Some days Meilin honestly wondered if she'd ever find her sister.

She laid by the watering hole, the stars gleaming overhead, the sun having fallen some hours ago. They had finally stopped to rest, somewhere near the river. The pale female, glowing in the dark almost as brilliant as the moon itself, stared at the large orb while her weighted tail thumped the grass absently. Damn that lying b*****d for taking her...

Was it possible that her sister was actually no longer of this world?

Her eyes closed, masking away her worries as she rested her head on her paws, thoughts heavy and grim. Her chest suddenly seemed swollen with emotion, a feeling that would not subside, not even enough for her to rest properly. She missed her, the only friend that she'd had until she met Vian.

~Ausi, where on earth are you, sister?~

Vian was facing similar thoughts. Of course, his were a little less dreadful. He had no thoughts on his sister being gone from his world. He had confidence in his youngest sibling, but the protective urges of an older brother still drove him to find her and keep up his relentless search. His loyalty was obvious unquestionable. But for the first time in ages he felt a strange sense of companionship with another. Now, he had always been a friendly lion. But a true, unbreakable bond was not something he formed often, since most of his attention had always been reserved first and foremost to his siblings.

He found it was different with Meilin. This wasn't a bad thing, for he admired her courage and spirit. Of all the people he could have grown in a strong friendship with, he couldn't think of anyone better. And though the nights were long in his search, they were pleasant for the most part. She made it as such.

Being in the habit of a nice run before taking refuge for the night, he returned to their decided resting spot to find his friend brooding by watering hole. He slipped gently over to join her, first in the polite silence that offered confidence and the posibility of sharing long shadowed thoughts.

Meilin glanced up, but only partially over her shoulder as Vian joined her, then back again.

"Some days I wonder..." She admitted quietly after a short span of silence. Meilin was not one to beat around the bush, or waste words on the obvious. He'd had his run and returned in what seemed a good enough mood, she didn't need to ask if it was enjoyable or not, though normally she would have asked if it had been uneventful.

Vian didn't seem to mind as she skipped directly to the point. While he was used to more blunt and matter-of-fact type personalities, that wasn't the reason for his ease with it. It was because it meant they weren't simply going through motions anylonger, ones such as awkward small talk that was meant to prove their friendship and concern. They were beyond that point and that was, in fact, a rare thing.

He waited for her to speak, since there was obviously something she had on her mind. Whether she wanted to talk about it or not was the question. When she began he was patient, as always, and careful of not pushing her to explain herself. "Wonder?" he asked gently, leaving it open for her to continue without seeming too pressing.

"It's been so long, and the company that Ausi was with when she left..."

This wasn't easy to talk about, however, and Meilin found her words catching in her throat. It was hard enough to think it might be possible, but to voice it out loud? Somehow it felt as though she were condeming her hope to die.

She lowered her head to her paws, shutting her eyes, willing back tears of uncertainty and winning, though doing nothing to console her worries.
"Some days I wonder if I'll ever find her." She finally admitted quietly.

"Well, I suppose it is possible that you can't or won't find her," He began, almost sounding as if he was about to start a very insensitive speech. But instead he paused, looking out at the calm, nocturnal landscape as if it gave answers or perhaps insight.

"But I've found, oddly enough, that when one worries....most of the concerns rarely come up in fact. Those with any sort of heart worry-it is natural," he let his gold eyes slide shut for a moment before peering them open again in the dark and looking gently at her, "Perhaps...we dwell on the worst posibilities because it is so much easier to in fact find that our worst fears were wrong, rather then have them realized unexpectedly." Perhaps realizing he probably sounded like a rambling old fool he chuckled, "Life tends to have a sense of humor. I bet right now your sister is sleeping soundly with friends in return for your worry."

She had to admit she was surprised by the start of his answer, and looked at him as such, but it wasn't long before he went on and put her mind at rest that he wasn't showing an unplesant side of himself, but taking the same realistic approach that she herself would. Whoever said logic couldn't be comforting was clearly wrong.

