Hajimemashite! Lesson 3
Traditionally in Japan, introductions are very formal and follow a strict ettiquete.
Some words to know to introduce yourself:
Hajimemashite ( hah-gee-may-mah-sh-teh ) - How do you do.
This, above, isn't a question, keep in mind. Also, you must bow when you say it!
Watashi wa _____ desu. - I am _____. ( wah-tah-she wah _____ deh-ss. )
わたしは___です。
or!
Namae wa ____ desu. - My name is _____. ( nah-mah-eh wah ______ de-ss. )
なまえわ___です。
or!
Boku wa _____ desu. - I am _____. ( bow-koo wah _____ de-ss. )
ぼくは___です。
or!
Watakushi wa _____ desu. - I am _____. ( wah-tah-koo-she wa _____ de-ss. )
わたくしは___です。
The first one you would use to introduce yourself to pretty much anyone, unless it's an extremely formal situation, which you would use 'watakushi', the fourth one. Namae is also pretty formal, but commonly used. Boku is only for boys, and it's used between boys of equal or lower status, keep in mind. Girls, don't use it~! >_<
Also, something I'd like everyone to note: I don't use the symbol for 'wa' (わ) for the second 'wa' in those sentences. You're supposed to use 'ha' (は). (as in watashi wa, you'd use ha for the 2nd wa. get it?)
Continuing on!
After you say your name and how do you do, you would say 'doozo yoroshiku.' ( doh-zoh yoh-roh-sh-ku ) This means 'It's nice to meet you!'. And you should always say it, always! It's polite! You also bow when you say this.
Next up! Your age! Your 'sai'! (sah-ee)
'~sai' is an ending on a number, a ban (bah-n). I've introduced numbers before, but let's review.
1 - ichi
2 - ni
3 - san
4 - shi ( yon )
5 - go
6 - roku
7 - nana ( shichi )
8 - hatchi
9 - kyuu
10 - ju
11 - ju ichi
12 - ju ni
13 - ju san
14 - ju yon
15 - ju go
16 - ju roku
17 - ju nana
18 - ju hatchi
19 - ju kyuu
20 - ni ju
Do you see a pattern in the tens and twenties?
If not, PM me and I'll help you figure it out!! :3
Now for ages:
just add '~sai' to the end to get your age. Once you've got your age, ( we'll use mine for an example. ) you plug it into a phrase you've already learned! Can you guess?
WATASHI WA _____ DESU! ( I am ___. )
This phrase works for a lot of stuff, so it's good to commit it to memory!
And my age, ju-go, plugged into it..
Watashi wa ju-go-sai desu.
I am 15.
わたしは15さいです。
But!!!! IMPORTANT NOTE! some numbers, in addition to adding '~sai', add a word 'slur' so to speak.
these numbers are:
1 - issai
8 - hassai
10 - jussai
this applies to all numbers ending in 1, 8, and 0, but ONLY WITH '~sai' ON THE END!! REMEMBER THIS!
That concludes today's lesson~! I'll leave the vocab list up to you! Study hard, and don't give up! GAMBATTE~!
