Okay, so, my sister came home from school the other day with a picture frame type thing (You know, a squre made with 4 tounge depressors). Anyway, she had decorated each edge with words in gltter paint.
All the words were in Chatspeak! There was 'lol' and 'sos' an 'idk' and finally 'bff'!
I was horrified!
And you now the worst part?
My sister's only seven!

It's truly horrible what this world, and the literacy along with it, has come to.

O.o I fear for the future. I'm not even kidding...I am. I remember seeing the chat speak when I was in elementary school, but we took care not to use it too often; it was mainly used in letters. I never did...thought it was a total waste of time.

The first time I encountered chat speak was in middle school and I was in -le gasp- a chat room. I didn't really use the chat speak that much then...mainly because I didn't know what the acronyms stood for. But I know sonic used to have a toy that had common chat speak phrases on it.

Cuppycake Chicky Theach her while she is young... That is our only hope... Yeah, tell her that's wrong, and if she denies it, show her why it is so. The Establishment want you to believe that text-talk is the talk of the future. Don't believe it! Now if you excuse me, I'm gonna go puke. burning_eyes

This makes me only the more thankful that I have shown my little sister this guild and what text talking can do to you. Now she likes to type and be on gaia in this guild. I have seen the things she types and they are good spelling with no text talk. She's 11 years old though so she's not perfect but she's one of the best in her class.

Me, myself, am also glad that that you showed me this guild. It's a great place with no "txt tlk", so I know what people are really saying! Also, why is there chatspeak in elementry? Most kids in there probably don't understand most "txt tlk"!

My Grandma and I were talking about the new Honors English class at my school, Film. It's a course on how televsion has influenced the English language. She jokingly said that soon we'll need a class for how the internet has changed English. I tell you, I felt a chill go down my spine. eek

Your sister is still young, so there is still hope to save her from a life of using Chatspeak. *determined look*

I'm not sure if BF or BFF is chatspeak slimply because it has been in existence before the internet took off. I could be wrong though.

Niccea Majeare I'm not sure if BF or BFF is chatspeak slimply because it has been in existence before the internet took off. I could be wrong though. Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Even though the internet's been out a while, I believe the term "BFF" was used before it became widely accessible. Hm. Now I'm curious when this term was actually created...

Probably with the advent of friendship bracelets. And WWJD bracelets. You know, when acronyms weren't a sign of laziness just conveniences.
The household internet can't be much more than 10 years old. And sites directed towards youth such as Neopets became more frequent around 2000. Not only that but text messaging is also a relatively new concept.
I knew the term BFF 6 years before I knew how to get online and talk to other people.
