I was wondering, since we were talking about Martial philosophy in Thunder Foot's thread, and since we're all about effective martial art techniques, what Martial Arts proverbs of rules of thumb do you find very handy?
Well, I'll start. "Stick meets bone; Steel meets flesh" is an old Kali saying. It's basically telling you how to inflict the most damage with a specific weapon: For sticks, hitting bony areas inflist more damage, sonce muscle will provide cushioning for blows. For bladed weapons (or "steel"), fleshy areas rip open more easily than if you were to slash a bony part of the body, like, say the ribs.

The ones I like are:
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft
"where theres a will theres away" "one should not look afar, when the way is right in front of you"
These old proverb say that even heaven cannot make a diligent worker poor. However, in Taekwon-Do, diligence or intensive training alone does not produce quality techniques. On the contrary, instructions from a false or unqualified instructor would be worse than not being taught at all because unscientific movements not only reduce the power but require a tremendous amount of time to correct. On the other hand, under the proper guidance of a competent instructor, a student who trains earnestly with dedication will learn the true techniques of Taekwon-Do in a comparatively short period of time with less effort.

"Winner drips, loser gushes."
An old Filipino knife fighting saying. Basically, its just coming to the realization, that in a knife fight, EVERYONE gets cut.

I like that one smile I like all of the ones that have been posted. =) Although I have nothing to add, it's interesting to be hearing all these proverbs.

I hate people who complain...especially girls. If you don't want to do it, don't come to class.
