Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Although that was not technically true at the moment, it was still a lovely song.

It was raining.

Imperial was cold.

He really didn’t know why he was in the rain. It had been raining when he’d started out on this walk, so he didn’t have the excuse of being taken by surprise. Perhaps because walks were enjoyable things no matter the weather? Or perhaps he’d needed to clear his head. Yes, that must have been it.

Imperial didn’t clear his head the way one usually cleared one’s head. Taking a walk to clear your head was not a novel idea, it was simply the way he cleared his head that made it… odd? No, out-of-the-ordinary. Most people cleared their heads be doing something that rid their minds of unpleasant or unwanted thoughts, for a period of time at least. Imperial’s head-clearing consisted of clearing out the unpleasant thoughts, but it also included clearing out pleasant ones. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to think the pleasant thoughts… not at all! But oftentimes, when his head was populated by unpleasant thoughts, no matter how few, the pleasant ones tended to get jumbled and unorganized, and when Imperial’s pleasant thoughts were darting around like mad, they tended to lose most of their meaning. So when he walked, it allowed him only to concentrate on pleasant thoughts.

His pleasant thoughts usually centered around the same subject.

And they had been doing that since… how long had it been? He wasn’t really sure. Time didn’t seem to go by its usual standards anymore, but that didn’t really matter.

They had been doing that since the day his world had suddenly gotten so much brighter… since the day the sun had come again.

Sun, sun, sun… he thought idly. Those words were lyrics, lyrics from a song he’d listened to on his record player. True, he was sloshing through the rain at the moment, but did the music care? No. And neither did love.

And these two things, music and love, warmed Imperial in the rain.

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day...

Melcocha sat comfortably under the tree, looking out at the rain-soaked world around her.

She'd started her walk much earlier than the rain had, to get away from the chaos and occasionally explosive loudness of her home. Well.. 'walk' would not be the best term to describe it. More like... escape, under the guise of a walk. A wandering around, if you will, until she decided that home would be quiet enough for her to return. It had been almost a half an hour into her escape when it had begun raining..

Not that Melcocha minded the rain. It was... cleansing. It felt good, to let the rain soak her through and wash through her fur. It felt better, when she pretended that it was her stress and troubles, and not the rain, rolling across her back and into the ground.

So here she sat, under a tree that did not quite shield her from the rain but shielded her from the most violent of it, which was how she liked it, gazing at nothing, and thinking of nothing.

Really, it was the best way to spend a rainy walk. Thinking of nothing in particular, letting the water and the stress drip from her fur.. And the occasional flash of peacock blue and green interrupting her nothing-thoughts made it all the more enjoyable, turning her normally stoic expression into a fond, gentle smile.

In the short distance, a familiar figure appeared, gradually growing as it loomed closer. If Melcocha had been thinking of anything in particular instead of nothing and only flashes of something, she would have noticed it, and her fond smile would have grown.

However, she was not, and so she did not, and so it did not. And she simply continued as she was.

Rain, rain...

Imperial frowned. Today his unpleasant thoughts were much worse than his usual ones, and by far had been taking up more time during his walk then the pleasant ones. This was rather troubling, as these particular unpleasant thoughts were ones he had not really worried about for quite some time.

As he paced through the rain, he sighed.

Today’s unpleasant thoughts orbited around what his life had been like before he’d left and gone to the shop… his “past”, for lack of a better word.

It was not his “past” that was troubling him at the moment – it had troubled him quite enough before. No, what was giving him so much stress today was the thought of telling her, Melcocha, about it. He knew he would have to someday, that was inevitable. And yet… and yet, he wasn’t ready. He had had difficulties coming to terms with it himself. He wasn’t sure he could share it with anyone else just yet… even if it was her, the one he was in love with.

Even though he was thinking about her (in a somewhat indirect way, but a way nonetheless), he didn’t notice her small figure, growing larger as he grew nearer to it. Had he not noticed it merely because she was sitting inconspicuously under a tree? Or, perhaps, because at this moment his mind connected her with his troubles, when she herself, in physical form right in front of his eyes, was possibly the most wonderful and untroubling thing in his life… and his mind simply did not at this moment want to connect the Melcocha from his troubling thoughts and the flesh-and-blood Melcocha a mere few yards away from him?

Whatever it had been, it took until they were mere feet away from each other to realize she was there. Imperial saw something out of the corner of his eye, somebody familiar… He turned his head slowly, by now not even needing to look at her to know who it was. A gentle smile spread on his face, at the same time a faint blush darted across his cheeks, embarrassed for not seeing her the moment she’d entered his vision. The blush left as quickly as it came, and he padded over to her under the tree.

Imperial nodded his head in a small bow, an unnecessary formality that by now had all but become a reflex. “Hallo,” he said as the rain rolled down their backs.

A blink, startled, and a glance upwards towards the voice that had interrupted her nothing-thoughts, and a small spreading of the smile that already graced her mouth.

"Imperial."

She said it by way of greeting, quietly, nodding her own small sort of bow back at him. It was more habit than anything, honestly. After seeing Imperial bowing so much in hellos, it had quite naturally become an unconscious habit of her own. She didn't mind it, and not minding it was hardly enough reason to try and stop, so she made no effort to. Even if Beelzien had formed the annoying habit of calling her 'Ladyship' for such an 'overly formal' greeting, at least in his eyes.

"What are you doing out here, in the rain?"

Never mind that she was doing the same thing.

“Melcocha,” he responded, his smile spreading a little in response to hers.

Her presence did nothing but complicate what he’d already been thinking, but no matter. Being with her took priority over anything he might have been doing before, no matter what it had been. And besides… perhaps seeing her and talking with her with those matters in the back of his mind might help him straighten them out.

“Oh… I was talking a walk. Clearing my head, that sort of thing…” he trailed off.

“And you?” he asked, an anxious frown momentarily creasing his forehead. “I’m worried… I hope you don’t catch some illness…” Imperial looked out at the pouring rain, and then back at her. He held few regards for his own safety in comparison with those he held for hers… although that might have made him sound hypocritical.

Melcocha laughed lightly. "I will be fine. As soon as I return home, I'm sure that at least one of the others will tell Jestari that I am wet, and then she will smother me with towels until I am dry and not let me back outside until it's stopped raining. In any case, I should be asking you the same thing. You're much more exposed to the rain than I am." She flitted her gaze over his body then, as if to check for some sign of illness, but finding none, reoriented back on his face.

Her smile dimmed for a moment, but returned quickly... if strained. "I am... taking a break from my 'family.' It gets crowded in our small home. And noisy." She gave a small shrug of her shoulders. She didn't pry as to what he was clearing his head of. Both cats were very private, and Melcocha knew it very well.

“Glad to hear it,” Imperial said, and then chuckled. “Well… I suppose that’s so. But if I can manage to get a towel unnoticed, I shall probably be able to dry myself off without difficulty.” He gave a small shrug. That plan was flawed at best, but he’d rather at least make an attempt than be assaulted with towels.

He looked at her, a bit sympathetically. Both of the two had difficulty living with their housemates, but Melcocha had more of them… and a smaller house than he did. “Well, you know my house is always open to you, should you choose to come by,” he said, a light layer of sarcasm under the polite words. He knew very well that his house most likely would not be much better then hers in terms of the others living with him… but of course, he would have no qualms should she choose to visit him. There was no law that said they could not take a walk together, or not stay in the house at the very least.
