As I am on the website, I see posts with horrible grammar, and tons of misspelled words. It drives me crazy when I see something like this...

Quote:
eHy their ho ware yo u?

I see a few posts like that or some like this...

Quote:
As he walked into the room he looked around and waited for some one to do something he was standing there and looked at everyone else

((Dam it was so fricken hard for me to write that...))

Sooooooo... The point to this is to ask people if it would be a good idea to start a thread to teach proper grammar, and spelling online. It would increase everyones Rping experience, and the fluency of all the posts.

So... Is anyone up to it? I would do this, but I am horrible at teaching... sweatdrop

Sorry.
I just don't think there is a possible way to tell someone to check their work.

These people CAN spell. I know it. They just don't read through and edit their paragraphs.

If they do come across a word they can't spell, then they spell it the best way they think it's going to be spelled - Not just take a random guess.

However, it would be just great if someone taught a few new people how to structure their sentences, so that the person can actually make some sense..
Ofcourse, most people just learn as they roleplay more and more.

Good idea, but on the internet, grammar doesn't exist in 90% of the populace.
Well, the fourteen of us that actually use grammar, could always make an RP.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 27, 2007 6:27 am

I'd be willing to help teach if there are people interesting in learning better sentence structure, etc. The best way to improve your own is to teach others so why not? Just let me know. It would be pretty fun in a roleplay setting, no?

And fallingashe is right, a lot of people who post that kind of thing are either just lazy with their posts or still learning how to write. They just write and post without any without any of the essential editing. We can't exactly force them to put more effort into it, despite how badly our sanity may be suffering when we know it could be a better post.

Yea, that could be fun. I could do an Rp type setting to teach people better grammar. It could work.

I'm obsessive about grammar as well, but the sad thing is that people know how to spell, and they know grammar. Usually when they spell a word wrong, it's a typo. Even I do it sometimes. Grammar on the other hand... people just get lazy, or miss punctuation. I just deal with it and write OOC posts complaining about it.

Yea, I understand typos, but having about ten typos in a row, that just gets annoying.

Annoying it is, but regardless, it can't be helped if people won't put the effort into making sure their spelling and grammar is right.

I think this is a nice idea. Though, I couldn't possibly be the one teaching; my grammar isn't the best, really. But that's only because English isn't my first language (which is a pity, really.)

Typos anyway... they tend to happen. To everyone. Especially if you're writing fast. Unavoidable things, hm~? And if you suddenly just get a damn blackout "WTF how do you write this wooord~" (this is what I get sometimes 8<), you'll just write it like you think it should be spelled. Or if you're clever, you ask someone. o/ Or use a dictionary. (Easy for someone who has that beside them all the time - like me. ^^; )

Yes, I'm missing the point here I know; but what I'm trying to say is, that if people aren't interested in learning grammar or know it good enough (or think they know it good enough), a... thing like this isnät necessary.

(And hi, newbie here sharing her random thoughts. o/ Feel free to ignore me.)

Good idea, even though I sincerely doubt it will happen... I'm helping to run an entire RP school on another forum, where we literally teach RP etiquette, grammar, and other important things, and I know its hard to get people to enter into the school, especially since most people don't want to admit that they have bad grammar.

Hey, I don't blame you. The English language sucks (To put it bluntly, and at times, hard to learn.). Grammar is an important part to Rps though. It helps them flow better too. I even learned proper grammar form Role playing... ((Don't ask please...))

Yes, I get that at times too. Thats why I use my trusty fire fox. Very use full, it has a spell check in it too, and it is safer/faster than internet explorer...

Yes, I do agree with you. You weren't really missing the point either. But having good grammar can get you far in life.

So what if you are? All input is help full. I will accept anyone, and I will take anyones advice. Different types of people, different types of advice.

Yes, I know how hard it is to run a school Rp. One of my friends runs one, and I am in it too. And yes, there are people out there that don't want to admit that they have bad grammar, I used to have it too, but I got better.

... I could never follow that rule, I had so much trouble with that when I was in preschool...

All right, typos happen. I understand that. I make them myself sometimes. But I just have one question -
What the heck do you think the "Edit" button is for??!!
For me at least, a mispelled post is unacceptable. I always check what I write, and if I find a mistake, I immediately go back and edit it. I'm not asking that everyone have that level of diligence. But honestly, saying that they have typos and grammar mistakes and that "there's nothing they can do about it"? That's wrong. The Edit button is there for a reason. Use it.

I make typos too, and I do use the edit button. But when some one leaves there post filled with typos, then it gets rather confusing, like this one...

Quote:
Laela made her way into Silvers classroom and walked to the front. she took a deep breath and began. " Miss Silver correct ? " She said and smiled some. " i wanted to apologize for missing your class earlier. I was...incopacitated and i am here now. i was wondeirng if there was anything i needed to make up "

Those are what I mean by bad posts. The Rp is on page 26, and this is on page 21. They just leave the post just sitting there, with out even fixing it...

Yes, there are people who do use it, but look at the example I put up. It is from a real Rp but in a different guild.

Well, I for one try hard with my grammar and spelling. It's difficult sometimes because English isn't my first language (or anywhere near it), but when I'm in doubt I just read the word aloud to see if it sounds well, or I run it on google or something.

But anyways, I think a grammar/spelling teaching thread would be a great idea, and I'd love to be in it! And I think it makes total sense in an RP teaching guild. So one could post not only their spelling/grammar doubts, but also ask for synonyms and such. It could help increasing people's vocabulary and awareness.

About typos, there are many people who just don't re-read their posts after sending them. Specially in a forum where you get gold for posting, meaning quantity overruns quality...there's very little anyone can do about that.
