Nia, a small isle off the coast Feinster. A deep forest at it's heart, Nia is not a place for the faint of heart, the great sea with it's ever changing moods all around. Ships are often lost to it. A few small fishing villages have settled around Nia, taking their chances with the sea.

Mariah stood on the shore of Nia, looking out to the open sea. The wind blew against her, almost forcing her back. She took in a deep breath, closing her eyes as she felt the sea spray fly against her face. Nia was all she had, all she needed, all she wanted. She stood, her skirt blowing in the wind. She lifted her arms out wide and began to dance down the sandy beach, twirling and twisting with the wind. She finally fell to the ground, laughing at herself. She listened to the crash of the waves near her, and sat up. Her happy expression turning sad as she looked up the beach to see the wreckage from a ship. The ocean had claimed another vessel. She stood and trotted toward it, wondering what she might find...

Boards lay around the sand, flowing in and out with the tide. She glanced about, something catching her eye. A board sat up on the tide line, but around it was tied a leather satchel. Something was obviously inside it. She trotted over to it, and opened the leather bag. Inside she found a large black stone. It seemed to have green veins running through it. She stared at it in wonder, she could only imagine where such a thing could have come from. It was about the length of her arm, and about twice as wide.

"Mariah!"

The young woman jumped, brushing her long golden brown hair from her eyes.

"Yes Jelana?"

She called back over the wind to her sister. True, the two were not really sisters, but since Mariah had been abandoned as a babe she had been raised side by side with Jelana, since Jelana's family had taken Mariah in.

"It's time to come home! It's almost time for supper!"

Mariah quickly put the stone back inside the satchel, and untied it from the drift woo putting it across her shoulder she quickly ran toward her friend.

Mariah looked at Jelana, curious. She did not even ask about the satchel, her mind seemed on other things.

"What is wrong sister?"

Mariah asked tilting her head to one side.

"Mother and Father are worried...we grow poorer with every day. I think they are going to send the boys to the main land soon...."

Mariah looked at Jelana in shock. Would their father send their brother's to the main land? Were things really so bad?

Mariah's mind fell into Chaos, a million thoughts at once. The boys were so young, would the family starve? Fishing had not been good the past few weeks, no one knew why. What was this stone she had found? Was it of value? Could it help the family?

"Mariah....I going to be married"

Mariah's jaw dropped as they came into view of their small house.

"What? To whom?"

"Benson..."

Jelana replied sadly.

"But I thought you hated him!"

Mariah cried flabbergasted that her sister would agree to marry such a man.

"Yes...but I could grow to love him maybe....he can provide me a good home, he has money, and maybe I could help mother and father. At least it would be one less mouth to feed"

Jelana replied, trying to sound cheerful. Mariah knew it was breaking her heart.

"What about Larsen?"

Jelana sighed.

"I can't wait around for him, he keeps saying to wait, he'll have the money and home to be proud of soon. But I can't wait anymore little sister"

Mariah looked at the ground. This couldn't be happening. The two of them entered their house in silence, the sounds of the younger children laughing and playing. Blissfully unaware of their family's troubles.

Their Father, Droric, sat at the head of the table as their mother, Everild, quickly put the bread and fish on the table. Mariah glanced at the flour bucket. Nearly empty, only a few days worth left. She would speak to Droric later about the stone. He would know.

"Children! sit down it's time to eat!"

Everild called. All the little ones took their places at the table, bickering among each other.

"Quiet, let us say grace!"

The children instantly fell silent as their father blessed the food, then all dug in. Mariah took little, leaving more for the younger children. She saw her father, mother, and older sister did the same,

"Mariah aren't you hungery?"

The littlest child asked, a little girl named Tess.

"Not really"

"Why?"

Mariah shrugged.

"Just not"

Tess sat and though for a moment, then shrugged.

"Your loss"

And dug into the fish.

The meal passed in silence, except for the chatter from the children. After supper they all gathered around the fireplace to listen to a bed time story from their father. The favorite of the children were the tales of the dragon riders! Now extinct. Droric sat in his rocking chair, looking at the fire. A strange twinkle came to his eye as he began.

"Long ago in our lands, the dragon riders ruled, flying through the air on their powerful dragons, fighting, protecting the weak. Justice reigned through our land..."

Mariah found herself caught up in the story of the gallant riders. Their strength and will to do right made her wish so badly that they were still alive, still thriving. But the king had killed all the dragons except his own. Every few years there were rumors of dragon riders, but all had proved false. Mariah ignored the doubts. The dragon riders would rise again, that is what the stories said. Little did she know just how quickly the dragon riders would appear.

Droric finished the story, and sent his children to bed, kissing them all goodnight.

"Father...may I speak to you?"

Droric looked at Mariah kindly. He had loved her as one of his own from the day he had found her.

"Of course, what is on your mind?"

Mariah opened the satchel, and pulled out the stone.

"I found this in the wreckage of a ship..."

She said as she held it out to Droric. He took it in his hand, surprised at the lightness of it.

"It is a strange stone. It may be worth something, I do not know..."

Droric sighed as he gave her back the stone.

"What's wrong?"

