some interesting experiences on the receiving end in my time), but it might be an affordable way to help you move through the grief.

Also, remember that you have sources of help that are beyond this world! wink Hang in there, pray, get to church, study scriptures, and surround yourself with uplifting music as you struggle through all of this. You'll get the help you need to make it.
