Chapter One: The Book

Blood. It spattered about as screams could be heard in the background. She wanted it to stop, this nightmare. She tried to shake herself violently, but she could not awaken.
Please, stop...

Finally, she jumped up from the slumber that tortured her so. Her vision was fuzzy, but as she turned towards her alarm clock she could just barely make out the neon green, flashing digits to read "7.13". She jumped from her bed with little effort and gasped, "Crap! I'm late!"

There was no time to shower, so she threw on her uniform, which hadn't been washed in three days. She couldn't bother her mom with the laundry because, well... Her mom would get mad. And she couldn't do the wash herself because she was to busy with her school work and her part-time job. Even on weekends, she was busy. But she wanted to be. She didn't want to spend that much time in her house. She didn't like it. "It" being constant fear and worry.

After putting on her school jacket she darted silently into the kitchen. She stopped and looked around. It was a mess. Dishes in the sink, food spills dripped about, booze bottles sitting on the counters and table, and it stank. She went to the refrigerator and found a yogurt that hadn't expired yet. She found a clean spoon in a drawer and tip-toed to the door. But she could never be so perfectly silent. Clumsy little her bumped into the table causing a bottle to roll over and crash on the floor.

"Yukirin Tsugaru!" she heard her father yell from her parent's bedroom. She could tell by the way he yelled that he was drunk again. She knew what would happen now. She dashed to the door, only to by stopped by the force of her father pulling on her backpack. He spun her around and slapped her in the face. It stung. "Why do you have to be so god-damn noisy. Your mother and I are trying to sleep and we don't need you going around breaking glass! Got it?"

Yukirin could only nod her head in agreement. She whimpered like a beaten dog, "I... have to go... to school..." She pulled away and slipped out the door. All her father did was mumble. She got off lucky that time, just a slap in the face. Still, her heart was pounding so loud her eardrums almost hurt. She quickened her pace and ran down the street, hoping she wouldn't miss the train.

Her school was so far away that she had to take the 7:35 train to get there, then a mile. She was lucky if she made it there by 8:00. But today, she wasn't lucky. She missed the train and had to wait 12 minutes for the next one. She was just glad that her school paid for any necessary train fare. All she had to do was flash her student ID and she got herself a free ride. The train came, she boarded, found a seat, and began to work on some half finished homework. She was so busy trying to finished it, that she almost missed her stop. When she got off, she thanked the station master and ran as fast as she could.

By the time she got to school, she was supposed to be in first period, which for her was health class. When she finally wove her way through the school class had five minutes left. She dashed through the open door and collapsed into her seat.

"Thank you for joining us, Miss Tsugaru." her sensei said, sarcastically. "I just finished explaining to the class that we have a three page topic report due next Friday. Everyone picked topics already, so you are left with 'Dreams and Sleep'. You know how we do reports in this class so do you think you can you handle that?"

Yukirin jotted down her new assignment in her homework pad. When hand hand stopped writing she stood up, bowed apologetically, and nodded her head 'yes'. The bell rang and the class was dismissed. She had study hall next and decided to head to the library to see if she could find any books to help her with her topic. She searched forever until she came upon a book titled Halloween Dreams. She picked it up, thinking the title was cute. She scanned the pages, but found they were empty.
How strange...

She decided that she would still check the book out, along with two others that would help her research. All through the day she was curious about the book with no words, not even a single picture. She daydreamed in class and got a detention, not something on her to-do-list. At least she didn't have work that day.
"I guess this is good, considering I won't be home until later. But when Mom finds out I got another detention, she'll beat me again." Yukirin sighed as she trudged to the detention room. Once there, she took her seat and rummaged through her bag to fin the empty book. One of the other girls in detention plopped next to her, blew a pink bubble gum bubble and smirked, "Hey, Yuki! Watcha doin' now? Yukirin ignored her, because she was a very annoying girl. When Yukirin didn't respond the girl looked down, her eyes grew wide, then she poked Yukirin to get her attention. "Hey Yuki, what's that bruise?"

Her eyes grew wide. 'Oh no! She saw!' She thought of a quick excuse "Someone pushed me on the train this morning," she lied, staring at the black-and-blue mark on her thigh. The girl seemed to believe it, then got up and walked away. Yukirin always had to make up lies for the bruises her parents gave her. She was a naturally clumsy girl, so most people did believe they were accidents. But how long could she hide the fact that her parents beat her, abused her. Long enough she thought.

When she finally arrived home she dashed to her room, hoping no one would hear her. When she got to her room, she could hear her parents arguing in their room. She pressed her ear against her wall to hear what they were saying.

"I can't believe her," he father spat. "I swear one day I'm gonna-"

"Shut up Shishio! I'm tired of hearing this! She's a good-for-nothing and you know it. I shouldn't have agreed to have her with you."

"Yeah, well maybe we should give her up! Maybe I'll leave! Maybe-"

"You and your 'maybes'! You're the one who's drunk all the time!"

"Well if you weren't such a-"

"Don't start with me!"

Yukirin stopped listening. It was the same things she always heard them say. It was like watching reruns of a soap opera. She plopped on her bed and sighed. She took out the empty book, and stared at it, as if it would save her from this misery. And then, words appeared. She blinked to make sure she wasn't imagining it. But they were there. They read:
"What is your dream?"

The book was speaking directly to her. She spoke back, without a second thought. "I dream of freedom. I dream of being anywhere other than here..." As if the book was a person, new words appeared and they read:
"Your dream will come true."

As soon as her eyes finished the last word of that sentence, a blinding light flooded her room. She winced, closed her eyes. She felt a force tug on her body and then, when she opened her eyes again, she was somewhere else. She sat in the middle of a cobblestone street with dimly lit street lights lining it. She could barely see anything, even though the moon was shining brightly. She could see a reflection, so she knew there was water.
"Wha-? Where am I?"
