What do you think about drinking soda with caffeine?

When I first joined the church, I was told that it is wrong to drink any soda with caffeine. (actually, I was also told that any "dark" soda was bad) So I didn't drink any soda with caffeine for awhile. I later found out that lots of members drink soda with caffeine. One of my bishops did and he told me that it is up to each individual. I started drinking diet soda a little after that. What is upsetting is that it seems like the only diet soda that most resteraunts carry is diet Coke. No one ever has diet Sprite.

I try very hard to not drink caffeinated sodas, but sometime I do. Actually, I don't think any sodas are very good for you, so I don't drink as much as I used to. My favorite soda is Diet Caffeine-Free Dr. Pepper. Albertson's carries that, but alot of stores don't.

So, I prefer to not drink caffeinated sodas, but I feel like if I do, it's not a sin. However, it doesn't mean it's good for me either.

What do you all think?

My favorite soda is rootbeer! I think it's better that you don't drink caffeinated sodas but if you do, you're not a bad person. I really like sunkist and found out it has caffeine. I don't drink it as much as I used to but I still do sometimes. My sister however says she'll never drink caffeine, and likes to tell me i'm "such a bad person" if I do and I do not appreciate it very much. wink

I don't drink caffinated soda either. One time at the beach I drank a bunch of Sunkist but that was because it was the only drink available and another time going home (again from the beach) I drank some Mountain Dew because I had a low blood sugar (I'm diabetic). I don't drink caffinated soda because I've seen how addicted a person can become from caffine. One of my leaders when I was in the Aaronic Priesthood had with drawls. I also have a friend who drinks several energy drinks a day. That scares me.

i drink a lot of caffeinated drinks and they dont really affect me at all. if theres other drinks around that aren't caffeinated ill drink those. i dont like the drinks for the caffeine because it really doesnt affect me. i like the drinks for their taste. some of my favorite drinks are energy drinks like monster and bawls. i guess it all depends on if you become addicted to them. i could give up caffeine if i wanted to but its really not that big of a deal. if it was ever put in the word of wisdom not to drink caffeine i would stop quickly but seeing as its not hurting me or anyone else and im not dependent on it ill just be content with drinking my dr. pepper.

I don't drink caffeinated drinks unless it was by mistake (Which has happen). The reason why people say it is bad is because we have been counseled to stay away from addicting substances. Caffeine is an addicting substance. Most people don't realize they are addicted until they try to get off of it. It also harms the body. It can cause leg cramps, heart problems, headaches, and so on and so on.
I relate it to smoking and drinking coffee. Yeah if you do them it doesn't make you a bad person, but it is addicting and it harms the body.

Although I never had a problem with drinking caffeinated drinks. I happen to get diet caffeine free coke here and it is usually in all the stores. But I prefer sprite over everything. whee It's so good.

I like Sprite alot too. I like it more since I joined the church because I drink it more now. I don't feel I'm a bad person if I drink a caffeinated drink, but I still try to avoid them if possible. I like Dr. Pepper alot and I wish you could get caffeine-free DP at resteraunts.

I've never had a power drink. I don't like the idea of all that stuff in there getting doubled or tripled. I had a Jolt cola once and it made me sick. I don't think those types of drinks are for me. It sure helps to read all of your opinions. I'm still learning alot and that is one of the reasons I love the Sunday School room. I get to hear how others in the church think and it helps me decide on what is right or wrong for me. Thanks for the posts and please keep it up! biggrin

I don't see how people can drink energy drinks or sodas with extra caffeine. It's not healthy, that's for sure. o_o

I'm no hippie but I like the all natural stuff. And I'm not talking about weed! I don't like energy drinks because it's a false energy. It's more like a sugar rush. You get a high and then go low and then you think you need another drink because you don't have any energy. I'm 20 years old! If I don't have any energy it's because of my bad sleeping habits! I'm young enough to go off of my own reserves. Everytime I see my friend drinking an energy drink I imagine a five year old drinking coffee. It's not right.

I know this is off subject but energy drinks also remind me of anti-depressants. The doctors tried putting me on them once (I don't know why...) and I hated the feeling. I was happy for a while. I couldn't stop smiling. Then the effects of the drug wore off and my face hurt. I vowed never to take another anti-depressant again because I want to be happy because I'm happy. Not because some drug is making me.

So the moral of this story is... we all have the spirit to help us make good choices.

and as i said before i dont like drinks for the energy it gives me or any of that. i drink for the taste. i can drink an XXL monster and then go to sleep right afterwards. and it depends on if its addicting to you. i know that i havent had an energy drink in a month probably and i dont really care but i have friends who have to have one every day. that is a problem. its all based on how you are affected by that drink.

That isn't a bad thing. Some people really do need anti-depressants because they cannot pull out of depression. They feel sad, when they shouldn't feel sad. It's a very real illness. I actually support anti-depressants.

It's not quite base on how it affects you. What if a guy drinks alcohol a little now and then. He doesn't get drunk.
Is it still bad?
Although, I hate the taste of Colas and other caffeinated drinks. They taste like chemicals. xd I have a weird sense of taste.

I'm not saying anti-depressants are bad. I'm just saying that I don't like taking them. Just like caffinated drinks. I have a friend who is depressed a lot. I don't know if she's taking anti-depressants but I wouldn't hate her if she did. She's my friend and she needs all the help she can get. It's just that caffine to me (like anti-depressants) is artifical. It's only temporary. I want to live my life to where I don't need to take anything in order to have energy (except for food and rest) or to be happy.

I certainly see where you're coming from Art, it would be best if no one needed any type of drug or medicine. I know you're not condemning anti-depressants. I also feel that these types of drugs can be over-prescribed. However, I fell that almost all tri-cylclic drugs can be a great tool in overcoming depression or any other type of mood disorders. Paxil, Zoloft, Wellbutrin and Prozac are the most commonly used drugs for depression and illnesses like that and have been fantastic in helping treat mood disorders. I know you don't want to take them, but at sometime in your life, you may find that you are depressed and if it lasts for longer than 6 months, this type of treatment may be the most appropriate for you at that time. Let's hope you never need it, but if you do, it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Well I don't think caffeine and alcohol are in the same category...
We've been advised to stay away from caffeine, but we're left to make our own decisions and it won't keep you from doing temple baptisms.
I personally don't drink it because I don't want to risk getting addicted or anything.
But the thing about caffeine I always get asked about by non-members is "But what about chocolate? There's caffeine in chocolate..."
XD I always get stuck on that one.

I agree with Link. I don't drink it too much but sometimes I do. There is some caffeine in root beer and I love root beer floats. It depends on how much you do. My bishop drinks coke and he's a great guy.
