With a deep frown fixed upon his face, Zizima sat gazing out at the sea. Mzimu was resting in a nearby cave, unaware of what the moody half-Firekin was going through. Why couldn't he bring himself to leave this old geezer who was making his life more annoying than usual? Like Mzimu kept saying, he had gone his whole life without any help, so he didn't need it now. Zizima just found that a little too difficult to accept, and although he liked to think he had no conscience, clearly that was what was stopping him from leaving.

Frustrated, he shifted uncomfortably on the sand, wondering what to do.

As always, Isilahi stayed as inland as possible in regards to water. She both loved and hated it, and was sometimes totally dumbfounded how Mzimu could be brave enough to shelter in a cave. A cave on a beach no less!

She woke with the warmth of the morning sun and stretched, admittedly always fond of the breeze and coolness that often accompanied water. She made her way idly over to the high vantage point of her sleeping spot and gazed down along the stretch of coast. Mzimu was nowhere to be seen, but another figure was.

"Well...I wonder what got grumpy-features up so early?" she asked herself, smirking at the nickname she had given him.

Not one to restrain youthful curiosity, she bounded down and onto the sand, never prepared for its different surface tension. She slipped and wobbled a bit, losing some of her grace.

"Morning," she called out.

Zizima blinked out of his train of thought as Isilahi came running up. His frown deepened slightly, as it always tended to do whenever she was around. She had a gift for getting under Zizima's skin, and he didn't like it one bit.

"Morning." He murmered in reply, his gaze remaining fixed on the sea. He wondered if Isilahi would be willing to look after Mzimu, should he decide to leave. But then, would that be fair to Isilahi? Zizima glanced to his side as he waiting for the teal female to join him, as he was sure she would.

Yeeep, grumpy-features was a good nickname she thought as she just caught that frown on his harsh face. Of course, being the bane of his good mood made her all the more determined to pester him.

"Why you up so early?" she asked him bluntly as she sat herself by his side. "And why alone?"

She was making reference to Mzimu at this point, who despite claiming he was fine on his own, did seem to have a fondness for the irritable male.

"No reason." He replied, just as bluntly as Isilahi had asked. He would've said it was none of her business, but then again, it kind of was. Zizima wasn't one to unload is problems on anyone else though. It wasn't long before his eyes once again returned to the sea. Perhaps if he ignored her, she would go away.

Not a chance. Knowing full well who he was dealing with, he got up from where he was sat and started walking down the beach. He breifly motioned for Isilahi to join him, although he wouldn't have been too bothered if she declined.

Despite her own blunt approach with Zizima, she seemed mildly offended that he should return the same attitude. She wrinkled her nose a bit and pouted, but didn't have any intention of letting him see, so she regained some composure and wouldn't be beat.

"So you're up early for the sake of your health? Your sanity?" she kept probing, like a dog with a bone.

Zizima rolled his eyes. "Had I been considering my sanity this morning, I would've gone back to sleep." Although that sort of implied for Isilahi to leave him alone, he didn't really mean it to.

After the brief silence that followed, the grumpy grey and white lion looked at Isilahi through the corner of his eye. "Do you believe Mzimu when he says that he wishes to be left alone?" It was rare for Zizima to ask the opinion of anyone else, has he tended to hold his own views and opinions in high regard. In Mzimu's case though, he was simply unsure.

Isilahi was just thinking of some witty retort when he appeared to change direction of the conversation entirely. She wasn't quite prepared for it, in all truth, and looked a little stumped. Even as they were walking, she cast a glance back over her shoulder toward the cave where Mzimu slept.

"I...I don't rightly know. If its not his age thats making him stubborn, then its something else. Maybe he's...just used to being alone..." she mused out loud to Zizima, a slight sad tone in her voice.

She knew a similar pain, that of being alone in the world, having lost something so very dear. It occurred to ehr then that she didn't really know who Mzimu was - where he came from, how he got here, etc.

(( Sorry for the wait luff. XP; The most recent Gaia update killed my will to RP. ))

"Being alone has its advantages I'll admit." Zizima knew this, having spent half of his life almost completely alone. He had never sought out the company of others, as he had never really yearned for it. In fact, the time he had spent with Mzimu and Isilahi was the longest he had spent with anyone since when he was a cub. "But I know I'd hate it if I believed others were patronising me in my old age, thinking that I'm no longer capable of looking after myself."

As Isilahi glanced back, he did the same. "I just don't know what to do." He frowned, hating the fact that he didn't have all the answers for once, and even more so the fact that he cared about that grumpy old lion. In some ways, he and Mzimu were a lot alike. Stubborn, not able to show their emotions easily, and proud in the sense that both believed they could get along just fine on their own.

This is where Isilahi differed from Zizima. She couldn't actually think of any advantages to being alone. As strong as her fear of ever losing a loved one again was, she wanted to love again. But her haunted past just seemed to isolate her. Seemed to drive her to the furthermost parts of this world where no one else lived. Except this time.

She looked at him, confused for a moment, troubled as always by the inconsistencies of males. One moment, he was grumpy, the next he was concerned, then next after he was all proud and arrogant. Can't they make their mind up?

"I don't think it helps that he's blind. I can only imagine how many lions have thought he was some weak old codger, only to see differently..." she said with a slight blush, recalling her own first meeting with Mzimu.

"What troubles you? Do you want to stay with him?"

Zizima shrugged his broad shoulders. "I don't know, that's why I'm asking you." He shook his head heavily. "I'm not sure if he really means it when he tells us he wants to be left alone. If I was sure of that, then I would leave." The grey lion wasn't even sure why he was unsure if Mzimu meant what he said. He knew in himself that sometimes he didn't mean it when he said or implied that he wished to be left alone, so perhaps Mzimu was the same?

Soon after, Zizima came to a stop and turned to Isilahi. "I've seen him catch fish, I know he can do it. But he's not getting any younger, and the fish will simply become better at evading him. Then what?" An intently serious look was on his face. If he didn't have all the answers, he could at least get the opinion of the only lioness who's opinion he gave some value too. Sure, Isil could be a bit of a pain sometimes, but he could tell she had a good head on her shoulders.

Isil wasn't expecting him to stop and she walked for a few paces until she realised he'd stopped. She was busy thinking about what Zizima had said.

"Well...what about...being a bit sneaky...he's obviously grumpy if you say anything about helping him...so what about staying with him for company?" she mused out loud, half talking to herself, half addressing Zizima.

"If he thinks you're staying because...you want to rather than HAVE to...maybe thats a way to keep an eye on him without actually making him grumpy."

Zizima raised a brow. Did he even want to stay here? He had always been a wanderer, travelling from one end of the coast to the other, and sometimes even heading in-land. The idea of being tired down to one place, no matter what the reason, didn't sit well with him at all.

"What about you then? Are you planning on sticking around too?" It occured to him that Isilahi had hung around ever since meeting Mzimu, just like he had done. If she was planning on leaving at some point, he would have no choice but to stay. Again, this didn't sit well with him.

"Me? Well, I'll never be able to stay this close...because...of the water...I'll probably wander for a while in-land, feel the grasses again, then come back occasionally," she said in a very non-challant way.

She did have an affection for the old-timer, like he was a grandfather in her life, and it saddened her to think about leaving, but she shouldn't form attachments. Not when the reality of losing someone was so heavy on her heart already.

Zizima blinked and looked at the water, as if Isilahi had just said something that he couldn't compute. "The water? What about it?" He frowned and looked back to the teal female, only now realising that Isilahi did indeed tend to avoid the water.

Zizima had always been just as comfortable in the sea as he was on land, if not more so, so he couldn't think of any valid reason why Isilahi would have a problem with it. "You're not scared of it are you?" He said with an almost bemused look on his face. Because he wasn't scared of anything, he often looked down somewhat on those that were, and this ever-pleasant female was no exception.
