It was dark here, very dark. Light crystal blue eyes peered through the trees and bushes trying to see ahead of her. It was daylight still she could tell from the occasional patch of warmth amongst the trees but it was close to night light in the forests ahead. The thin and slightly lanky mare had come in the hopes of finding a nice place to let frustrations out and think. This was not a good place. While the darkness did not scare her it did make her a bit wary, she didn't know what could lurk in there.

She snorted at herself and shook her mane knocking a feather loose before charging into the unknown blackness. Ever since her talk with her uncle she had been a bit unstable. She wasn't sure what to think of herself anymore and her hopes of her father helping her had left when she couldn't find him. She wanted badly to pull her old self together but there were to many fragments to get her old toughness back. With a flick of her tail she lifted her head, an old habit that gave her a confident look, before trotting on. So what if it was dark here, it was dark at night too and nothing ever got her there. Why would it be any different here?

A black figure moved through the woods like she was a piece of the shadows themselves. Her glowing eyes pierced the inky darkness like twin stars risen from the depths of hell. A long mane that was groomed to perfection fell gracefully about the sleek neck and a thick spaded tail flicked behind her.

NightShade paused raising her head high as she caught the scent of another mare on what she thought of as her territory. With a snarl and a stamp she moved forward lowering her head so that her muzzle almost touched the ground and her back curved like that of a big cat slinking low to the ground.

The kalona weaved her head back and forth making her chains jingle lightly announcing her presence like ghostly chimes. The roses on her legs trembled like leaves in the wind with each step the mare took and the sparkles on her body shimmered, her opaque wings were folded down so tightly against her back that they could be seen, except for the slightest shimmer of blue.

Her face changed taking on a look of fear to see if she could lull this mare into a false sense of security, the only things left on her body that might have giver away her true heritage were the backward curved horns upon her head, but with the other two tines some missed those hints to the true creature beneath.

If this mare ahead was truly as dense as some of Shade's other prey had been, she'd find out far to late that appearances could be deceiving.

Amoena paused hearing the strange jingle. She strained her eyes to see in the dark to find the source and that's when she saw the almost glow of light being reflected from white. She closed her eyes for a moment or two allowing her eyes to adjust to the blackness of the deep forest. When she reopened them she could make out the shape of a horse before her. The slightly smaller frame suggested it was a mare but she couldn't be sure. Taking a few tentative steps forward she willed her daylight accustomed eyes to take in more detail. She could make out a long mane that fell upon the ground with the way her head was bowed. A set of white horns adorned her forehead and the tip of her muzzle. They looked sharp and seeing the almost glowing eyes next to them put Amoena on edge.

She took a few steps backwards not quite sure what to think of those horns. They looked like they could just be longer forms of Xantir's spikes but even if she was an innocent victim spikes were sharp and if she got to close accidental death was likely. "Hey you okay?" She asked thinking that the other might just be sick. That would certainly explain the eyes and posture and in this type of land it seemed like illnesses would run rampant.

An icey blue rose petal fluttered gracefully to the ground only to be trod upon by Shade in an ominous display. Her spaded tail was still behind her in the hopes that the darkness hide it from the soft blue mare's view. She continued to move forward towards her as the mare called out to her, inside Shade giggled at the scent of fear coming off the younger female in waves. The scent was so sweet to the kalona, it was almost like a sip of wine and made Shade drunk with delirious pleasure.

Shade kept the fearful look in her eyes and looked up at Amoena as if she were afraid of the mare before her. She stood silently for a moment then forcing herself to speak in more of a feminine voice than her normal dark, gruff German accented voice she answered "I think so ...but I do believe I'm lost in this hell hole..." she looked quietly around her only turning her head slightly to scan the area.

She did hope her ruse would work because it would save her the hassle of having to find prey all over again.

She took another step backward lifting her head higher to give her a secure feeling. She was about to shout and tell her to back off but the words stuck in her throat at the scared and timid look in the others eyes. Her ears flicked backwards and she felt a bit guilty or even considering that this mare was out to hurt her in anyway.

Lost? That brought all kinds of new guilt. It wasn't so much that she knew what it was like to be lost but her brother lost his way to many times to count and at that moment she could see his face superimposed over the mares own. Her white mane shook about her slapping her neck slightly as she shook the image from her mind. "I'm not the best guide in the world but I can at least get ya out of these woods..." She said mumbling slightly. It just didn't feel like she was being herself helping out in such a way but then she wasn't quite sure exactly what was like her anymore. Maybe this was who she was supposed to be, one way to find out.

