Nelos drew in heavy breaths as she glanced wildly between the faces of Wyatt and her grandmother. Pain rippled through her sides and a moan poured from her mouth as her eyes tight shut for yet another contraction. Children, she'd always envisioned, were supposed to be fun.

This was not fun.

"Grrrrrrraannnnnnnn!!"
Hiding pain wasn't something the female had ever done well, and damnit she didn't care who knew how much this hurt. While she knew calling out to her previously absent grandmother was useless, that put no leash on her tongue.

This had been going on for over an hour. When it had started on it's path to the spot in time they were at now, Nelos had simply begged to stop their travelling and followed Wyatt as quickly as possibly as he frantically found the closest make-shift den.

She could feel the beginnings of a puppy, pushing starting its own journey out, and let out another wail. By now, her only hope was that there were only two. Or perhaps one, like her mother had had.

Wyatt was beyond hysterics. While puppies and babies were all very easy to fawn over for him, birthing was not. As his stomach lurched and he began to feel sick, the innocent male tripped all over himself his entire way outside and into the bushes.

Unpleasant sounds of vomitting floated on his wake into the den and mixed with Nelos' anguish.

The gray alpha hadn't been pleased in the least when she had bumped into her only granddaughter and found out that she was pregnant. Seeing no father sticking by her side, it greatly upset her. She almost let her anger get the best of her as she almost casted Nelos aside; but she had remembered her promise to herself to change for the better. She'd make ammends for her past mistakes. Which was how she'd ended up sheltering Nelos and taking her with her.

But still, it bothered her to think that soon she'd be a great-grandmother. Sheesh, she was old.

"Grrrrrrraannnnnnnn!!"

Goodness that was beginning to be annoying. She understood the pressure of being a first-time mother and all the nervousness that came with it, but still she wished Nelos would get over it. Grunting as she lay on her side a few feet away, she peeked at the pregnant female with her good eye. "It'll be over soon." Maybe not a total lie. Yawning, she settled back down again. "Let me know when the first one comes."

Good thing she wasn't running for the good grandmother award.

Eli, meanwhile, was frantic along with Wyatt. Though the male was more on the hysterical side, the overgrown pup was near spazzing with excitement.

"PUPPIES! Wyaaaaaatt, how many do you think there will be? Five? SEVEN?" she asked excitedly, her tail running a mile a minute. "I want there to be a lot so I can play with them all!" She giggled and bounced around the pained mother-to-be. She wasn't at all concerned with the pain that Nelos might be enduring; she was more concerned with how many puppies there would be for her to play with.

Bouncing about, she leaped for Wyatt and tried to tackle him, her actions out of her control as she was simply overwhelmed with anticipation. Why weren't the puppies here already?!

Kalia's thoughts were correct on some parts. Even Nelos knew that, though she herself was oblivious to everyone except herself. She knew very well that all females went through this while giving birth, but damnit--she wasn't every other female.

Even the prancing Eli went undetected on her radar as Nelos began to focus completely on one tiny little life.

Wyatt finished up his gagging and held his head upwards blinking back anything else that threatened to come up. As his queeziness began to subside a little he felt a great lurch as he was thrown face first onto the ground. Nose slamming smack into the ground he sneezed loudly in reaction to the dirt that had swam up his nostrils. He sneezed twice more, and by the time all the dirt was out, his coat was puffy in some places and the male looked utterly beaten.

Eli's excitement did stir things in him though--his own excitement. He too had been delighted beyond words when he discovered a mommy-to-be was with he and Kalia. Any time not spent playing with Eli, he had spent following Nelos and asking over and over "Are the puppies done yet? Are the puppies done yet? Are the puppies done yet? How about now?"

His face began to perk some as he caught on to the excitement of his new friend, and his simple mind soon forgot all about what was happening inside the cave. He dove playfully for Eli's ear, but tripped over himself in the process and was well on his way to crashing into the dark brown female when loud little yips were heard inside the cave followed by soft admiring murmurs from Nelos.

Wyatt lifted his head and untangled himself to dash inside. A puppy lay between Nelos' front paws, while she licked it. A smile spread from ear to ear as Wyatt say the little male, but was puzzled beyond all comprehension. Nelos had said a bird would bring the babies, but he didn't see any.

Eli nearly rolled over with laughter as the male's nose was shoved into the ground and he had to sneeze in order to get all of the dirt out. His appearance afterwards was just hilarious. He was all fluffy and she just wanted to nuzzle him and fall asleep with him. He just looked comfy.

But before she could do much of anything, Wyatt had leapt after her and had tripped over himself instead, smashing right into her side. It didn't hurt, but it had caught her off guard. She yelped slightly and fell backwards, her legs all tangled up with Wyatt's at this point. She laughed again as her tail sprayed dirt everywhere with its wagging.

The older female growled and peeked an eye open at the two playing adults. "Shut up!" she hissed. "Nelos is--"

Suddenly little yips could be heard from outside of the den. The gray alpha's ears perked slightly as she registered that at least one puppy had been born in the time she had been resting. She watched as Wyatt rushed over to peer into the den and see the newborn and stayed still for the time being. She knew that the new mother didn't need everyone crowding around her, closing in on what little space she had.

Yet when Eli heard the yips, her excitement exploded again as she scrambled to get to her paws. "Puppies!" she cried as she lunged for the den. But in the next moment she was on the ground, with a large Kal standing over her and growling slightly. Eli cringed and whimpered slightly. The female on top snorted and mouthed slightly at the brown female's neck, telling her silently to behave herself.

