I'm making story notes for my LOTR fanfic that needs to be updated, but also making notes for my vampire chronicles. What's everyone else writing?

I'm writing my first book in a large world which will become a series not unlike that of Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms. In the midst of designing the world as well though.

Presently, it's jsut poetry for me. ^_^ I'm hoping to start up with a story as soon as I get an idea I want to stick with. ^_^

Poetry is great! My writing teacher back in high school (one of the biggest influences on my life) told me that it was important to write every day--didn't matter what it was, as long as I wrote something and did it as well as I possibly could. It all works! smile

Is there a place where it is appropriate to post excerpts? I've seen some topics; could we each start a topic for our squibs, and ask for comments?

There's already a sticky called "Extracts from the Gifted" where you can post your work and discuss it. There's no discussion going on at the moment though. A few people have just posted extracts of their work.

Just world building for me. I'm wrapped tight in twenty diffrent charicter descriptions, and I have a contest piece to do soon. I also need to do some reasurch on Jack the Ripper, and some work with what Rome will look like in a thousand years. How about the rest of you.

Tall ships and medieval architecture are my current areas of research.

What fun. I'm looking forward to designing Architecture. I can't wait for the month long graph paper binges. Are you planning on eventually doing your own thing or are you going to copy the greats verbatim when it comes to building design.

I like to combine different types of architecture, and throw in my own concepts; the floor plans, of course, are all my own. smile

In response to your question Lef, both. wink

Indeed, tall ships and medieval/renaissance/ancient architecture are two subjects I thrive off.

They are something that falls behind in modern fantasy literature. NO body works with the details of lie enough to justify what they do. Too much is simply about the races or charistics.

This is a fun way to get to know the other writers that frequent the forum, as well as a way for new writers to find someone with the same writing goals as themselves. For this reason I strongly believe that this deserves a sticky, and I encourage people to use it.

I think it's important to know as many "life-details" as possible, because if you as the writer do not understand the motivations of your characters, how the heck can your reader comprehend them? Too often, esp. beginner writers simply introduce a plot item, widget, or even a character's reaction because they are in the middle of action, realize they need it, and are too caught up to correct it. For example, I once read a story on fanfiction.net where the characters were in the middle of a journey about six chapters into the story; they got attacked by the enemy, and one of the so-far strongest characters, a warrior, fell completely apart at the sight of a particular creature. He and the other hero stopped--in the middle of the battle--to cuddle and have a brief discussion about how the warrior's mother had been killed by these creatures when the warrior was a child. *rolls eyes* A major motivating factor... introduced at the wrong time with no warning or lead-up... AND they stop fighting for a little comfort in the middle of a battle. OY....

But there are other more subtle things that writers do, not as bad, but similar... and I think it's because the writer did not plan ahead. I'll change some things as I go along, but I sure won't use them unless there's clear motivation and build-up explication!

Well, the holiday is over here in the US, and we haven't another until Columbus Day (silly excuse for a bank holiday on a Monday, if you ask me...) so most of my writing today will be technical documentation for software. *sighs* However, I am completing the changes suggested by my beta reader on a short story I'm sending in to one of my favourite fanzines. smile With online publishing being what it is, does anyone even remember fanzines??

What are all of the rest of you up to?

Have a great week!
