Sweat. She could almost feel it accumulate as she trudged on with the sun beating on her back.
This was why she preferred the winter season. Not only did she feel more comfortable in it because she was a child of it, but because she invited the snowy air more than the sun. All the sun did was ruin things, and then Tanenbaum. How could she have let herself go just like that? But... She was conflicted. Everything would have been pleasant if not for the fact that she had to walk around bearing such a large stomach. It was very uncomely of her, so she took extra effort each day since the transformation to hide herself from others, whether it was behind a shade of trees or whatnot. After all, she thought she blended almost nicely with the trees--if not for the fact that the summer sun had allowed some foliage to dry up, eliminating the lush green they once had.
Tanenbaum would have been better at hiding, she thought, thinking back to her dearest tree. A heavy sigh escaped her, and she felt her stomach strain. "Yes... Towards the shade I shall seek," she said softly, heading towards a particularly large tree that had plenty shade for her to perhaps lay in. She could even feel her poinsettia and holly adornments drooping with each step; today was definitely not her day. She must have looked like a disastrous Christmas to anyone who saw her.

It was almost noon and already the day was so hot!
Settia trudged on through the forest on her normal walk. Her grandson had not accompanied her today for he had left very early this morning for only the Spirits know where. The red poinsettia mare flicked her golden tail to chase away the flies that were bothering her. She knew that this was one of the last hot spells before things finally started to cool down and she couldn't wait. Her favorite season, winter, was coming and then her poor poinsettia's wouldn't have to be so droopy anymore.
It wasn't that Settia particularly liked the cold, it was just the season that she was born from. Being a Poinsettia Christmas mare, winter and the holiday season were her favorite time of year. It was also her mates favorite time as he too was the only other Christmas Soquili that she knew of. Thinking of Dyami, Settia gave a heavy sigh, more of happieness than of sadness.

Ears swiveled in the direction of distinct noise, and holly decorations shifted in turn. It sounded like steady oncoming beats of hooves, and Lieu fretted, turning her head to the right, then the left to spot whoever was coming. She couldn't move out from the tree's shade, which she was already in, or that would have been too much trouble. She sighed, then whickered to make her presence known.
"If you are sensible, you would do good to clear your sight of me," she warned. Though normally she was better tempered, she had given up to her bodily urges to agitation. Would this be how one always felt if laden with such a burden..?
She snorted and settled herself onto the cooler grass below. Though she wouldn't admit it, she needed company. The mare was just not the type to let others see her in a state unbefitting her usual beauty and elegance.

Settia stopped at the whickering and cocked her head to one side. She hadn't known that someone else was near by and hoped she had not interupted anything. And then she heard a voice that sounded not at all pleased.
"Clear my sight of you? Now why would I want to do such a thing? Especially since I really can't see you." she replied to the voice that was so clearly female. It sounded a bit aggitated and the red poinsettia mare didn't like it when others were upset and of course her curiosity was going to get the better of her and she was going to see if she could be of some help.

She closed her eyes at the sound of the response. Ah, at least it was not a stallion. However, she didn't seem to waver in spite of her warning. It was almost as if the green mare's threat tempted the stranger to see her more so. Great.
"Well, I haven't a clue," came the sarcastic tone, "Maybe I'm a big monstrosity waiting to rid the path of passersby." Well, she was half truthful, anyways.
Then she shook her head roughly and blew, figuring her words wouldn't exactly be a hindrance to the stranger. "Who is it that is so thoughtfully inclined to come by this way, by the by?" she called once more.
She knew, somewhere, unconsciously that she needed a companion to see her through this rough patch, even if her exterior was so unwilling to bare it.

Settia titled her head to the other side now. Big monstrosity? What would make this seemingly feminine voice a monstrosity? Maybe she was one of those Kalona or Skinwalkers her mate had told her about. If so she would have to be careful.
"They call me Settia and who is it that thinks that they are a monstrosity? Are you friend or foe or Kalona even?" she asked. One never could be too causious. Especially since things weren't always as they seemed anymore. Still she didn't think that whom ever she was talking too was a monstrosity, the red mare was just too nieve sometimes for her own good.

"Settia," came the reply, in a voice a bit softer and calm than before. The sound of it almost rang a bell in her head, and the green mare let out a light giggle even when the stranger inquired whether she was a kalona. Why would another soquili risk the chance of asking something if it was a kalona, then get eaten straight afterwards? Ah, well, she would enlighten the other.
"Such a wonderful name you possess, Settia. I am Lieu," she called out with a chirp of happiness in her voice now. "And although I am afraid that I am not in a condition that I am accustomed to, I am a friend, if one requests it. Now, could I have the pleasure of seeing whom I am speaking to?"
Lieu flicked a few hair strands back, subconsciously preparing herself for something to gain sight of her. One must always have composure, even in the most unwanted of times.

"Thank you. You possess a wonderful name yourself, Lieu." the red mare replied politely as she walked foward to clear the last few remaining trees between her and the other mare.
"You may certainly have the pleasure of seeing the one whom you are speaking to." she said as she stepped into view. The pointsettia mare flicked her tail out making the flowers that were there rustle a little bit. In front of her, she was suprised to see another whom was born from the holiday spirit such as herself. After giving the mare a quick glancing over she also noted how it seemed that mare was with foal.

