Hi folks, here's a thought for discussion: what is your favourite period of history between, say, the Classical (Greek and Roman) period and the Cavalier era (1650-ish)? That covers good, measure-able early history up to the end of the Renaissance/beginning of Baroque...
I have several eras within this period that I am fond of, myself: the Wars of the Roses in the late Medieval era; the High Medieval period of the Greater Plantagenets (call it the Henry III/Black Prince era for easy reference) and the Tudor era (a fascination that WAY pre-dates that bizarre series Showtime did this year on cable...). Why? Well, first of all, I love military and political history. Secondly, I am very fond of costuming; I make a lot of clothing from these eras, and wear it at gatherings of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a world-wide organization of Medieval and Renaissance enthusiasts and historians who like a hands-on approach. And thirdly, these eras are chock-full of fascinating people of both genders who pushed envelopes, broke glass ceilings, and put their mark on their generation.
Anyone else? What floats your historic boat? smile

I would have to say the medieval to renaissance times, especially the renaissance. My interests lie very specifically with the times between the 1400s to the 1700s (and the 1800s as well). Actually, I am finding it very difficult to be specific. I love the medieval and renaissance times, but on a 100% ratio, I'd say 65-70% renaissance and 30-35% medieval. It really is tough for me to say exactly, but I am interested in history before the 20th century as a whole, very significantly with tall ships and medieval architecture.

And yet nobody seems to be taking interest in one of my biggest passions of those times. The tall ships. I have a thread about them in general, and a thread about Britain's greatest flagship that belonged to Britain's greatest Admiral. I'm rather upset about that. cry

I haven't been able to post as much over the last couple days because of work constraints. Sorry about that! Will catch up early next week.

Other than having to design the ships for the Atlantean Elves, and working with a few Galleons in my current piece I haven't worked around ships enough to justify writing much about them. They're cool and all, but it's a pain in the a** to find any trustworthy blueprints of ships that I could work with. If you have any good links send them my way, Please.

I'm a fan of the Medieval era all the way. I even have a book I'm writing where the first half takes place during this time.

With the medieval times it's the architecture and housing that really makes me feel at home. Take a look at the cathedrals thread for examples. I love the medieval era, but it's generally more the renaissance/middle ages for me.

I 'm quite fond the the Pax Mongolia and Timurlame. Those being my long standing pets. Oh! And the Ottomans! Mustn't forget them. My latest love, though, has been the Bactrian and Kushan Empires. The beautiful mixing of cultures, it is most brilliant! And the romance of the overland trade route! The glories of the Silk Road! Such love, such love!
... Oh, and yeah, there of course is the love of the Byzantium, too, in there... but that goes along with the general region of interest, I would say...
