What makes a bad POTO fic? Is it the Mary Sues? The weird time settings? Reincarnated Christine (or Christine's child) pairing up with Erik? Or just the plain E/C ones?

This thread can also help fanfic writers who want to know what kind of content the readers like. It's main purpose is NOT to bash any author's work, but more so on what to avoid, and to inspire many new ideas (for current or upcoming writers).

I personally hate the ones where Erik is a vampire or ones where a bunch of fangirls decide to go back in time to either bother Erik, or somehow make him fall in love with them. Polygamy, anyone?

I think the worst fanfics (factor) are the ones where Raoul suddenly becomes an abusive drunk as soon as he marries Christine. That and the ones where Erik tries to get with Christine, but he actually has a(n evil) past lover who comes back and sabotages it.

Bra shopping? Dear God, I hate those humor fics. They're always so OOC.

I hate the Mary Sue OC fics about as much as the Abusive!Raoul ones. I read one that had an OC who was 30, and was working at the Opera House to escape her abusive husband, and was working as a seamstress. For no reason at all, Erik began harassing her, making her patch his cloak and stuff.

Another one I read combined the drunk Raoul and the other lover of Erik's. Christine runs back to Erik, but the other lover was a prostitute Erik kept after the original story, just to vent his "sexual frustrations." So the lover gets turned out on the street for Christine, and she concocted this plan and lures Christine away, kills her husband, and tries to kill her, and ends up killing Erik instead. rolleyes

Wife-beater Raouls, most Mary/Gary Sues, and extreme OOCness ruin any potential goodness in a phanfic.
