I own a bo and a pair of sais. Later on I will eventually also obtain a pair of nunchakus and also kama.

I asked my instructor if I'm legally allowed to have the weapons and he said yes as long as I can proove that they are for martial arts training only (so I carry along my karate book with me which has all the info in there like the weaponry exercises, fighting combinations etc all with the clubs logo and details on every page where ever I take them)

I recently obtained a flyer about a tournament that is coming up. It states:

"For demonstration of 'prohibited' martial arts weapon, competitor MUST hold appropriate permit/license & staple a copy of this to this application form"

So I looked the weapons up on the state police website and I found out that apart from the bo staff, all of the weapons are 'prohibited' and can not be in possession of without a license (so I went to get the details of the license and the link wasn't working).

Should I bother applying for a license since I only use the weapons at training and at home?

I'm mainly worried because I drive 2hrs home and back every weekend on a highway that is notorious for unmarked and marked cop cars pulling people over randomly. If I get caught with these weapons, what will happen if I don't have a license and they don't believe it's for training purposes only?

My instructor mentioned once that you get a ten thousand dollar fine for posessing contraband weapons without a licence. Not sure if he was right or if it applies outside of NSW.

Well I live in Victoria, so I say it would be close.
Don't know if 10 thousand would be accurate though. That seems really steep

you need to look into local laws. in any given area different items are against the law and others you need to obtain a "permit" for so to speak.

Perhaps u should err on the side of caution and get the permit anyway. It might not be worth risking a $10,000 fine xp

Better safe than sorry is the way the saying goes. However, if there weren't a heavy population of police in the area you drive in I'd say don't think about it.

You COULD hide them in various areas of your car (Such as the compartment for the spare tire) But the problem with that is it might get you in more trouble if the find out. The risk doesn't seem to outweigh the benefit, so i'd say better safe then sorry, especially if there is a good chance you'll get pulled over.

Although how much does the permit cost?

Found out that yes I do need one. It'll cost me around $150 to $160 and I need to provide evidence to the police that I actually train at a club because it's for training and demonstration purposes.

I hope I dont need a permit too, but I wouldnt even know where to look to see if I do o.o;

if you get stoped by police just explane that there gardening tools the sai is for airating the dirt the kama for harvesting the crops and the nunchakku is for threshing grain and the bo is a walking stick

Well you just have to check your area's laws. You shouldn't get in trouble for the bo, but the sai may require a concealed weapons liscence if you carry them on your person.