Of course, Lieu thought a bit too egotistically to the counter-compliment of her name. She turned towards the sounds of where the oncoming hooves were meeting ground, donning a small smile on her face.
"Glad to be obliged," she said softly as Settia came in sight. She blinked once, then twice in succession as if she were looking at a mirage; the mare standing in front of her was like her counterpart, yet they were also similar. She gazed at the poinsettia around Settia that matched the big one that adorned her own neck. Were they somehow related, and neither knew of the other until now? They even had the same hair color! But it couldn't be -- they were not of the same race. The thought quickly faded from her mind as she focused more on her company.
"You are quite splendid to the eye," she stated without a second thought. And when she realized Settia was looking over her heavy underside, she shifted uncomfortably and put a leg forward, attempting to cover her body.
"Don't look there," she said, blushing embarrassingly. The red over Lieu's face made a strange view, covering her white and green face. "It is quite disturbing to be seen in this situation with another beautiful mare. I apologize."

The older mare smiled at the other very splendidly colored Soquili before her. "You are rather splendid to the eye as well and I am rather glad I ran into you today. For a while I thought my mate and I, and a few friends of ours, were the only Holiday soquili there were in this land." she said excited at meeting someone like her.
The younger mare was more green and white but had the same color of mane and tail as she did and also was adorn with a large poinsettia about her neck. She had never seen another with the same flowers as she and was glad to have found one.
"Why would it be distrubing? If looks are anything, I would say that at this moment you are much more the beautiful mare than I am." she said unable to figure out why the other seemed unhappy with her disposition. For Settia, pregnancy was the most beautiful thing in this world.

"Pleased to meet you, but today of all days!" Lieu was flustered. If only Settia had picked some other day, perhaps even a day in their element, the winter, to stumble upon her! But her unshapely body -- in this complexion, it was just all too much for Lieu. Well, she had to make the most of her situation anyways, so she inquired further, "There are others like us?"
The thought dared to intrigue her. The idea had a combined effect of both pleasantly surprising and unsettling her. It was good to know that there were others out there that sung to the tune of her season; there would be more to bond with, more to enjoy with the same thoughts and ideas; yet, now her and Tanenbaum were not purely unique. It had seemed so perfect when the two of them met, but now there were others that made her and her love not stand out so much. But family was a good thing, she supposed.
Lieu coughed, almost choking as she heard Settia's response to her predicament. If only pregnancy came without the troubles of causing the body to fatten. "And that is where we differ in thought, dear Settia," she retorted. "But all is well, I suppose, if you are viewing me in your own vision--come, join, beside me if you will. How have you been faring in this weather?" Finally, a polite smile came to her face. "It is a bit hard, laden with my future within me, but I attempted to make the best of it. If only I found children with Tanenbaum in the winter, perhaps I would be feeling more enthused... but I don't suppose you have shared the same thoughts as I?" She looked inquisitively at Settia.

The red mare smiled gently at the others question. "Why yes, there are a few others out there like us. My dear Dyami is one, he is a red, white, and green stallion, if you ever come across him. And then there are three others, 2 mares and a stallion and for the longest time I thought we were the only five." she explained, very glad to find that there were others like her and her mate out there. She would most deffinately have to share the news with him when they next met.
Settia came at the mares bidding and laid down beside her in the shade. The heat was getting to her now that she had noticed how much cooler the shade was. "Thank you. This weather is rather uncomfortable, though being dark in color does not help much either. But soon the winds will cool the land down again and my favorite season will be on its way." she said in her gentle voice. "And you are right about me not sharing the same thoughts as you. My children were born in the middle of winter, January actually. I did not have to bare my burden in this kind of heat. I can't imagine what it must be like for you."

Settia's mate, two mares and another stallion? So there were a lot more than Lieu thought there were, but it was also possible that there were more than five out there, too. She couldn't decide whether to feel disappointed that she had lost her uniqueness, or enthralled by the discovery.
As Settia settled beside her, Lieu provided silence for a brief moment as she continued to reflect on the news, and possibly newfound friend. She automatically found a connection with Settia absolutely as they were of the same season, but it was apparent that the red poinsettia mare held a more positive view on things than Lieu, which may have been for the better.
"It doesn't aid to be of the darker tones, unfortunately; I ponder how my mate manages on occasion, but then I realize he takes after a tree, and if trees find the ability to rest under the sun's great heat day after day without drying out, it may be that he, like a great pine, can not be swayed by the harsh rays." She smiled at the fanciful thought and closed her eyes, imagining winter. "What blessed luck, I can only hope that my offspring shall develop a resistance to this weather... And ah, winter, when dreams embodied in snow grace the grounds of this world, when the chilling breeze welcomes its way into your heart, when home feels most like home..."
Her eyes flickered open once more as a warm breeze blew past her, not able to alleviate the summer's wrath at all. She sighed and turned to Settia, asking, "How do the other two mares and stallion appear, if I may ask? Anything like you or me, or your mate, perhaps? And, are you all of the same family?"
