Me and my friend Mike were discussing alien life forms. While we were both in agreement that extraterrestrial life forms in all likelyhood do exist we differed about what would happen if physical contact were established.

I for one believe that if any alien life form did come in contact with Earth such creature would probably be attacked by the different bacteria and viruses residing on our planet. Another point, our atmosphere is not very hospitable. Most people don't know this but we are on average only breathing about 2 or 3% oxygen. Oxygen is toxic, any creature that has not had exposure to about the same level of oxygen and other elements found in our atmosphere would most likely asphyxiate and die.

and the religious far right calling them demons from the pits of hell.

now hold on just a minute why do you think it would be only the far right calling them demons from the pits of hell?

Actually, I think most (well, basically all) religions would find themselves in a fix, if we were ever to make contact with E.T. life.

Like, Christians, Catholics, Lutherans (looping them all together, even if they have their differences) have that beliefe that humans were created by God, and we're the only things in the whole entire Universe. Finding other life would be a complete contradiction to thousands of years of worship.

I myself am semi-Christian. More like lazy, but I've got my beliefs. It is physically impossible, when referring to the -unlimited-, vast, Universe, that we're the -only- living thing out there. That makes little to no sense.

Don't get me wrong, though; I don't believe in the Grey Man Martian that everyone seems to think aliens look like (and for all we know, they could acutally look like that) but there has to be -something- out there, y'know?

I am a Lutheran, so I better stick my beliefs out there. I have never heard from my church (which I attend weekly) that only humans were created by God. Never. We were taught the allegorical story of Adam and Eve, but that's as far as I have ever heard upon the subject (back in sunday school, during sermons, or in the ELCA newsletter(s)) As for my personal beliefs, I don't actually care enough to have an opinion one way or another. If aliens come to the planet, this is good, as long as all said species can communicate peacefully with one another.

PS. Lutherans are a type of Protestant Christian. Catholics are a type of Christian, even if they deny it. Saying Christians, Catholics, and Lutherans is redundant.

I'm well aware of that. I was just trying to be polite to an extent.

However, we're getting off topic.

The reason I said what I said was because the fundamentalist christians are quick to condemn any piece of thought that doesn't agree with their own ideologies as "heretical", "satanic", "unnatural" or "evil".

But the psychological studies that have been done have shown that the most likely response to our forst serious extraterrestrial contact, as humans, would be panic and mass hysteria.
