"Ana, hold still! It'll come out blurry if you keep moving."
"Evieeee, I don't wanna sit here, the sun's in my eyes..."
"I need a portrait for class! Hold still. I'll buy you a pony."
"Really?"
"No."
Ana sighed, but tried to hold still nonetheless. Her guardian Evie knelt a short distance away, aiming her camera carefully. The sunlight that reflected off the camera lens made Ana squint.
"Nnghf," she muttered under her breath, wishing they could have come to the park to play instead of doing one of Evie's homework assignments.

Nyoko was glad to get out of the house, even if it was only for a little while. Kyuubi was moving out and going to live in a rather nice four-bedroom house with Kyoko and her family... Meaning there was one less person to look after Anima, so it was becoming harder and harder to find any spare time between looking after the 10-year-old (in mind) girl and working at The Den. But today was the perfect day to go out into the world and admire the beauty of Mother Earth. It was sunny, and just warm enough without being too hot. It was an ideal day for the Kitsune woman...
And during her stroll through the park, she happened to come upon Evie and Anastasia. Needless to say, the little Scent caught her eyes. But as the girl was currently occupied with being the subject of a picture, she waited calmly just inside her range of vision, her four tails flicking slightly.

The shutter clicked a series of times, and Evie stood.
"There," she said, grinning slightly. "Let's see Mister Lynch give me crap about these. Cute as a button, Ana."
Ana flushed and beamed, leaping off the rock Evie had had her perch on for the last half hour and running around, even turning a cartwheel or two.
"WHEEEEEoooohnosorry!"
It seemed she'd cartwheeled right into a woman with four tails. Oh dear.

Luckily for Ana, Nyoko had good reflexes. It was something that came naturally when one lived with a lustful Kitsune, an 18-year-old vampire who was a little bit sadistic, and his twin sister - who had the mind of a 10-year-old. She needed to have good reflexes so she could keep Kyuubi in check, make sure Animus wasn't on the verge of one of his fits, and keep Anima out of trouble.
As soon as she was cartwheeled into, Nyoko fell onto her back and grabbed Ana's midsection, hoisting her up and grinning at the enthusiastic girl.
"I think you better watch where you're going, next time. You might hurt someone," she teased lightly.

"I'm sorry," Ana squeaked, mortified. "I-I didn't see you, and then you were there and I didn't mean to-"
"HEY!"
Evie, looking over and seeing only a stranger holding onto her kid, stormed over with a dangerous look on her face.
"Leggo!" she snapped, grabbing Ana and pulling her away. "What're you playing at?"
"Evie, it's okay! Honest, she wasn't doing anything!"
Evie remained suspicious, glaring at the woman with distinct distrust.

"Ah, don't worry about it. I was a kid once, and I had my fair share of accidents like this," Nyoko soothed, grinning at Ana. When Evie stormed over, one of her ears flicked slightly at her tone of voice, but she displayed no signs of being caught doing anything wrong. Though, without Ana on top of her, she carefully got up, brushing off her backside and standing to her full height of 5'4" - a height that wasn't at all very impressive.
"Your little girl cartwheeled into me, and I figured I'd save her from getting all scraped up by catching her. Sorry if you don't approve," she said lightly, waving one hand dismissively. It was probably her punky appearance that set the woman off. She got that response rather often when she wore her beloved fishnet.

Evie was unmoved, keeping a tight hold on Ana's arm.
"Hmm," she said, eyes flicking over the woman. She hesitated, looking again. Okay. Clearly she needed better glasses - she could have sworn the woman had tails. Not just one. Four.
Ana patiently twisted her arm out of Evie's grip, and walked back to the woman.
"Sorry," she said again.

"Don't worry about it, sweetie. I'll admit I'm a bit overprotective of Anima, and she's a lot older than you," Nyoko said, smiling and waving her hand dismissively. If Evie or Ana looked closely, they might have seen the hint of fangs in that smile.

Gritting her teeth, not swayed by the stranger's apparent total normalcy and utter harmlessness - if one could call a fanged and tailed woman harmless - Evie allowed Ana to wander back over to her, though Evie's hand was taking firm grip of her pepper spray. Just in case.
"You're pretty," Ana said promptly, eyeing the woman's tails with envy. "Who's Anima?"

"And you're adorable," Nyoko commented, giving another small smile. "Anima's a very good friend of mine. And I do my best to keep her safe, much like your mother is doing for you right now."

Ana looked over her shoulder to see Evie glowering at the pair of them, her mouth set in a thin line.
"Mm," Ana said noncommittally, wishing Evie wasn't so certain that there was nothing in the world but axe murderers and psychopaths.