"Well wouldn't that be just like her? I'll have to be sure to give her my thanks, making me worry for nothing." She smiled a little, watching the striped male.

"Well, that is the job of a family, isn't it? To worry each other silly," Vian murmured, looking mildly amused at the idea. When he glanced at her he was able to offer a very warm, relaxed smile. It was obvious he had convidence in the fact that, realistically speaking, they had nothing to worry about. And the feeling lingered gingerly in the air around him, like an aura almost. Perhaps these sorts of qualities were what made, in essance, leaders.

Meilin's eyes narrowed, lips pursing in a very rare gesture of playful teasing. If it had been anybody else they might take her seriously, but Vian would know well enough by now that Meilin didn't rely on such dramatic displays to get her point across when she was annoyed. She preferred to cut with her words and a quick, heated glare or two. Only one had ever managed to cross her to the point of more, and he was days behind them now.

"You're right, as usual. Aren't you ever wrong about anything?" Yet again, just a tease, and one that only preceded the female rising to all fours to give a languid stretch before strolling over with a lazy gait. The tip of her ringed tail batted at his shoulder as she went past, her intended destination being the watering hole itself, so that she could lap up a few drinks of the cool liquid. She was yet unaware, their blossoming friendship wasn't the only reason that she'd started growing more playful over the past few weeks, though it had by and large been the reason she felt so comfortable around him. Her inhibition was slowly loosing an age old battle.

Vian found himself reflecting her playful mood as well. He leaned forward something, giving a gentle n** to her tail as it passed. It was almost what one would call a 'love bite'. "Oh, I'm sure the stories of my mistakes far out rank those of my success," he chuckled. He was a very capable sort, but far from perfection. He watched idly as she went to get a drink, his yellow eyes looking bright in the moonlight.

"Modest too." Another gentle tease, though the words did ring true.

Her tail twitched to one side, almost flippantly as she turned almost about-face. Watching the water ripples as she lifted her head away from the surface of the pool. Smirking to herself, not that Vian could see, she settled down into a pose resembling a Sphinx, lifted a paw as if to preen herself, but instead sent a harmless trail in his direction, now grinning slightly in his direction. The invitation to play was clear. Even they deserved to unwind and have some fun every so often, and she was curious to see if he had a playful side about him as well.

The splash nicked his face and trickled into his mane. Licking some water drops from his whiskers he slide to his paws. "Envious, are we?" He teased. He loped over to the water, his movements smooth and sleak. He leaned forward, dipping a large paw into the liquid before sweeping it in her direction. He had to admit, it felt strange good to do this. When he had last had close company he had been in the desert and there was no wasting of water there. Not that the water was the only thing bringing his comfort.

The female's response was to duck backwards, though she did catch some of it still on her head anyway, with a small but light hearted laugh. Shaking out the longer tuft of fur atop her skull, Meilin gave Vian a look that promised something more. They'd started something and she intended to see it finished.

"I don't need to envy what I already have, myself." She called back, just seconds before launching herself at him in an all out pounce, aiming to knock him into the watering hole if she could catch him by surprise at all.

Vian reacted quickly, due to good reflexes, and lifted to stand slightly on his back paws. He let her "hit" him, but used this two free front paws to turn it into more of a catch. Using the momentum he let them fall backwards into the water. Then twisting he rolled him over into the shallows. He looked down at Lin with a small smile, strands of his mane clinging together and dripping down near her face as he chuckled.

In a comically rare moment Meilin's eyes widened just as he pulled her down. Giving a startled shout, they hit the water with a splash, and before she could retaliate or react he had her pinned underneath in the shallows. Their eyes met.

Her breath caught in her throat.

After a few long seconds like that, a water droplet caught her on the nose, which finally brought her out of her daze. In embarrassment she looked away, moving quickly to get out from underneath him, baffled. What was that all about...? Before he could ask, she blurted the first excuse that came to mind, avoiding eye contact.

"We'd better get some rest. Tomorrow might be a long day."
