"Sleep well, my little ones..."

The words, whispered softly, were filled with a warmth beyond measure, a warmth that seemed far too powerful for the shortness of the message. But one only had to look at the tender expression on Zaphiro's face as he caressed the three silent baskets to know that that warmth was true.

Gentle feathers ran over the tops of the three baskets, arranged in a loose semicircle within the protecting walls of the cave. All three were still, the foals inside fast asleep. Just like their mother.

Glancing over to the side, Zaphiro smiled as he surveyed his mate, her curls clinging to her head with the sweat of childbirth. It had been a surprisingly easy birth, but the process had still worn her out, and she was fast asleep. But that was fine with Zaphiro; it gave him the opportunity to simply lie and watch the ones he loved.

Yes, life was good...

Easier than the last, at least. Then again, anything would have been easier than the last. Three children. They had three beautiful little children and they were healthy, happy, and most importantly alive! Hie had been exhilarated, even if she was exhausted, and her sleep was a pleasant one; filled with dreams of her children growing up strong and happy.

There was so much love in this family. That would never, ever be doubted.

Slowly, golden eyes peeled open as her sleep waned, "Zaph," she murmured quietly from, head turning to look at him and then the baskets, "A real family."

At the sound of Hienna's voice, Zaphiro pulled his attention back from the baskets, the look he gave his mate one of absolute tenderness. She looked worn out, but content; the subtle glow of motherhood gave her an air of one at peace with her lot. Did he himself, he wondered, have anything similar about him?

Regardless, that didn't matter. Moving away from the baskets, Zaphiro settled down beside his mate, curling his body around hers. "Aye...OUR real family, love. We have our real family." It was almost too unbelievable, too surreal, but at the same time there ws no mistaking that feeling of euphoria.

"How are you feeling?"

"Tired," she answered honestly, though the happiness didn't seem to fade, "But oh so happy, Zaphiro. Just like you appear. My proud papa." She smiled warmly and nestled back against her mate, head tilting to nose at his neck and her eyes slipping closed as contentment washed over her yet again.

The baskets were still, asleep. "So colorful, aren't they? Our little jewels. All three of them, little gems. Just like their daddy." she lipped at him lightly, affectionately.

Zaphiro could very well believe he looked happy. He FELT happy, happier than he'd ever have imagined he was capable of feeling, so it made sense that said happiness was a visible thing. Then again, Hienna had always been good at reading him...

Smiling, he gently stroked Hienna's mane, his chin resting gently against her muzzle. "Well, that's to be expected, isn't it Love? After all, together we're a rather colorful pair." Not that he'd want it any other way. "But they are gorgeous, alright. You did a good job."

As he spoke, Zaphiro allowed his eyes to wander over the three; the first, dark blue like himself; a colt, he had been. The second basket, purple and bejewelled like his mate, also contained a colt, and the third...blended blue and purple, a perfect mix of father and mother both, contained the only filly of the bunch. Two boys, one girl...a perfect family.

Hienna couldn't, for the life of her, remember which was which considering she'd been a little preoccupied with actually pushing the children into the world, but she really didn't care, either. All that mattered was they were happy, healthy, and living. They could be lizards, for all she cared! So long as they were hers.

Hie's golden eyes slipped open to look at her mate and she sighed, "I suppose it is, yes. You're my beautiful sapphire, though, and I wouldn't have it any other way. There's going to be so much love here, Zaphiro. So much, they won't know what hit them."

At Hienna's comment, Zaphiro only smiled and nuzzled her. She was a delightful mare, his mate, always knowing exactly what to say. Well, mostly. Though at the moment, she could say anything at all, and he'd still be happy.

"You can count on it, Hie; they'll be beloved, with as much love as we can possibly give them."

Of course she knew what to say! Women always knew what to say to placate their mates. It was an unwritten rule.

Her head lifted just a bit too look at him - now curiosity was hitting her full force, "What were they, Zaphiro? What do we have? I can't quite recall, since I was half out of it the entire time." Her gaze cast over to the semi circle of baskets and she smiled warmly, "And do you want to discuss names now, while I'm awake and fresh, or later?"

What were they? Lifting his head, Zaphiro gave his mate a strange look, then chuckled as he realized what she meant. "Well, we had foals, of course; were you expecting kittens?"

Still, he couldn't tease her any more than that; it wasn't in his nature. "Two boys and a girl, Hie; the girl, the baby, has a beautiful set of jeweled wings; our middle boy has a horn as lovely as his mother's, and the oldest boy...well, he has a little of both. Golden horn, glossy wings..." Yes, they were theirs, alright.

"And I'm game if you are. Have any ideas?"

Hienna laughed, "Well, kittens would certainly be a surprise. I like kittens, but I think I like foals more." Ah, the female could throw a joke right back at her mate rather easily, "But for us I think butterflies would have been more fitting." Badumph SHH. Old, inside joke indeed.

The mare listened quietly as Zaphiro told her about their children, "They sound beautiful. But of course they would be, wouldn't they?" her face went dreamy, "Perfection, indeed. We'll have to run boys and girls off so much!" Ah, being the over protective parent. She would enjoy that.

"They're little gems, Zaphiro. So for the little girl...how about Gemma?" The boys names would be a bit harder to come up with for the mare, "You said she's jeweled. It must fit, right?"

Zaphiro himself had briefly contemplated the allure his children would undoubtably hold for the opposite sex, but decided as a result that he'd wait until they were at least out of their baskets before getting overprotective.

Though he had to admit that he liked that idea, just a bit.

Smiling, he ran his wing along his mate's cheek, his approval with her suggestion evident on his face. "I'd say that's a perfect name, love; but what about for the two boys? Any preferences there?"
PostPosted: Fri Sep 07, 2007 12:29 pm

Leaned into the wing, "Mmm. I don't know. I'm bad with names," she said with a laugh, "Ralf? Horace? Zeke?" She shot out the first names that came to her mind, though they were all rather...unpleasant to her mind and she frowned, "No, none of those will do. Hm." Eyes went distant as she debated male names in the back of her head.

Ah, she gave up. "What about you, Zaphiro? Do you have any preferences?"

...HORACE? Had he even slightly thought that Hienna was serious, Zaphiro might well have choked; as it was, though, he merely shrugged off the ideas with a laugh. "Well...to be totally honest, Hie...I'm not exactly sure. I can't say I've ever been exceptionally good with names."

Though to be honest, it didn't seem that she herself had any idea, either. "Maybe...we should think on the boys a bit more? Something'll come to us, I'm sure of it."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 07, 2007 1:02 pm

Hie nodded her head a bit, "Perhaps. I think, on the track of those names...I've heard some of the two leggers speak names, when I passed by them. The ones that do not look like our two leggers. Ezekiel, Raphael, Gabriel...I always thought they were kind of pretty. Do you like any of those?" Hienna was actually quite fond of Ezekiel but she had chosen the little girl's name and she would let Zaphiro choose the next. And then they could decide the third later.

"Hrm..." Those names did seem to roll off the tongue, didn't they. Tilting his head to the side, Zaphiro softly repeated the names, pausing the longest over 'Raphael'. "Raph..." It rather reminded him of his own nickname, that one.

Turning his head to look at the baskets, Zaphiro eyed the two boys' baskets, his eyes alighting on the dark blue basket. "Raphael...I think I'd like to call him Raphael."
