Ok...I wanted to know when is Ullambana (Uranbon-e)...basically it is Obon in Japanese. Ullambana is the Sanskrit word. I was wondering because some places in Japan celebrate it on July...and others on August...howcome? In a Buddhist forum where I went to (not on Gaia), it said it is on August 15 - August 16...and other places in Japan, celebrate it on July. In case if some of you dont know what Obon is it is: e-sangha A day of commemorating Sakyamuni Buddha's disciple Maudgalyana making offerings to the Sangha for the release of his mother from the realm of Hungry Ghosts (preta).

I know that according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, Hungry Ghost Season begins on the first day of the 7th Lunar Month (which is August 5th, 2005 this year for us).

actually, on a certain level, he is right. Ullambana coincides with the Taoist Hungry Ghost Festival in which relatives of the deceased give offerings and pray to their ancestors who have been released from the Gates of the 18 levels of hell, usually in the form of burning joss-paper and incense. In hopes of quenching thier hunger and thirst as well as easing their suffering... I'm not exactly sure if the Hungry Ghost Festival originated from Ullambana or vice versa (but Theravadean Buddhists celebrate a similar festival "on the fifteenth day of the seventh month which is the day of termination of the Rainy Retreat") However, it is imperative for one to note the distinction between the Hungry Ghost Festival and Ullambana (which most ethnic Chinese fail to do sweatdrop ) Just some references... ninja Ghost FestivalUllambana Sutra

Shokai hmm...Maybe next time..please watch what you are saying..typing, whatsoever. ^_^ Dont worry...Im not generating ill toward you. Ha, oh well, ignorance is in everyone in including me, so I think I should be apologizing again ... sweatdrop Well, pretty much, in the place where I live in, well, ya, people do offer paper offerings to spirits, I think the Hungry Ghost Festival originated from Ullambana, combined with ancient Chinese ancestor worship ... I just created that side remark after I remember hearing about people in the West claiming that we are pagans that worship stone statues and bald Hindu-like priests (hence I used the word 'brahma' ... ). Ha, but well, too bad it isn't the first time I had comments after creating a joke ... WayfarerStrife Soul Fighter! I'd fight him, but the girl would be really mad. Doesn't really matter. I move out Thursday and go to Philly, where chicks can actually appreciate me. hmmm ... Akanishi Makoto At least you're direct, Wayfarer. Just know that there is never any ill will here, or at least, I hope that there is never any ill will here. Well ya, so do I ... in the Loving Kindness guild, it is bad to have any forms of ill will or hate here ... but this reminds me of another thread in a forum (about Ninjas) , on why people from another forum (Bullshido.net) are 'bashing' their leader ... the members gave philosophical Buddhist comments, but a post later, that member seems have lost his cool and so did the others ... sweatdrop the thread from that forum. Anyway, here is another thread from that site, about throwing Sand in the eyes, I can say, it is pretty funny when I read about the wet sand and sharpened coins in the pockets part ... rofl I think maybe this is the reason why Bullshido forums could be laughing at them ... ^ ^" although I note that the people at Bullshido always uses sexual references in their posts and use really offensive insulting criticism ... on almost anything ... Shokai WayfarerStrife Ha, but well, too bad it isn''t the first time I had comments after creating a joke ... WayfarerStrife Soul Fighter! I''d fight him, but the girl would be really mad. Doesn''t really matter. I move out Thursday and go to Philly, where chicks can actually appreciate me. hmmm ... I remember during my trip to Guatemala, I got to hold two little chicks ^_^ Theyre were so CUTE!!!! Well they did mention finding cute chicks ... I wonder why one of them asked me to have suicide as a hobby when I posted that up ... sweatdrop (Ha, I admit, my comments do generate ill will at times ... )--------------------- Anyway, back to topic, the Hungry Ghost Festival has just ended ... and it reminds me of tales of ghosts living in strange looking trees, old 'pagan' statues, old unused roads and old 'haunted' houses ... and yet stories of ghosts coming out during this month before returning back to their realm ... it does seem that the hungry ghosts are coming here for a month-long holiday before returning to where they can live their suffering days ... sweatdrop The Human Realm must sure be a ghostly resort ... mrgreen
