The official Doctor Who website have released some info about Doctor Who from now up untill 2010.

Quote:
Doctor Who to return for fifth series in 2010.

After months of media speculation, the BBC can confirm that the BAFTA award-winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in Spring 2010.

Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007.

Series Four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in Spring 2008, followed by a special episode for Christmas 2008.

In 2009 Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies.

The full-length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010. "

Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series."

Following the critically acclaimed season three finale, the BBC has announced that Catherine Tate is set to return to the TARDIS for the complete 13-week run of series four, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special.

Freema Agyeman, who won praise for her portrayal of Martha Jones in series three, is also set to return mid series four.

What do you guys think?? I am really happy!! It sounds brilliant, plus it gives the Doctor Who team a bit of a break. wink

Martha's coming back! That's fantastic! I've been trying to avoid spoilers, since I'm watching here in the states, but I did happen to stumble on some information saying that Freema wasn't going to return as the Doctor's companion next season, and I was rather upset. Poor Martha's been treated rather poorly all season. I hope she has better luck next season. mrgreen

There's also a Yahoo article about it. I think it's neat that they're doing this. Instead of having another person play the doctor the series will be on hiatus for 2 years. I don't think any other series would do this!

I'm not happy at ALL! They're saying they're going to go on ******** hiatus while Tennant goes off and does something else instead of recasting the Doctor?? NO. NOT COOL. I really WANT a new Doctor! gonk I have really high hopes for the series after RTD and Tennant leave and I don't want to have to wait YEARS! I don't know that I'll even still be interested then. Very few things have managed to hold my interest for such an extended amount of time, and so far I've only been into Doctor Who for... less than a year, actually.

In any other show this would be acceptable, but in this show they can recast the main actor! Three seasons is long enough for Tennant, IMO. I want the show to progress. Three specials, especially written by RTD, are NOT going to hold my interest. They're slowly killing the show, and have been ever since series two. Series two is only redeemable by two episodes, and now my high hopes for series four are dissiapating due to the fact that Tennant will definitely not be leaving at the end. DDD:

Balls.

I agree with Musk. Can they not just go and recast the Doctor if David Tennant is doing something else?

Guys, it's just the one year. I'm sure you all can survive with just three episodes in one year. Honestly. You all are over reacting with this recast idea business. Why punish David to doing other things? Taking breaks from TV shows is very good for actors and actresses. You get stiff working with TV all the time. (And I mean that literally)
Cut Dave some slack here.

I'm not pissed at TENNANT, and I'm not even pissed that it's taking a year off. What I'm annoyed by is that they're taking a year off FOR Tennant, when it would be easier to just recast the Doctor. I think it's about time. Tennant was okay at first, but this last season was pretty s**t and I'm getting tired of him. After this next season I was really hoping they'd switch him out, not keep him on for at least another two years.
I don't see how it'd be "punishing" Tennant to replace him - he chose to go do something else. confused Other actors have lasted far longer than him on shows, or made time to do other things at the same time. And these seasons are only thirteen episodes long, come ON. They only film a couple months out of the year! If he really wanted it, he'd have plenty of time, but instead he made them put the whole show on hold. That bothers me. D:

There may be more to the story than you know. For all you know, David had permission to sign himself up for both plays. Things like that have happened.
And for all we know, he may have signed himself up because he knew that a break was coming.

I'm coming to his defense on this because I was with a film group. And two guys were kicked out by the head guy because they couldn't make it for certain days because they had jobs to do. They still wanted to do it. However obligations prevented on those days.
Believe me when I say, recasting when David still wants to go on would be punishing. Those two guys I previously mentioned felt punished when they were kicked out.

i don't know if i'd want them to recast the doctor on grounds that he's got how many reincarnations left? what happens when he runs out? is the show over? i think they need to save ten for as long as possible!

This sounds like good news. I think Freema is a good actress, too. smile

I would like to point out, they are not taking a year off just for Tennant. They have been saying for ages that 9/10 months a years is really hard for them, and they ALL need a break. It's not just because Tennant is doing some RSC stuff. They are not taking a break because he wants to do something else for a year.
Cut them some slack, they've been working non-stop since 2004. They deserve a bit of a break, don't they?

They haven't. o_O In 1968 when they were producing 60+ episodes a season on an extremely limited budget, THEY were working non-stop. And they managed over 25 years without having to take a year-long break, didn't they? These people only have to film 13 episodes a year. If that takes then 9-10 months, they're doing something really, really wrong. In the US at least, seasons typically run 22-28 episodes a season and I've never HEARD of them taking a year-long break. AND the actors go off and do other jobs at the same time. There are shows in their eighth and ninth season that require far more special effects and editing work and have twice the number of episodes, and the people working on those don't think to just drop everything so they can spend a year at their beach houses. They do their job.
I might also point out that most people have jobs that go twelve months out of the year, and THEY don't get a year off for being "overworked".

It's not as if they're doing this as a charity or anything - they're doing it because they're being PAID, and quite a bit as well. We don't owe them anything for making the show because they're not really making it for us. Don't try to attach some higher purpose to it. If it weren't profitable it'd be dropped like that and noone would say a thing. It's their damn job, and if they are too lazy to do their damn job they should just hire someone else to do it.