Mariah asked as she placed it back in the satchel. Droric put on a smile and hugged her.

"Nothing you need to worry about...go to bed little one"

Droric kissed Mariah's forehead then turned and headed for his own bed. Mariah stood in the living room, quiet. She could hear Droric and Everild speaking very, very softly. Mariah silently crept forward. Her curiosity taking over, she stepped over the squeaky boards and stood by the door way, and listened. She could just barely hear.

"I don't know what to do Everild...we're not all going to survive the winter."

Mariah held back as gasp as tears came to her eyes. She heard Everild start to cry quietly.
That was all Mariah needed. She went up to her room. and placed the satchel beside her. She was going to find work, something to help support her family. She didn't care what it was, she was going to help them.

Mariah fell into a restless sleep. Her dreams were strange, like someone was calling out to her. It was a small voice, like the voice of a child. The sun rose, but Mariah had been up long before. She dressed, leaving the satchel, and went into their small village to the black smith. John, an apprentice there was a good friend of hers. The black smith shop was fairly dark, besides the glow of the Forge. John stood, pounding a piece of metal. When he saw the shadow in the door way he looked up, a bright smile lighting his face.

"Hello Mariah!"

Mariah smiled and entered the forge.

"John, I need a favor...do you and Trenis need help in the shop? I'm willing to do anything!"

She said, her voice held desperation. John looked at her, and toward the front of the shop where his master Trenis was.

"I don't know Mariah, everyone is pretty tight in the village."

Mariah looked out the door, she didn't know what to do.

"Droric doesn't know what to do..."

She whispered quietly. John knew by the way she spoke this was of the utmost secrecy. John gave a sigh.

"I will ask Trenis for you...but I can't promise anything."

Mariah's face lightened instantly, she threw her arms around John and hugged him.

"Thank you!!"

She cried. John smiled, a smile Mariah would not see. It was a loving smile.

"Wait here"

He said, as he turned and walked toward the front of the shop.

Not much was known about Trenis. He was a strong man, and a master of the forge. He had come to Nia many years ago. He looked up as John entered.

"Trenis, Mariah wants a job..."

The older man raised an eyebrow.

"Droric's daughter?"

John nodded. Trenis looked over his goods.

"I suppose she could run the shop while we work in the forge, it would help us getting deliveries out to the rest of the island..."

John grinned.

"When can she start?'

"Right away I believe sir! I'll go get her!"

John called as he raced back to where he had left the uncertain young woman.

Mariah saw John race toward her smiling. She knew what that meant. "Come on!" He called as he skidded to a halt. Mariah took his out-stretched hand and ran back toward the front of the shop. Trenis barely kept back a laugh as he saw the two race around the corner.

"So, you'd like a job eh Mariah?"

She nodded quickly, a broad smile on her face.

"Well, you can tend the shop for me, and I'll pay you, it won't be much, but something."

"Thank you SO MUCH!"

Mariah cried as she grabbed John's hands and danced around in a circle.

Trenis laughter boomed through the shop as he watched the young one's antics.

"Come now, I'll show you how much things are and what to do. John, get back to the forge!"

Trenis called, trying to sound intimidating.

"Yes sir!"

John called as he turned to leave, giving Mariah a wink before he did.

Mariah grinned at John as he turned and left, but she felt her cheeks flush.

"Now, here, let me show you the prices and things"

Trenis showed her all around the shop, telling how much things were, and how things worked. Mariah picked up quickly, she knew she had to. She would work as hard as she could for Trenis to earn her pay. She could only imagine the look on Droric's face when she returned that night with her pay.

The day fairly flew, several customers came in, all delighted with Mariah's cheery attitude. She couldn't help but over flow with happiness. The day came to a close around supper time. Trenis gave Mariah her pay, she thanked them several times then headed toward home.

"Mariah!"

She looked up in happy surprise at John came running up.

"you shouldn't walk home alone."

Mariah couldn't help but laugh.

"Who is going to come get me? Jensen's pigs?"

John smiled, knowing he sounded rather silly.

"Well, you never know, Pirates might show up!"

Mariah just shook her head smiling. Pirates hadn't come to Nia in decades. She and John walked along, just chit chatting. John was glad Mariah was happy again, she had been so upset the last couple days.

Little did they know their time together would be so brief. John walked Mariah home, and as she stood at the door, he hugged her tight.

"Everything is going to be alright Mariah, I promise"

He whispered. Mariah hugged back. She felt her heart beating fast, the feeling was strange, she didn't know it. Why should she grow so excited at John's presence? John let go, with a smile and turned and headed back toward town. Mariah waved to him, and went inside, watching from the door way till he disappeared from sight. She suddenly felt alone without him at her side. John and her had been friends for many years...but that look in his eye. It was different. She shrugged it, thinking it must have been the light of sunset. She went back into her room, she saw the satchel sitting by her bed. She sat down and took out the strange stone. She turned it over in her hands, it was very large, it must be worth a good sum, but no one on the little isle had that much money. Suddenly, Mariah thought she felt a pulse come from the rock. She looked at it, shocked. She shook her head, perhaps she had breathed in too much smoke from the forge. She put the stone on the night stand and went to help with supper.
