Gah, why do I get the feeling this is going to be a futile attempt? Anyways, has anyone heard the new album "King of the Grey Islands"? I haven't found anything from my usual metal-media sites in regards to it.

I havent heard it but I've heard good things of it. It is increasingly hard to find decent slow moving metal these days. The resurgence of thrash, black and death metal bands after the death of all the nu-metal bollocks hasnt helped popularise the doom and stoner scenes, but they are really more boa than boar. Try Mastodon, in particular Blood Mountain for examples of doom infiltrating thrash.

Yeah, I finally found a good review of it on Metal Underground. I think I'll pick it up sometime soon. ...and I've tried Mastodon, and I came to the conclusion that I don't like them, for much the same reason that I never liked Pantera or the more recent Lamb of God--too much groove/sludge flavoring. They don't have the classic, melodic sound of Candlemass or Solitude Aeturnus. And stoner music is just godawful, Sweet Leaf notwithstanding. xd

Are you debating the heavy masterfulness of Dopethrone or Holy Mountain? The real doom track on Blood Mountain was Sleeping Giant. But I digress. Have you tried Funeral?

Well, actually, I had more well-known rock-ish bands like Fu Manchu, Kyuss, or any of the other "desert rock" groups. Mostly I find the vocals and overal musical style of stoner rock/metal annoying, not to mention that the songs are just meaningless--why the hell would I want to listen to a song about getting high? Doom metal isn't a genre I'm too heavily invested in--just a few groups. The main reason I even looked into the the genre was because Black Sabbath, who I'm a big fan of, and their early material were the foundation for it. Candlemass has a lot of the spirit and sound of that--I mean, go listen to Black Dwarf off their 2005 self-titled if you don't believe me.

Ah. To be honest most stoner rock has been based upon three or four criteria. The music must be feedback laden, the vocals must be your stoned rantings and you must have very repetitive simple riffs. The associatipons of colour and sound have to be easy on the eye. Doom metal as a genre is enjoyable for those who like to keep things melancholy. Although it is linked to stoners, the majoprity of doom is written sober. Obviously you've got two of the best bands locked down. Try also Trouble and Funeral.

I wasn't trying to link stoner and doom together, so I apologize if it seemed that way from my wording. I realize that they are genres exclusive of each other, though the slowness of doom can lend itself well to combination with the laid-back style of stoner. And I'll make sure to look into Funeral, at least. How could I resist "probably the most depressing band on the planet"?
