* AF = Aunt Flo - menstrual period
* AI = Artificial Insemination - A technique used by doctors (or sometimes at home by a woman) involving the injection of a man's semen into a woman in order to cause pregnancy.
* B/F = Breastfeeding or Breastfeed
* B/W = Bloodwork
* BBT = Basal Body Temperature - Your body temperature when taken at its lowest point, usually in the morning before getting out of bed. Charting BBT is used to indicate when ovulation has occurred after the fact. It cannot predict ovulation.
* BBs = Breasts
* BCP = Birth Control Pill
* BD = Baby Dance - sex
* BFN = Big Fat Negative - Negative pregnancy test
* BFP = Big Fat Positive - Positive pregnancy test
* CB = Cycle Buddy - A friend who is on or near the same cycle day as you.
* CBE = ClearBlue Easy - A popular brand of home pregnancy test
* CD = Cycle Day - The day of your cycle you are on, counting the first day of your period as CD1.
* CF = Cervical Fluid - see CM
* CM = Cervical Mucus - A viscous fluid plugging the opening of the cervix. Most of the time this thick mucus plug prevents sperm and bacteria from entering the womb. However, at mid-cycle, under the influence of estrogen, the mucus becomes thin, watery, and stringy to allow sperm to pass into the womb.
* CP = Cervical Position - Most of the time the cervix is low and the opening is closed, but during a woman's fertile time, the cervix is higher and more open to allow sperm through.
* CVS = Chorionic Villae Sampling - A test which can detect genetic disorders and chromosomal abnormalities in an unborn baby.
* D&C = Dilation & Curettage - A procedure used to dilate the cervical canal and scrape out the lining and contents of the uterus.
* DPO = Days Past Ovulation - Counting ovulation as day one, the number of days since ovulation is believed to have taken place.
* DR APT = Doctor's Appointment
* Dx = Diagnosis
* EDD = Estimated Due Date - The day a baby is due (calculated as 280 days after the last menstrual period).
* EPO = Evening Primrose Oil - A natural plant oil which can help in the production of fertile quality cervical mucous.
* EPT = Early Pregnancy Test - A home pregnancy test which detects small amounts of HCG and so can be used before a woman has missed her period.
* EW = Eggwhite - see EWCM
* EWCM = Eggwhite Cervical Mucus - The clear, stretchy, and fertile cervical mucous that a women produces around the time of ovulation. It somewhat resembles egg whites, hence the name.
* FHR = Fetal Heart Rate
* FMU = First morning urine (for best results from a home pregnancy test)
* FP = Follicular Phase - The first part of a woman's cycle from cycle day 1 to ovulation.
* GP = General Practitioner
* GTT = Glucose Tolerance Test - A test done during pregnancy to detect gestational diabetes (temporary diabetes that may be contracted during pregnancy).
* HCG = Human Chorionic Gonadotropin - The pregnancy hormone detected by home pregnancy tests.
* HPT = Home Pregnancy Test
* HRT = Hormone Replacement Therapy
* ICI = Intra-cervical Insemination - Type of artificial insemination where sperm is placed into the cervix, instead of all the way up into the uterus.
* IF = Infertility
* IUI = Intra-uterine Insemination - Type of artifical insemination where sperm is injected directly into the uterus through a catheter.
* IVF = In Vitro Fertilization - Where an egg is taken and fertilized with sperm outside of the human body and then replaced in the uterus.
* LAP = Laparoscopy - Internal examination of the pelvic area using a telescopic camera called a laparoscope.
* LH = Luteinizing Hormone - The hormone released when estrogen has reached a high enough level; triggers the release of an egg.
* LMP = Last Menstrual Period - The start date of your last period.
* LP = Luteal Phase - The second part of a woman's cycle from ovulation to the day before her next period (cycle day 1 of the next cycle).
* M/C = Miscarriage
* M/S = Morning sickness - Nausea or vomiting caused by high pregnancy hormones usually during the 1st trimester.
* MMR = Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine
* MRI = Magnetic Resonance Imaging - Scan used to determine internal medical problems.
* MW = Midwife
* O or OV = Ovulation
* OPK = Ovulation Predictor Kit - Over-the-counter conception package often containing ovulation predictor tests, home pregnancy tests, and sometimes a BBT thermometer.
* OPT = Ovulation Predictor Test - A test which detects the LH surge that occurs prior to ovulation.
* OTC = Over The Counter
* OTL = Open to Life - A couple who is not using birth control to prevent pregnancy but not actively trying, either.
* P4 = Progesterone - Hormone produced during the luteal phase which helps prepare the uterus for implantation.
* PCOS = Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome - A condition which causes anovulation and cysts on the ovaries.
* PCT = Post Coital Test - Examination of cervical mucous collected after intercourse under the microscope to see whether the cervical mucous and sperm are compatible.
* PG = Pregnant
* PID = Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - A chronic infection affecting the uterus, the fallopian tubes, and the lower abdomen.
* PROM = Premature Rupture of Membranes - When a pregnant woman's water has broken early.
* Rx = Prescription
* SA = Semen analysis - Commonly known as "sperm count", more than just the number of sperm should be evaluated. Motility (how well they swim) and morphology (if they're shaped right) should also be checked.
* S/B = Stillbirth
* SAHM = Stay-at-home mom

* 2WW = Two-week wait - Also known as the luteal phase, this is the excruciating time after ovulation during which a woman must wait to see if she's pregnant or if the evil Aunt Flo is coming to visit.