Turning her back on the other mare she nodded her head in the direction she had come from. "It's this way out."

Shade sneered in delight as the mare turned her back on the kalona, stupid stupid mare. "Oh, thank you ma'am," she followed quietly along behind after her thanks to Amoena and just plotted for a moment as they traveled. A cold foreboding wind whipped past and Shade glared darkly in the direction from which it came. Her hooves glanced softly off the ground bellow and she used her long mane to hide the fact that they were sharpened.

Shade shook her mane which made the soft blue strands flutter aside revealing the back curved horns that extended behind her head. Every horn upon her head, except the small hook on her muzzle, was stained crimson with some unknown creature's blood. The chain connecting her two uni like horns jingled a soft song even though it too was stained.

After some time Shade threw her head back and her tail lashed out at an innocent tree, the blade sliced through the bark, she sneered in her psychotic manner and let out a loud cackle "one should never turn their back on an unknown soquili!" Her huge wings flared out and she reared ready to bring down her sharp hooves, horns, and fangs down onto the lesser soquili.

Amoena was used to walking in silence but now it was giving her the creeps. Every time the chain made a sound a visible shiver ran down her spine. She glanced over her shoulder once to see if there would be a way to silence its jangle but her heart stopped and she turned back to face ahead at a more horrible sight. Blood. Her horns were stained a crimson color that was unmistakeably from blood. What was this? Why would someone be scared of being lost if they had weapons like that?

Her question was answered almost immediately as the sound of tearing tree bark drew her gaze back once again. Her blue eyes widened and before she had time to think her legs were scrambling backwards before she got crushed. It was a kalona. She had been leading a kalona this whole time. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest and she wouldn't be surprised if the demon could here it as well.

Shade could smell the fear rolling off the mare and it was almost like an aphrodisiac to her. Her large wings flared out and she rocked back on her hind legs dancing around from a moment before her fore hooves slammed back down to the earth sending up a cloud of dust and shredded leaves.

Tossing her head made the chain jingle again, the sound almost seemed to be laughing at Amoena for being so silly and blind when it came to the other mare.

Shade's hooves flashed as she reared again, with a deep growl she launched once more at Amoena her fangs glittering as she opened her mouth ready to latch onto the lighter mare's throat. Shade was short for a kalona which had given her rouse even more of an advantage, but the muscles beneath her coat buldged and rippled proving that height didn't matter when you had strength on your side.

She wasn't stupid enough to think that Amoena couldn't fight back and get away she was just hoping that her surprise attack had shocked the mare enough to discourage it.

The sky blue mare was panicking. She had meant to hold her breath in the dust cloud but had inhaled sharply instead. She was coughing violently and the sound that chain was making was clouding her thoughts even more then they already were. She imagined this was how her mother felt when under attack from that skinwalker but she had been in the open with a clean shot for an escape. Amoena was in a forest where her only chance would be hiding and that only stood a chance if she could get far enough away first.

He attempts at thought had only distracted her from what was going on outside her head. When she returned to her senses the Kalona was up for another attack. A frightened whinny left her throat before she did her best to dodge the blow. It worked for the most part but she could feel something sharp cut into her right flank. The injured leg lifted itself from the ground without Amoena's permission and she nearly toppled over.

Limping away from the other, she tried to give herself some time to think. There was no way she'd be able to run now and the blood would certainly attract the kalona to her position if she tried to hide. She could play dead as her mother had but she highly doubted that would stop the black mare. She could fight.

Her eyes widened and her heart stopped for a moment. Fight? With a kalona? She couldn't even beat Ladius and she had been a normal soquili. Her heart was hammering in her throat. This wasn't going to be the end if she had anything to say about it. That meant fighting, though maybe it only meant enough to make the kalona uninterested. Beating the demon horse seemed a bit out of the question.

An insane malicious cackle elicited itself from Shade's throat and she threw back her head revealing in the scent of the blood. Once more the tip of her her silver horn was drenched in blood, which would only stain it further after she washed most of it away. She started weaving back and forth on her hooves as if she were slap drunk, which wasn't to far from the truth. The scents of fear and blood mingled in Shade's nostrils and rushed through her body like the two-leggers fire water.

Quickly the mare shook off her drunken stupor and moved forward again this time lowering her head and arching her back looking more and more like something out of a nightmare. Her tail lashed cutting deep into the bark of innocent trees and sending wood splinters everywhere. Her vulnerable leathery wings were folded down tight so they didn't attain to much damage in the struggle between herself and the lesser.

