Avery sat at his desk, swinging his legs under the chair in his usual excess of energy. He'd finished his chores in record time, including his homework, and now he had almost a whole day to do whatever he wanted.
Usually, this was a good thing. Today, however... it just meant he was bored. He fiddled with some things on his desk, almost knocking a stack of papers over, and as he caught it, a picture slid out and landed on the ground.
It was an oldish picture, and though he didn't remember when it was taken, he knew the people in it. He picked it up and for a rare moment, was still.
Colette... and Spiro... I wonder how they're doing? he thought, and felt a little guilty. They were his best friends, and he didn't even know what was going on with them the last several months.
Ever since he'd moved out here with his family, into the boonies, it was so hard to get back into town... he'd even had to switch schools. The house was bigger, sure, and he got his own room, but he missed his friends.
He grimaced, and chewed on a dirty fingernail for a moment, trying to remember their phone numbers. The decision to call them had been made with his usual impulsiveness; no thought was given to if they even wanted him to call anymore, after being abandoned for so long. He was sure they did, and so he would.
He scribbled a couple numbers down, and frowned at them. "Are these even right? Gah! Well, I guess the worst that can happen is a wrong number. Okay!" he said, and ran into the hallway to grab the phone. Rime refused to get the kids cell phones until they were at least old enough to drive, and wouldn't discuss the matter further.
Taking it back into his room, he dialed the first number on the list, that of the shy, reserved boy he'd always tried to pull out of his shell. It was the bigger risk of the two. He was sure Colette would be happy to hear from him, and if Spiro was angry, well... Avery thought he could use a pick me up.
The ring sounded, and Avery waited impatiently, his foot taking up a tapping rhythm on the baseboard of his bed.

Spiro paced the hallway silently, expression placid and his head bowed, hair all askew in his face. The darkness that seemed to fill this household now that Freize was gone often lured the boy from his room, and inspired his quiet explorations... Or in this case, uncertain pacing. His hands continually tucked and untucked themselves in his pockets, his actions lost to him due to the pensive quality of his thoughts. He had lost himself within them when the phone rang, and the boy's head jerked up. He stared at it with slight uncertainty, and then took a good look around. It didn't seem like anyone else was answering.. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, shuffling towards the phone reluctantly.
He had become even more quiet since the disappearance of his guardian, and thus he avoided almost all social contact as if it were a disease. This time, however, it seemed as if it could not be avoided. His fingers enclosed around the phone, and he released a quiet sigh before lifting it to his ear.
"Hello?" His voice had a natural rasp now, spawning from the fact he very rarely would use it, and when he did he used it sparingly. It also was strangely deep for someone his age, matured. He shifted the phone so that he could hold it to his ear with his shoulder and used his now-free hands to poke idly at a large scab that was forming on his elbow.
(Sorry for the short post, kinda brain dead this morning.)

(( no prob ))
Avery paused for a split second, almost not sure if he recognized the voice. It had changed some... but he took the initiative, and with a grin on his face that easily transferred to his voice, he said, "Spiro! That's you, right? Guess who?"
However, before the other could even venture a guess, he continued, "It's me, Avery! So, I was thinking 'bout you guys, you and Colette, and I know I'm a jerk, 'cause I haven't called or nothin', but I thought I'd try and make it up to you by calling now."
"So... uh... here I am," he finished lamely, with a small snort of laughter at himself, and waited for the other's response.
