I posted this on the Canadian Magazine thread and now I have an urge to continue this discussion here.

Well I don't know Gwen Stefani or what she is up to so I can't really judge her but I really don't think it's going to hurt for Lolita to be recognized. I highly doubt preps would start wearing Gothic Lolita. They may think it's cute but they would never wear it. If anything Gothic Lolita would probably be recognized as "High Fashion" that funky stuff models wear on the catwalk. xP If there is anything to worry about it would be more the J-Rock Punkish look as well as people attempting to dress Loli cheaply, which is already in effect from the looks of EGL Community and Cosplay. I'm not worrying too much but I'm curious to know more of your opinions. 3nodding

To continue the discussion, what do you honestly think? This is how I feel so far but I haven't had much thought about it. I suppose it depends on how different our culture is from Japan's. What are your predictions if Goth Loli becomes even more recognized? o:

Im not too happy about Lolita becoming more recognised, I dont mind high fashion recognising it, after all the Japanese seem to be in love with brands such as Vivien Westwood, so its nice we can return the favour.
However, Im not as happy about it becoming as 'commercial' as, for example, goth style, as everyone knows goth style can be done very badly, putting the more 'authentic' goths to shame. Im thinking of so- called Lolitas who wear dolly shoes and a bit of lace with a mini skirt and think theyre full Lolitas, just like the so-called goths that thing by wearing all black they are a goth!
Then again, there are good things about Lolita style becoming more recognised- lower prices, easier acsess to clothes, and the fact people may understand about it more.

I'm not to happy about it being recognized. Here in america at least, we have this problem with things being "in" and then having this horrid swarm of people who also want to be "in" and popular by wearing these "in" fasions, which I have never cared about. I've always loved Lolita I enjoy the look, the style and feel. I like how I look in Lolita and I'm not normally a frills and dress kind of girl. I fear that the style of Lolita will be butchered and killed and its true beauty will be lost due to the mindless ones wearing it.

To be honest I'm very 50-50 on it. Yeah it will be easier to get a hold of but alot of people will butcher it. Also I went into Hot Topic the other day and I saw some very Lolita-style clothing. But I think that some preps will only wear it because it's famous and nothing else and I know people like that will kill it. (Most of the people that do that at my school get taken down a peg though.) I know it will be good for me because I can have easier acess to what I love but the idiots who have no idea what they're getting into or what it's about will go and ruin it. If it would only be avalible at Hot Topic I'd be cool with it, because most preps I've heard talking are scared to go in there xd . But I'll just wait and see how this turns out...

Im on the fence. (Ow, my bum! Just joking.) I think its good that it might get more people into it, and some more people may become ''hardcore Lolita'' more like ourselves that just wearing it because the clothes are ''the hippest thing''. Id love to have more friends dressing as I like, having the clothes easier to get, and being a leader in this fashion for my town/school. However, I dont like the fact, as been stated, that theres gonna be people that wear the clothes and think that they know everything about it. Or people that think they are better than you because their clothes are ''better'' (even though we all know that it won''t be compared to our originals wink ). Thats why when that happens we will wow them with our actual knowledge compared to what they think they know wink . Then I also don''t think alot of ''normal'' girls and guys will be wandering around in huge dresses with crinolins and pantaloons... probally just a few ruffles here and a puffed sleave there. I also don''t like that.. as fashion fads go, Lolita will be a bit of a fad here, and won''t be popular for too long of a time, and after it kinda.. goes away... we wont be noticed as beautiful dolls anymore... but the people who can''t let go of last falls'' fashion fad. So..yes. On the fence, but learning towards not liking it so much.

I, as well, am walking the line.

On one hand I'm not too happy about the thought of lolita becoming very popular. The style will be exploited, used, and commercialized to the highest degree possible. Allow me to remind these are the first-world Western Hemisphere countries: Capitalism and cash are king and queen. Remember the "punk" revival during the millenium's dawn? Even The Limited Too was selling striped arm stockings with black and pink shirts reading "Punk Girl" in messy-looking letters. scream

On the other hand, I'm very happy about lolita's new recognition. People will finally stop associating Lolita with pornography, and I will be able to say "I'm into lolita" without getting strange looks and mumbled responses from the ladies who shop at the sewing store. Also, there may be an influx in the number of Lolita events at Anime/Pop-culture conventions. whee I will also be able to have some friends who can actually relate to my newest interest. (My sister and I are the only people I know who are actively working on making and acquiring lolita clothing).

As mostly everybody I cant decide. I think it would be great to be able to go to the mall or to a shop and get stocked up on lolita items that I like etc.
It would be great if it was seen as high fashion in American and Europe, etc. The bad thing is that it could be destroyed by people who have no clue what it is about and are in it to be trendy or to look cute and try to go with the crowd. It could get killed here in America.

I think that Gothic Lolita becoming recognized in America could be a good thing and could be a bad thing. I saw a magazine article probably months ago about Gothic Lolita - there were two preppy-looking girls wearing an awful imitation of Gothic Lolita that didn't look at all Gothic Lolita, more preppy, but the magazine called it Gothic Lolita. I also didn't like that the author of the article went into a store in Japan and made a comment that she'd thought a man working in the store was a woman because he wore a dress and makeup. It reminded me of a giggly prep's trip to Japan, checking out something "new" and "cool" that somehow made her better than the other preps in her own opinion.

I also think that people who try to imitate the Gothic Lolita style won't do it very well. They'll probably just wear stuff with lace and think they're Gothic Lolita enough, which they won't be. I don't think real Gothic Lolita style clothing will become popular here. ^^; I also don't think that a lot of the preps would have enough money to dress real Gothic Lolita style, even if they bought some of the stuff sold in Hot Topic that's cheaper than the clothes from Japan - to them, it's still expensive. I doubt that they'd know how to make clothes, either. ^^;

if anything, I do think that the Goth crowd will get a kick out of it which isn't all too bad except that lolitas will be more lumped into the Goth catagory which isn't as bad as being labeled a fad

Pluto does have a good point its just that...Loli is so beautiful I want people to understand uts beauty not just because Linesy Lohan is wearing it or because its teh "in" clothing.

I honestly consider the recognization to be an inherently good thing. Though I realize that American culture is different from Japanese culture, I still believe that the diehard loli fans in America will go about this in the right way.

Selfishly I must admit that the idea appeals to make because I can get things cheaper now. I have a job, finally, though I don't make enough to buy online (plus I don't have a credit card), and I don't have the time to sew as much anymore.

In spite of that, I feel that the exposure is good. True that this puts lolita fashion at risk for becoming a weak fad, destroying what it really is. Of course, the same can be said the punk fashions and goth fashions, if one thinks about it enough. It is just something that if destined to happen to all the fine things in life. I say we grin and bear it.