"You can't play with the puppies yet. They are too little and too fragile. You will kill them if you play with them right now." Eli's eyes widened slightly and she backed off with her tail between her legs.

With that out of the way, the now great-grandmother headed quietly over to the den. She settled down next to Wyatt to look in at Nelos. She sniffed and could tell instantly that there was a baby boy.

"That wasn't so hard, now was it?" she asked, smiling at the new mother.

Nelos couldn't remember a day in her life when she'd been more proud. Never. Sure she'd had plenty of proud moments, whether by winning something, or doing something brave. But this was a different kind of pride. It involved a little life. And she just couldn't put words to how wonderful it made her feel. A deep a filling sense of joy and love welled up in her chest.

Kalia seemed kinder than Nelos had imagined, not that she'd ever really even known about her. But still. She couldn't figure out why her mother hadn't stayed with her gran. Perhaps she had run away too, because she was pregnant? Maybe not..

She had never guessed puppies would be so little, and it made her feel oddly old, and big. It was a peculiar feeling, but one she had little time to put thought into.
As she finished cleaning off the puppy all thought ceased.

While she had imagined that she was only carrying one pup, like her mother had, she began to have second thoughts as contractions started yet again.

Face drooping some she lay down on her side and waited to see what else decided it wanted out. In the meantime she thought about her son. What would she call him?

Kalia remained on her belly at the entrance to the makeshift den, her head turned so that she was able to see Nelos and the newborn with her good eye. Her presence there served a double purpose: one, she was protecting the mother and her pup with her body, making sure that they'd be safe from any immediate attack; and two, she was there to oversee the birthing now that it was underway. She had never experienced complications, but she couldn't be too careful.

But oh if Nelos only knew why her mother had left Kal. The scars littering Echo's body weren't there for show; they had been a punishment of sorts. Yet that sort of information wasn't necessary for Nelos to know. It was better if she stayed in the dark about it.

Noticing that Nelos was having another contraction, the now great-grandmother shifted her weight slightly. Her ears perked forward and her nose twitched as she lay by, ready to assist if she needed to.

In the meantime, as if reading her granddaughter's thoughts, she spoke up in hopes of getting Nelos' mind off of the pain. "Have you thought about names? Puppies grow quicker than you think. It'll be good to give them names before they grow too old and they're stuck not knowing who they are."

The gray wolfess had been thinking of some things, but she wasn't sure if Nelos wanted suggestions for names.

Eyes peeling open Nelos felt the body shifting within her, closer now to entering into the dirty outside world. It was almost saddening, really, when you thought about it. Of course she was delighted that she was now a mother, even if not all her pups had even left the womb yet, but she was also saddened. Saddened because her pups would not be safe anymore. Safe from everything. Inside her body she could protect them. Now? Now she had to watch carefully to protect them. Real dangers lurked in this world. Real threats to her real, living, breathing, tangant children.

At Kalia's voice her worry eased. At least she wasn't alone. She would have her grandmother, and Wyatt and Eli to help her. They were no substitutes for Lestat, but they would do nicely.

Naturally she had been thinking of names, but as she glanced down at her son she couldn't help thinking that none of them would fit him. Not at all.

"That would not be good." The female breathed softly. As a stronger contraction surfaced she decided naming could be left to the others. Names made bonds, of course, but so did blood. Her children were her children, but she also wanted them to be close to those scant individuals present at this time.

"You name them, Gran." She whined, as she knew a second puppy was already entering the dim cave. A moment of whailing and the orange and brown female carefully lifted a small orange and dark brown form to drape across her front paws for a very good licking.

Kalia smiled warmly at her granddaughter. It was one of the rare times she would actually be found smiling. Normally she kept a serious face, judging and incriminating. Puppies were practically the only things in the world that could bring a smile to her face. She loved puppies, though it hardly showed. She had been excited for her own puppies before they all turned 'traitor' to herself and her mate. But those were things of the past, and she was attempting to let the past go. These were new times, with her granddaughter and her new great grandchildren.

Watching carefully, in case she was needed, she watched Nelos' son at first. Yet as the second puppy began to emerge, she switched her gaze to the new mother. Kalia was impressed with how well Nelos was faring. With her first litter, she had lost all but one pup during the birth. Nelos still had a few pups to go, but if she continued as she was then there would be no worries.

The gray female was caught slightly off guard when her granddaughter told her that she could name the puppies. She had expected to only add suggestions, not actually get the final say in their names. But if that was what Nelos wanted, then she wouldn't question it.

"All right," she said slowly, rolling over to her side where she was more comfortable. "I have a few in mind. I'll run them by you." Thinking for a moment, she gathered up the names into one list. "I've thought perhaps Liam, or Geb. Or," she spoke again, not really liking the sounding of the first two. "There is Miles. Rather simple, but he was a cousin of mine, strong but compassionate."

"But if you don't like those I've got plenty of others."

The orange and brown female nodded. Yes yes, Gran could name them. She couldn't think, let alone hand out names which her children would have to answer to for the rest of their lives.

Liam? That was cute. Her son was cute. That fit, right? A strong and compassionate cousin? Miles. Miles was better. "Miles is good."

This was it, this was the last one. She could feel it. As one more pup joined her litter Nelos could feel her entire body relax. What a wonderful feeling.

With a sigh she settled down. Forget comfort. She wanted to sleep. The new mother could hear Wyatt at the enterance. Nosing the brown and blue pup up beside her, Nelos licked her clean. "Two girls. A boy."

Smiling, she felt sleep heavy on her eyes.

"Can I name one?" Wyatt chirped, with hope in his voice.
