Personnaly I find the bible to be kinda sexist. It portrays women badly in most cases, its says that Eve commited the first sin, and this quote from it "Do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet." Is this just sexist or am I reading to deeply into that? It also states that women were made as "helpers" for men, and even says that women are to stay at home and take care of the children and submit to her husband. Also why were all of Jesus' deciples male?

Check the timeslot, hon.

the bible took place ages ago.
Women were basically property 100 years ago, now imagine in the biblical times?

"here 45 year old man, marry my 14 year old daughter, pay me in gold on please."

It was a horrible time for women.

Its what the bible says, and to be honest, I think the whole changing the bible to make it more suiting in this day and age, is a pretty bad thing. While I am all about equality, people are changing what they beleive is the word of their God. I feel something that sacred, shouldn't be changed.

You have to remember that the books of the bible were written by men. There are other sacred Chritistian books such as the gospel of Mary Magdalane and Thomas. Someone had to choose which books would be inlcuded in the bible and that was also a group of men at the council of Nycea. There are hundreds of other books. Just a factor that may change percpective on what you read.

I really disagree with the whole Bible's sexism as the cause for sexism in western society.

Really, it's much deeper than that, and the fact that the bible originated in the Middle East, then there you go.

Yeah, there is a lot of stuff in there that is antiquated, and doesn't apply well anymore.

But you have to look to see that there are a whole bunch of things in there that virtually no one takes seriously.

My favorite example:
It said something like, "He whose balls have been crushed shall not enter the kingdom of God."

And as for the reason why all Jesus's deciples were men. The people wouldn't have taken women seriously back then. Today, it would be fine for the most part, but back then, it'd be unheard of.
Remember, He had to give the people a lot of radical news, why make things harder on them?

Oh, and btw.
Eve turned out as the imperfect woman, as Adam turned out to be the imperfect man.

Mary was the one being who was complete in her humanity, and allowed into heaven, in her human form.

She's also the figurehead of the catholic church.
That's catholic with a lower case "C"

I was gonna use her as an example She was displayed as a whore but who ever have heard about the theory that she was Jesus' wife!!! Even though the Bible clearly displays sexist opinions I can't help but think 'be rational' the Bible was written about life over 2000 years ago (bearing in mind it was written about 200AD) life was different them sexism has only become over the last few hundred years so...we just have to deal, it demonstrates times are changing that we have noticed it & find a problem with it!!!

I believe the majority of the Bible is sexist. But most of what's written about how women should not excersise authority over men was written by men back in a time and place where that was just how it was. But not all the portrayals of women were bad. Jesus was first seen after He had risen by women. Mother Mary was never portrayed as a lesser figure, and now she's a religious icon. Ruth was important, she got her own book in the bible. I'm sure there's more but I haven't studied a good deal in the Bible yet.

The bible wasn't written at any given moment, it's a collection of several different books, written over vast spaces of time, and translated again and again.

And no, Mary Magdelene was never said to be a whore, that's just part of the story other people have added to it. People who actually read the bible would know that.

And Dan Brown seriously confused a whole lot of very impressionable people.

I have never read any part of the bible before, I dont think I'v even opened th book, the only things I know are from talking on religion forums and reading all the quotes they have of the bible, well its more debating/fighting because I'm an atheist.

its a very dangerous thing to quote the bible, because you're quoting several different people, with varying viewpoints.

that's why there's contradictions on things.

Unfortunatly, there was this outlook on women in biblical times. We don't however, have to change the bible just to update it to modern thinking. We only have to accept that this was the history and look back to it as a reference for the future. It should not be change because it is sacred. The bible doesn't ask us to continue to live as if it is the ancient days, but only that we use the Christian teachings.

Exactly. That's why I get so mad when people tell me my beliefs are outdated, just because we read from a b00k that has some outdated material.

Don't let people tell you your beliefs are outdated. What Christ taught was love and that is something this world needs alot of. Christians do not live in the past, but are merely trying to remember it for the future as do other nonchristians.

i don't believe that the bible itself is the root of sexism, but i realize that the bible displays sexism. it's also a resource for bible-thumping christians. i have a strongly christian friend who believes that women should stay at home and raise their children because the bible says that it should be so. she can quote the book on the subject. without having studied the bible, i can't really say anything back to that other than "times have changed".
