Yeah, i've tried it a couple of times, only to find that I really have a shitload of stuff running through my head. I found it almost impossible to just stop and concentrate. So like I do with anything I never get right at first, I just quit doing it. Now I plan to start up again, knowing that I have to be patient. The thing is I just don't get what is to be achieved from meditation?
Is it just as simple as obtaining a peaceful mind and not a cluttered one? One of my friends who meditates daily, probably for hours, says he gets revelations of sorts. Like for instance, one day he said he was on the verge of something, but just came out of his state of mind before he could figure how what it was. Was it like a premonition, something to come? I never really understood meditation.
From the little time that I did meditate I found it gave me just a peaceful train of thought for maybe an hour or so. But that was usually all I got, no revelation or anything, which is understandable, considering I am a nub at all of this and I usually only did it for 20 minutes or so.
My problem is I just find myself freaking out almost, even getting a little excited. It's like I want something to happen, so my heart starts beating so fast with excitment thinking something cool is going to happen like a vision or a revelation of sorts. From what i've found out so far breathing deeply helps alot. Anyway, I just wanted to know what you all get from it. Peace of mind, revelations, visions? What does it do for you?
Please be serious about this. None of that "OH I SEE MY DESTINEE BE4 ME AND HOW I WILL SAV DE WRLD YA"

I'm fairly new to it, too, but maybe I can offer some tips that work for me?
I recommend sitting in a chair or cross legged on the floor, so you're less inclined to fall asleep. Taking deep, slow breaths can also help you relax. Don't directly think about anything, and your thoughts will fade. Listen to some soft music, if that helps.

Meditation is best when you practice it often, like most worthwhile pursuits. When I meditate, it gives me a feeling of calm and peace. If you do it right, it's like sleeping or a vacation. You develop a greater reserve and can roll with the punches better.
I wouldn't know anything about the revelations and such, but I know how Buddhism goes so I know if you do it right you can get that stuff. But if you try to go after it you won't get it, so it's complicated.
But, yeah, just keep trying. Do 20 minutes each day and I promise it will do things you never thought you could do.

A sense of peace, a feeling of oneness with the Universe, physical benefits like relaxation and lowered blood pressure, spiritual peace.
Sometimes the colors behind the eyelids are cool to watch too.
And as far as "What can I achieve with meditation?" goes, it really depends on what kind of meditation you're doing. Zen Buddhist meditation will have slightly different benefits from Daoist Nei Dan Qigong meditation or New Age meditations.

I sat down and listened to some binaural beats. The one I listened to puts you into an alpha mindset or something, useful for beginner meditation. Afterlike 20 minutes I was done, I did have a sense of peace, but I also got a horrible headache that is still with me stressed

Edit: Sorry, this is a long one.
I'm glad this was brought up. Here's my take.
I think we often sit down to meditate (and sometimes even to do rituals)without a real purpose and after it's over we aren't really sure why the heck we bothered. (Don't worry, I'm often guilty of this too).
I have a rather boring book* about the difference between concentration (dharana) and meditation/contemplation (dhyana) and I tend to think of a sitting as focused one of those two things. Unfortunately in order to do the latter you have to be decent at concentration.
When the whole point of the sitting is to empty your mind as much as possible or to hyper-focus on something, counting breaths, a shape, color or most visualizations, this is working on your ability to concentrate. The whole point of this is to be able to concentrate and control your will, perhaps even move your consciousness on any point within or outside of yourself (or both!) Besides the other benefits mentioned this will also be good for the practices we're talking about here. For example, how the heck can you try to create an energy construct if you can't stay focused on something for the length of time it would take to build it?
Then we have meditation which is kind of hard to describe. This is where the insight and revelations may happen. Contemplating is going beyond observing the supposed existance and experiencing the object or idea in a way that could lead to higher understanding...that's a horrible definition but it's the only one I could come up with.
Examples: Close your eyes and concentrate on the color blue. Can you see it clearly, the color firm and consistent? Now, what feelings do you get from blue? What correspondances go along with it, a direction, a god or image. What does this respresent? Can you pull your awareness so close that you can try to see the world through this image, be this thing linked to blue? That's a little closer to meditation. (don't forget to try to trace your thoughts back the way you came, it aids memory and keeps you from accidentally aspecting the color blue or something!)
Whether some understanding comes during the session or afterwards even in dreams, could you see why people would receive guidance or insight during a well-purposed meditation? You have to get something out of studying something that deeply. Quality is what's important, the amount of time spent will vary based on what you want to accomplish.

My general form of meditation has evolved into this: Sit/lay down in the dark/semi-dark, better if it is in a quiet place. Close eyes (gently, don't squeeze them shut). Breath in and out deeply and gently. Focus on the feeling of air entering and leaving the nose, and slowly shift it back into the throat.
Then shift farther back, into the upper (central) chest. Then try to feel the diaphragm. Try to individually feel each of the major muscle groups, ending with the heart itself. Try to slow down the heart, bit by bit. Focus on the feeling of your heartbeat, and try bringing it into the rhythm of your breathing.
Shift back to feeling how breathing... feels... in your chest, and move back out to the nose. (option of then focusing on what you hear, or on what you see w/ eyes closed).
And there you have my meditation method in a nutshell. It implies that you are forcing all thoughts from your mind by focusing on physical sensations. Phrase them mentally, if it helps block other things out. After knowing what you are feeling, then feel free to concentrate on an idea, instead of a thing/sense.
EDIT: don't worry about falling asleep. It means you needed the rest, and will probably feel better for it.

Meditation is something you teach yourself, in my opinion. My guides kinda just help you learn how to get into a meditative state of mind.
And NEVER expect something to happen. EVER. If you expect something to happen it will NEVER happen. One of my favorite quotes comes from Jackie Chan and it is "Expect the worse and hope for the best."

You won't have eyes tonight. You won't have ears or a tongue; you will wander the underworld blind, deaf and dumb... I suggest listening to this while you meditate:
