Its been some time since Sarah ran the Labyrinth, years since last she set foot in that chaotic place known as the underground. Over the years, she has forgotten much about the place and the people that live there. The only time she even calls for those friends she remembers is when she has a serious need for someone to talk to help sort out her problems. Everything seems to have passed her by, but then something dark and powerful starts attacking her first in dreams then in reality, and she is forced to call upon the one creature she swore never to summon again.

"You have no power over me."

Those words changed her life forever, in more ways than one. She'd been through a world so confusing and different from hers that everything she did seemed as though it was the wrong thing. She had met some amazing people, both good and evil, and managed to save Toby in the process. Still, it had taken quiet a bit from her to refuse Jareth like she did. He was the first person to really show any sort of attention to her like that, and it had been almost impossible to leave.

She missed her friends, wondering about them and talking to the mirror as if they would once again appear for her if she called them. Of course, she barely called to them any longer, but it was still comforting to know they'd come if she called.

Sarah had changed alot since her trip to the Labyrinth. Her hair, once dead straight and lanky, had smoothed out into a foamy mass of black waves, trialing down her back freely unless she was at play practice. She was also participating in most of the school's plays, even appliying to go on to get a college degree in theatre. Still, all things considered, she was beginning to enjoy her life.

Sarah was beautiful now. Had become a beautiful woman, blossomed with age. And an age it had been. It seemed like eons since the last time Jareth had seen her, and he didnt know why recenlty he had begun turning her in his crystal more and more, watching her human life from afar. It was all so strange to him. Sarah intrested him more now than she ever had as a child, yet she spent half her life pretending to be other people. Sometimes he wished he had the ability to do the same. To be someone other than himself. His kingdom was falling apart around him as he became more and more introverted. He could not see the distruction his depression caused. Storm clouds constantly gathered over the Labyrinth, reflected his thundering moods.
He was not aware that his state of mind was caused by lonliness, he had never needed anyone else, or of seperation, he had always been content being the only almost-human in a kingdom full of monsters. He often now wondered if it were he who was the monster. Toby had supposed to have been his son, his protage, someone to teach and mould into his own image, and though he himself had grown no older, Jareth was beginning to feel once again that he needed someone to carry his legacy. He could not bare its weight by himself for much longer.

Sarah moved across her room at an easy pace, softly humming a half forgotten song from the underground. Actually, it was the only song she'd been sure Jareth had been singing for her, and it was stuck in her head. Her long black hair moved around her slender form as she moved.

It wasn't often that she thought about the exotic Goblin King or any of his people, even the ones she called friends still. She doubted they had changed, doubted he had changed. Such a selfish, almost cruel creature would never change. Still, she acknowledged that she had acted carelessly where he was concerned. He had come very close to admitting some form of affection towards her, though she wasn't completly sure that he was being honest with her.

She suddenly felt as if there were eyes on her, and turned completly around in her room, her voice dying out with the barest ending of the notes from that song she'd been humming all day. It was the strangest feeling, like someone was watching her from afar, and still close enough for her to nearly feel their precense.

Hearing her voice map out that simple tune that he had casted a spell over her with so many years ago was like hearing angels sing. Like revalations and resonance that echoed in his head and in his heart. He could not stop himself from leaning closer in towards the crystal ball so gently cupped in his harshly leathered hands. His haunting eyes seeming to glow, cat-like, as his brows drew into a 'v' of confusion and he strained his ears to hear her. Lengths of blonde hair fell forward over his shoulders to brush against her image, and in that moment, the moment it seemed when some part of him unwittingly reached out to touch her-
her song failed. Died on her lips like a ship lost at sea, trailing off without purpose and he felt like the song died too, for moments that lasted eternities he could not remember himself what the words to that unrelenting melody had been. Then he saw it. That look, her eyes the colour of whisky and dark chocolate in poisionus mixes that seemed to capture moonlight where ever and when ever she was.

"theres such a sad love, deep in your eyes..."

He wished for the thousanth time that that love had been for him. He had offered her everything and still she had spurned him, and he could not understand why. For a child she claimed to hate. A boy who now, was a young man, who could have been so much more.

It that moment, he felt cheated himself, that she had dared to let those notes enter her world when she had rejected them so. Before his mind had time to catch up with his body, the crystal was shattering. Shards seemed to ring in high pitched chimes over the floor, scattering into oblivion.

Sarah felt a chill down her spine, something that was both familiar and altogether foriegn to her mind. There had been someone watching her, she could feel it now. Likely, it was Jareth again, he always watched her, always paid her the most attention. She didn't know why, when there were so many people in the world that would simply fall to his attentions, that she was the one that he obsessed over like this.

"You listen for words yet unspoken, and in that silence, you find your sorrow compounded." She said aloud, quoting something from the play she was writing for her drama class. The winning writer would get to put on that play at the end of the year. She'd chosen to do a rendition of the Labyrinth, adding two things to it that hadn't happened in the original adventure. One, was a monolouge for the main heroine at the end of the play. Another one....well she thought about writing a song that would play at the end and beginning of the tale, something to set the mood.

"Jareth....Jareth..." She said his name softly, like a prayer almost. "Must you obsess so, when so many would welcome your love more openly than I?"

His anger broke with his crystal, so far his moods had scattered between melancholy and desperation and depression, now there was only malice.
He stood quickly, crossing the room to crunch the last shards of spellbound glass under his patent boots, the sound grinding into him as much as if he had dug the crystal into his own flesh. His face was contorted into a picture of hurt and rage, what is it he could achive here? He had no companion, no love, no hier. His kingdom was failing under the weight of his mood and he could still hear Sarah mocking him in his mind. The strains of that song bouncing in his skull and as he dropped his head in silence, allowed his body to still, thought he heard her speak his name.

A shiver ran thorugh him, and he asked himself again why it was he couldnt just find another human to toy with, another girl or boy to make his own, to lavish gifts on to find religion in.
Because he wasnted what he could not have, because when she had defeated him, Sarah had proved herself his equal, had proved herself more worthy of his love than he had thought. Why would those he wanted only stay as a prisoner? There had been more than one human to pass through the Labyrinth, those who did not reach the goblin castle were not worth bothering with. He had left so many potentials in oubliettes, had seen so many perish, had let his heart turn colder with each one. For, he had loved them all in his own way. They could not prove themselves. For those that had, they only hated him.
He had no other means of device. He was chosen this way, had loved his maker, why wouldnt they?

She finally started pacing her room again, reciting her lines over and over again as she tried to put her thoughts in order. The lines were wrong, things mixing in from the Labyrinth. She still had that blasted book, read it almost religiously every chance she had. Still, so much time had passed for her and she knew that sooner or later she would have to give up on happily ever after.

"You have no power over me...." She murmured, remembering that time at the castle, in the room where the world had become fractured with the wills of its master. He had said such things to her, but in the end she had turned him down flat, figuring it to be another of his tricks. She'd come so far, had done so much, and wasn't willing to be turned back now.

Words formed in her mind, words that she'd been thinking at that time and never spoken. They were cultured now, of course, being that her fifteen-year-old self hadn't been nearly as articulant as she was now. "But that you only showed that side of you that was so cruel, I believe....I wish..." She stopped herself there, hand planted over her mouth as her mind finished that which she would never speak aloud.

'I wish....that I could see you again, just once more.'

Jareth was leaning, body riged, one hand against the cold stone wall, holding himself up, as his free hand raised to his head, slender fingers pincing the bridge of his nose, face set in stone also, teetering between anger and forlourn. His jaw twitched a little, and it took all his self dicipline to stop himself starting as one of his minions ran in. It was Florg, a waist height goblin with evergreen skin and piercing blue eyes, his features were more pixi like than goblin and his cheeks always had a slight high flush. Jareth had found him beautiful when he had been made.

"master, master!" he almost cried as he skidded to a hault bowing lowly, clawed hands pressed into the floor.

"did I not instuct the whole kingdom that I should not be disturbed?" he asked increduoiusly, almost screaming at the trembling creature. Jareth's eyes were burning, his hair and cloak flaring as he whipped around to face the thing.
Florg blanced and covered his head. Bowing lower "please master, she's feigning wishes again!"

He didnt need to ask what Florg meant, didnt need to ask who or why, didnt need even to dismiss the goblin as he turned to the window at a run, jumping the threshhold as he did so.

The shadow across the sky was darker than the storm clouds and was morphing before any onlooker could focus on that streak, great wings changing from the flapping cloak, and evenutally white feathers from blonde hair. By the time Jareth reached the edge of the labyrinth there was nothing of the forboding goblin king, only a small barn owl, streaking white across the sooted heavens.

"I didn't say it, I didn't say it." She chanted to herself, praying that the wishes asked of the Goblin King didn't count if they were finished in thought and not word. She'd said those two words, but hadn't finished the wish, and many people did this, a wish dying on their lips as they realized how silly it sounded.

Sarah was very distraunt at her own thoughts. Would she really be glad to see him if he were to come to her now? Would he even have bothered if she had spoken the wish aloud? It was a wonder sometimes, that he even still paid her any mind.

She knew where this one had come from. She was feeling lonely again, out of focus with the world and the people around her. She longed again for adventure, for the romantisism and chaos of the world of the Laybrinth, though she knew she could never return.

"I need advice." She said softly to her mirror, wondering if any of her friends had the time today to speak with her. She knew from Sir Diddymus that the labyrinth was falling apart around them, and that few had time to answer her summons any longer.

Jareth knew full well that he could not act unless she voiced her wishes clearly, but if that happened then he would be close by, he would be forcing the words from her petal like lips. Obsession was a dangerous thing.

Meanwhile in Sarah's room something was happening that much of the human population of this earth would not have belived possible, would have told her just a few years ago that it was imagination and dreamscape.

The mirror frosted for a moment, and for the longest time, it looked just like that, a mirror, nothing more. It was only in the dying breaths of the spell that Hoggle's sweating face popped up upon the glass.
"Sarah!" exclaimed the goblin, who for all his wrinkled features, managed to look older, and there was a tiredness and alarm in his eyes.
"What do you want?" he asked, though not unkindly.

It was a conversation that was a danger to them both, especially when much of the night sky on earth was streaked across by a white winged form.

"Hoggle!" Sarah greeted, truly happy to see her friend. "I need some advice, Hoggle." She paused again, trying to decide the best way to put her words. "I....I'm feeling out of sorts again, like I did before I ran the Labyrinth. I feel disconnected from my family, even though my life has been very good since I rescued Toby. I feel....almost lonely I guess, like some part of me has been taken away and hidden in a place I neither know about nor can reach."

She paced in front of the mirror, able to feel the bare edges of power that she knew familiarly. Jareth was on the hunt again, probably searching for some idiotic mortal to wish away their sibling or child.

((sorry its been so long))

"Sarah!" Hoggle emniated a little shocked, usually the girl was so happy when she came to see him, yes it was in times of crisis or regret, but there was always a path for her to take, she did seem lost now. So did they all.
He knew why she felt so strange, why she felt out of sorts and lost.

"Its because a part of you is here"

he admitted softly, glancing around him and edging closer to the mirror to speak in hushed tones.

"its falling apart" he said, knowing he wasnt making much sense.

"Jareth is getting worse, I've never seen him like this, and I dont want to see him any worse" after all this time, the hob-goblin was still afraid of his King.

Perching on a swaying branch of a blossom tree, outside of the window of a young actor, sat a barn owl, white as snow in the gathering dusk. A barn owl that noted silently to punish a cirten hob-goblin Prince.

((Its okay really! How are you doing at University?))

Sarah felt a cold brush of power along her spine, but ignored it for the time being, focusing on her long time friend as she tried to make sense out of his words. "What do you mean, a peice of me is in the Underground? Hoggle, the only thing I left in the Labyrinth was my mother's ring, and I don't think that is what you mean."

She had no idea just how many of her gestures were beginning to show signs of Jareth's. Sir Diddymus had commented on this before, but she never gave it much thought. She paced as one caged, her body moving in graceful though fitfull paths.

"If the Labyrinth is falling apart, then it is Jareth's problem, not mine. He is the king there, it is his responsibitly to see to the well being of his people." She knew she sounded spiteful and stopped herself, rethinking her words. "Alright, so I don't know the first thing about what your King has to do to keep everyone safe and happy. I bet its harder than anything I've ever tried, but still..."
PostPosted: Thu Oct 25, 2007 4:23 pm

"Sarah, you're the only one to have made it out! Do you know how many people he's kept in oubliettes? I've seen it all, everyone he claimed to love and you're the only one that proved worth loving...d'you see?.....not that anyone can help loving you" he added the last line softly, seeming to loose his track before quickly taking a new one.

"You've seen it, everything here, part of you must crave that adventure. You wouldnt be calling on us otherwise..."

he sighed noisily

"if you want my advice, then forget about the Labyrinth. Its not worth it anymore."

He looked desperatly to the side, and wildly back to the mirror

"one more thing, look after Toby"

with that the image fluttered and failed, and in the treetops the owl stayed silent, contemplating, huge glowing eyes swivling to other lit windows of the house. How could he have forgotten about the baby?

Sarah stood there thinking for the longest time, glad that Toby wasn't home tonight. Her stepmother had taken him to visit with her parents for the night, so he wouldn't be back until late tommorow afternoon. She was glad for this, since she could feel Jareth nearby now.

"Forget the Labyrinth? Oh Hoggle, don't you think I've tried. To forget the greatest adventure of my life would mean forgetting all the friends I made. I just don't think I could do that, no matter how little I tend to call now." Her eyes grew large in her face then, as realization sunk in. "Was I starting to forget? Is that why I'm not calling as often?"

She started pacing again, not stopping her sharp circuit even when she heard the sound of flapping wings outside her window. "To forget them all...why would I? And now I once again find myself longing for that adventure, that sense that I'm more than just a silly little girl with stupid dreams."

There was no spectacle this time, no flutter and tap at the windows and swirls of glitter and wind and dramatics. He was behind her, fully formed, human or at least, he looked it. His hands were encased in soft blue leather gloves that extended to his elbow, delicate engraved silver tumbnails were set into the leather, and he made sure to dig them only very gently into her shoulders as he curled his hands around those pale forms.
He was dressed as elaboratly as usual, but there was no mirth to his fashion, no love and care, his velvetine briches were worn at the knees, his poet's shirt ripped across one side of his chest, his cloak worn and weather beaten, moonlight shining through it in some ghostly portent.

"No dreams are stupid Sarah, only those who dream them"

his voice was as low and smooth as ever, rolling from his tounge like poison.

Sarah let out a sound that was somewhere between a yelp and a scream, pulling herself free of the man's grasp and turning around to face him. "You, you can't be here!" She shouted, backing away until she had enough distance between them that her heart was pounding in her ears. She took in his appearance semi-calmly, her eyes growing wider the longer she looked him over. "What happened to you?" She asked, her compassionate heart overriding her normal dislike for this man.

She wanted to say the words, wanted to banish him back to the Labyrinth where he belonged, but she remembered Hoggle's words. The Labyrinth was falling about, its king was not entirely of his right mind. What had she done? Sarah managed a faint smile, deciding that she needed to play it safe until she knew what he was there for. She hadn't said the words earlier, simply thought them, but 'I wish' had come out of her mouth before she'd stopped herself. "You look like crap."
