Why is it that once a band gains popularity and recognition that most of them deserve that they really start to....well suck? Take once dcent bands for example Lacuna Coil, Cradle, Dimmu (ect, really mainstream stuff here) who used to be really good or so i have heard on the later two, and now are pretty much rejected by the Metal Community. Lacuna Coil used to be really great. Look at In a Reverie or Unleashed Memories and then look at KarmaCode. Very much lacking, in my opinon. This seems to happen when bands get popularity like Within Tempation- Mother Earth and Enter were great releases. Silent Force and later ~ not to great.
Why does tis happen to bands? I'm not saying ti happens to all of them just a good number of them.

And here is probably where someone will say "Oh, Mastodon blew it with Blood Mountain, that albums blows, Leviathan is 1000x better."
rolleyes
Anyways, it's probably due to line-up changes, the way their record label wants to play, or maybe the band just wants to change direction. I mean you have bands like Cemetary, Sentenced, Entombed, etc. changing their sound drastically over their careers and they're still pretty unheard of compared to other bands. So it's not just the mainstream.

Probably because they end up making what the fans want to hear.
And I liked Blood Mountain.

i don't find all the mainstream bands neccesarily bad i mean i listen to in flames from time to time..etc can't really be bothered..i know most people think that alot of mainstream bands suck but that's why i joined the guild...just because at the metal forum everyone has issues with a band that can actually make a living out of their music and that about within temptation...they did join roadrunner records you know... xp

At times, you see, It feels like being popular gets to their heads and money and fame can corrupt. Not all bands are like this, It has just been an observation i have witnessed.
Mainstream < Underground.

I will be honest with you, I tend to avoid the more mainstream acts and find myself drawn closer to the underground scene. For the most part, you will find many bands that have been playing for years because they just plain love the music, it's that kind of dedication that I like to hear.
Edit: Then again, most of the music I listen to thrives off of an underground scene, so.

I agree that the underground bands are usually better because they do it for love of the music, rather than money, and that makes all the difference in the world.

but i can't really say for sure...i mean...in holland i actually know very few metal fans...the ones i do know are my friends and they mostyl think alike about these isseus...its really no big deal if you like the music... but if i compare myself to the metal forum i guess i listen to allot of mainstream...but then again also to allot of underground...so i would say i'd be right in the middle...

I would say it all depends on the band and the quality of their music. I know plenty of famous bands that are better than when they were underground....but very few.
But, I do believe the reason for this is because you fall in love with what the band plays and then they change it, losing the sound you fell in love with and instead of accepting it, its like "OMG THAT BAND SUX CUZ THEY MADE IT BIG AND THEY SUCK NOW BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT!!!"

I was called a n00b 3 days ago. Because i was a stupid mainstream child who liked KoRn. I just laughed my a** off, i don't mind telling people that i like the first few album of KoRn a lot. That doesn't make anyone a stupid mainstream child.
You just have to listen what you like, and i does never matter if they are mainstream or not.
But i have to say that i prefere underground. But thats because their gigs are less expensive.
