“Character is the final decision to reject whatever is demeaning to oneself or to others and with confidence and honesty choose what is right.”

-- UnKnown Author

Some people dream, while others act. This image purely describes the Fae of the Shadow Court. While few, even among the Fae are fully aware of the Shadow Courts populace or intentions, all have heard rumors. Members of the Shadow court view themselves as the only Free Fae in among those from the Old World as well as the New. Sometimes, it's difficult to work out what one wants in life. We want to see new places. Enjoy time with friends. Or, perhaps, pursue that one piece of knowledge that will make everything make sense.

However the confines of High Society have everyone always working within someone else's agenda. What about those who want to represent balance; respect their own freedoms, work with others, and protect those threatened by conformity? While rejecting both the Seelie and the UnSeelie beliefs, those who walk in the Shadows cannot spare themselves from the drama of the Fae. One can find both those of mixed breeding with purest millennia old bloodlines, arguing heatedly in darkened corridors.

The Shadow Court believes there need to be people willing to look beyond the confines of society - people who can find out what's going wrong... and help put it right. Fae society being what it is, breeds superiority, while those of the Shadow Court may be more likely to take a human as consort, they still see the futility and ignorance in the mortal populace. Freely forming cliques and amongst themselves they walk where they will.

Admittance to the Shadow Court for outsiders is extremely rare, as they have been credited with causing the rift between the Seelie and UnSeelie Courts. Upon entrance to the court, visitors must be prepared with valuable and unusual gifts though usually those gifts pass unseen into the inner recesses of the Dark Sithen. Suitable gifts include any item of power, or object not affected by the Fade.

The physical appearance of the Shadow Court, like the Seelie Court mirrors nature; silver maple trees and shimmering willows, strong and delicate, with high climbing wisteria reaching and tightly knotting to create a living ceiling, fill the empty throne hall. Golden light filteres from between the branches to caress a red marble floor. Light purple and red flowers gleam like lanterns amidst the treetops. Semi-precious jewels of garnets, citrine, and carnelian sparkle from arches of thick ivy lining the path to the throne. Bronze statues adorned with gems further attest to the wealth and beauty of the current ruler, whoever it may be... The throne itself, and one who sits on it, are the focal points of the room.

The throne of the Shadow Court is shaped like a large diamond dragon, as brilliantly lethal and beautiful as the Fae nobility.

Those of the Shadows find nothing compelling it the politics of the Seelie and UnSeelie Courts. The Shadow Court is comprised of adventurers, explorers, seekers of knowledge, and outcasts. People who don't feel the need to conform, but neither do they feel the need to tear down society. They're different, they know it, and they're going to make the most of it.

Both the Queen of Air and Darkness and the King of Light, hold court from ornately carved, dragon-shaped thrones. While not known to outsiders so too does the monarch of the Shadow Court. Commonly thought to be magical, the thrones' abilities are a matter of much speculation among the Courts. None but the nobles know the truth.

Both courts are matriarchal monarchies. Sometimes males endeavor to take the throne, but none have survived the Rites of Succession. Each prospective ruler undergoes a lengthy rite of passage. Not every candidate survives these secret tests and rituals. The heir undertakes the trial when the former queen dies or expresses a willingness to abdicate her throne. In the final Rite of Succession, the aspiring ruler ascends to sit on the throne. Sometimes a candidate dies at this point, rejected in some fashion by the throne. If the prospective ruler lives through this final ceremony, the court acknowledges them as its rightful ruler.

The Throne is in fact the rulers last line of defense, a magical body guard that lingers within the throne room lovingly bearing witness to the chosen monarchs activities.

Children are a precious thing to the Sidhe, and are rarer than human children, especially amongst the Royals. Even fertile couples have to try quite a while to conceive, and sometimes never do. Anything, regardless of species, that can breed is worth keeping alive. The possibility of a child, or a fertile pair, can keep a Sidhe alive even if they have angered the King or Queen of their court.

For this reason Sidhe do not marry for love. Only fertile couples marry, regardless of their feelings for one another. Many couples have been trapped in marriage after one night of passion. A Fae version of divorce can be granted, but only if both parties agree. For the lesser Fae or lesser Sidhe, marriage is an opportunity, a way of becoming apart of a Court. Their husband has to treat them like wife or not touch them at all. Marriage by force is not recognized by Sidhe. Adultery is considered a crime, and those in a marriage may not seek pleasure else where - even the King or Queen must abide by this rule.

All Fae gain comfort from touch and sex between friends for comfort is not unusual. Casual sex, rough sex and Dominance & submission is frowned upon in the Seelie Court, but is very common in the UnSeelie Court. Among the Shadow Court, nothing is casual. Sex with humans is illegal if the human is under 18 years of age, and if the Sidhe does not protect the humans mind. Otherwise they become elf-struck, and obsessed with the feel of Sidhe flesh.

Duels & Fighting

Anyone can challenge another to a duel. Only the King or Queen can refuse to let a duel take place, usually to protect themselves or their children. The Royals are too precious to risk being lost in a duel. It is also unwise to risk displeasing the ruler by challenging their child, because you never knew how they would react if you killed their child. The challenged Fae gets to choose to method of fighting, whether it be magic, by a weapon or physical combat. See here for the full ritual details for a duel. The Shadow Court does not approve of such conflicts.

Using magic to best someone in a fight is considering cheating, less than chivalrous and makes the Sidhe look weak.

Weapons of Power

Many of the older Sidhe have weapons of power, magical items that have certain abilities. There are also relics and items of power amongst the Sidhe as well, that do the same thing.

Lying

Sidhe do not lie. They bend the truth, they avoid saying the truth or they use pretty words to cover the truth. They never outright lie, they just omit the truth. To lie is to be fore sworn and the punishment is banishment from faerie. Despite their nature, the Seelie Court and it's illusions are more likely to deceive than the UnSeelie Court. The UnSeelie Court is more truthful and honest, not trying to pretend to be something it is not.

Power

To be named 'Lord/Lady of' something meant that he/she has power over it i.e. Lord of the Dead has power over the dead. Many Sidhe who lost their power changed their names, no longer going by their name when they were gods or in full power.

Other bits & pieces

Sidhe do not keep track of time. They are so old that birthdays mean nothing to them and they only have a vague idea of their age, usually due to events in the past. They cannot remember their birth dates.

Blood is a precious fluid for the Fae and not to be wasted. It can be used to make alliances, especially in the UnSeelie Court.

Sidhe do have a type of religion, despite being worshiped as gods once. They believe in the Goddess (the giver of life) and the Consort (everything that is male).

To be seen crying out due to pain is a weakness among the Sidhe.
