Doctor who series five won't come to British screens until 2010 gonk
Here's the announcement on the DW website:
"After months of media speculation, the BBC can confirm that the BAFTA award-winning Doctor Who will return for a fifth series in Spring 2010.
Viewers are in for a treat this Christmas, as a special episode starring David Tennant and Kylie Minogue will be broadcast on BBC One in December 2007.
Series Four, which went into production in July 2007, will hit UK screens in Spring 2008, followed by a special episode for Christmas 2008.
In 2009 Doctor Who will return with three specials starring David Tennant, with Head Writer, Russell T Davies.
The full-length fifth series will transmit in 2010.
Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Doctor Who is one of the BBC's best loved and most successful dramas. Its journey over the past three series has been one of the most ambitious and exciting that we have had, and I'm delighted to be able to confirm not only three exciting specials for 2009, but a fifth series in 2010. "
Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "The success of Doctor Who is a fantastic tribute to the dedication and expertise of the production team at BBC Wales who have worked on the project from the outset. This announcement is marvellous news for all involved, and more importantly for the programme's amazing fan base and audience. BBC Wales is looking forward to producing the fifth series."
Following the critically acclaimed season three finale, the BBC has announced that Catherine Tate is set to return to the TARDIS for the complete 13-week run of series four, reprising her role as Donna from the 2006 Christmas special.
Freema Agyeman, who won praise for her portrayal of Martha Jones in series three, is also set to return mid series four."

I know, but I can kind of see why they've done it. David is going to be in Hamlet and Love's Labour's Lost in July to November, and he must have already signed up for 2008, so they had to work around that.

At least they are kind enough to be certain we whovians receive something for 2009. Anyone know who David is going to be playing in those two plays.
And..... Wait a minute, isn't "Love's Labour's Lost" the play where the sequel wound up getting sucked into that realm where the Carrionites are now trapped?

I'm not sure what to think about this. If it means David will be back in Series 5 (in 2010), then I suppose I can see why they're doing it. But it doesn't actually say David will stick around that long, and if he's planning to bail after doing the three specials, I would prefer if they just cast someone else in the role and give us a full season in 2009.

Yeah, I can see why they're working around DT's schedule, which I'm hoping means that he'll be staying for season 5... =/

I'm wondering what kind of jokes are going to be springing up backstage. *I'm assuming these are play productions.* Especially concerning "Love Labors Lost." David is likely coming up with a few of his own as we speak. I know I would. 3nodding
Now, I have to say that it is very good for an actor to take a break from TV or even movies. It's good for their acting. You can see a difference between a stage actor and a TV actor. Stage actors are very wide spread, where as TV actors tend to be rather tight. Which is the reason why TV actors don't do so well on stage.
While you all are getting upset over this I'm saying 'good.' It helps with ones performance.

Spidrei Thats blows!!!!!!!!!! I can't live that long without the Who. That is like cruel and unusual punishment. We are being punished for loving Doctor Who I swear we are. We're being punished for daring to like a show that actually costs the BBC money and effort to make, if anything. If they had their way, the BBC would be wall-to-wall "Celebrities Standing In A Field" or some other crap...

Wait a minute...Hamlet?? eek I wish I could see that! I love Hamlet! gonk Is it on stage or is it a TV or film thing?
And I can definitely see why they'd want to work around his schedule like that. Cool.

Just as long as he doesn't decide to do Macbeth. Don't want things flying at his head. It's been confirmed that that play is jinxed. Things flying at people's heads. A critic died shortly after giving a bad review to a rendention that had three real Voodoo witches in it. After reading it they took off into the dressing room and didn't come out for a while.
