It was a beautiful night. Samawi was observing the night sky as she always did, pondering the various patterns in the stars and going over the fictional names she had given them in her mind. She glanced down at her fin and smiled. She had finally found a cluster of stars that looked just like the spots on her fin!
"Aren't you a pesky constellation! Well at least I finally found you." She said in a singsong voice. Her pure laughter rang out through the ocean, showing her joy at the situation.
Macheo had been watching Samawi for some time. It was difficult, seeing as she seemed to blend in with everything, but Macheo had taken an odd interest in her. He slowly swam over to her, a sheepish smile on his face.
"You're pretty." He said simply, blinking up at her. "I'm Macheo, what's your name?"
"Oh!" Samawi was startled by his sudden appearance, but recovered quickly. "Thank you, that's very sweet. My name is Samawi." She nodded, "You're pretty too." She wasn't sure exactly what to say. He was handsome, but she felt that pretty was a better word.
"Pardon me for asking, but have you been... Watching me?"
"Hehe... Thanks." Macheo responded, blushing. "Uh... Maybe..." He didn't want to admit it, but it was true. "Yeah, I was. Sorry." He said sadly, "If you want me to go away, I will."
"Oh, that's fine." She protested, though she did find it a bit awkward that he had been, for lack of a better word, stalking her. "No no, you don't have to leave. I think it's sweet that you think I'm pretty enough to follow me around." She nodded.
He really was rather cute. Samawi had never met a grown whale who still acted as though he was having his first crush.
"Great! I mean, thanks." Macheo caught himself, resisting the urge to just swim over to her side and act like her best friend. "Will you be my friend?" He asked, remembering the last time he did so without asking. His old 'friend' hadn't talked to him since then... Perhaps he had been too pushy?
Samawi giggled, "You're just adorable!" She laughed, unable to hold it in. "Of course I'll be your friend. Except, I wander around a lot, I don't know if we'd see much of each other." She admitted, "I'm sorry."
"I'll go with you!" Macheo blurted out before he could think. "I don't have a home, I can go with you where ever you go!" The thought of spending every moment with his pretty new friend excited him. "Can I? Please?" He smiled innocently, like a child who had just asked for a pony for their birthday.
"What?" The sudden outburst surprised her, but she only laughed more. "If you want to, then sure! I have no problem with that." In the back of her mind, Samawi couldn't help but think that this could be like taking care of a child, but she pushed the negativity from her mind, seeing only the opportunity to learn about being a parent. She had always wanted children of her own.
"Let's go then!" He said excitedly, swinging his tail and swimming forward as quickly as he could.
Amused, Samawi followed. "Wait for me!" She called after him, her ever-present laughter blessing the sea with it's heavenly sound.
