Er, a little pronounciation problem... help?

So, I jsut bought a vocabulary book for school, and it has the word 'elation,' in it.

They have the pronounciation being “ī lā’shən”*, which makes it sound like "eye-lay-shun."

Now, I was wondering, shouldn't it be “ē lā’shən?”** to make it sound ee-lay-shun?

I have only heard the word pronounced ee-lay-shun before, not eye-lay-shun. I guess it is really matter of how the particular person wishes to pronounce the word.

Probably more a typographical mistake than anything else.

... I think I say it more "eh-lay-shun." It probably depends partly on where you live. I think the "eh" might be because I like in the midwest US, kind of like how I say "worsh" instead of "wash."
Please don't kill me because I say "worsh."