She started humming an eerie tune as she came closer and closer to the soft blue mare her mouth turning up more and more into it's psychotic grin. This mare didn't have all her marbles not by a long shot, but she was still a kalona and had been well trained in the art of battle.

The light mare was planning as she tried to block out the rather hypnotizing sight of the kalona before her. Before she could fight she needed to know what she would need to dodge. Everything from the looks of it. The way that serpent tail bit into trees was deadly and she'd already taken a blow from those horns to know they were the same. Her wings bore spikes around the connecting joints that looked like even a brush against them could mean death. Her hooves were cloven and sharp, were these creatures just designed to kill or something?

A wave of helplessness washed over her body and then a tune reached her ears. It was a haunting melody that sent chills to her very core. Scare tactics. These were all scare tactics and no matter how Amoena tried to tell herself this it still frightened her. There was a reason so many used these, because they worked. If one was scared clear thought was next to impossible.

Amoena tried to inhale to gather herself but a knot in her throat made her choke instead. The force of her coughing that followed sent her lunging forward almost as though she were charging. Her eyes widened as she came so much closer to the black mare. Then all thought left.

Her eyes glazed as instinct took over and she began to charge as fast as she could on three legs. Her head was bowed, she was aiming to headbutt the demon in the chest, the one area where protecting was limited. Yet at the same time it was the most heavily guarded place.

((sorry for the icky shortness xX))

Shade snorted in disgust when the mare charged, or seemed to charge, and it took her by surprise but she was really surprised when the mare really did attack. Shade let out a hiss and stepped back while the head collided with her chest, the sickening crack that echoed as the bone there cracked from the collision seemed to enrage Shade as much as the pain it caused.

Throwing back her head she roared before she reared thrashing the air with her hooves, just as suddenly she came back down attempting to knocked Amoena to the ground so that she could trample the lighter blue mare.

((tis fine, lengths don't matter so much to me anymore))
Something sinister smiled in Amoena at the sound of the bone cracking. The pain in her skull meant nothing nor did the pain that spread throughout her body as she was knocked to the ground. She rolled to the side deftly before staggering back to her feet. Crimson blood dripped from a fresh gash on her shoulder where a stick had pierced it. The pain. Oh the pain. Her leg, her shoulder, her body completely bruised and yet none of it mattered.

She was seeing red and it was clouding her mind. What was going on? It felt like her mind was disconnected from her body. She watched as the world changed once again as she lunged forward preparing to hit the mare in the exact way she had before. It didn't make any sense, that point would be well guarded now, and somehow the logical thought didn't stop her movement.

This was a matter of life and death. For Amoena to leave the mare would have to be defeated...or Amoena would have to leave her body. For as week as the sky blue mare had been feeling before she wasn't about to let herself be killed off. No matter what happened she would fight...she would live.

Shade threw back her head letting out a blood curdling laughter as the blue mare charged again. The kalona's body trembled in delight as the small of blood swam through her mind, but Shade wasn't going to let it end so easily, or quickly for that matter. She backed up then lashed out whipping her head around in hopes that her twin horns would collide with the side of Amoena's face.

Tossing her head again she started dancing back and forth "run run run little pet, but I'll find you. Watch your back as I will always be there ready to skin your your pretty hide from your body." Another insane cackle escaped Shade and she reared again batting at the air with her cloven hooves.

Suddenly she took off arching high into the air, oh it wasn't over, Shade would fly above her injured prey for awhile letting her think this was over when it had only just begun.

From the corner of her eye Amoena caught the movement from the Kalona. She did her best to overcome her body's will to move forward so that she could side step the attack.

It didn't work as well as she had hoped.

Half of her moved side ways while the other half continued its way forward. She lost her balance and hit the ground feeling something hit just below her ear on her way down. Run run run, the other was saying. She wished she could. If she could run she would be able to put up a half decent fight. She kept her eyes locked on the crazy demon horse as she pushed herself back onto three legs barely registering the fresh trail of blood that was making it's way down her face. As soon as she was up, though, the other mare had reared back and leapt into the sky.

Amoena was confused. She had landed a blow that hadn't been nearly enough to make the mare leave. Had she really just gotten sick of her prey fighting back? She tilted her head back as far as she could without hurting herself to look into the sky but could see nothing.

She was gone. Amoena was alive and the words that kalona had said before meant nothing to her now. There was no reason to watch her back now, none at all. Sure she was hurt but she had won, or so she thought. Feeling a bit of her old confidence returning she began to hobble away to find somewhere safe to rest until she healed.
