I've just recently picked up the series and never watched an episode all the way through (due to my dad's stupid Red Green show and his dislike for anything sci-fi stressed ) *ahem* Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone would be able to fill me in on some of the more complex details and such.

D: You've never seen an episode all the way through? Good lord!

If you can, I'd say buy or rent the DVDs so you can watch them properly. Just find some way to see them. Start at the beginning and go through them in order.

And maybe try picking up some of the classic series sometime. It's great fun, although very different from the new series.

What sort of "complex details" are you looking to be filled in on? We could give you some history of the Doctor and all, but it's more fun (I think) to find out from the show.

If you can't rent or buy them, you can always download them. There's always a bittorrent download going - it takes a while, but it's not hard. I'm pretty sure they're all still on youtube, as well. (:

And you should watch the classic series tooooo~!

Well. The Doctor's a 1000+ year old alien guy from this planet called Gallifrey that by the beginning of the new series is long since blown up. He travels around in this spaceship that's called a TARDIS and looks like a 1960's British police box because it's a malfunctioning piece of crap that is also, ironically, a highly advanced space/time travel machine.
Anyway, he travels to various worlds and times, occasionally picking up "strays" (who are more often than not young, attractive women) whom he carts around for a while and then dumps off when they become bored/find a higher purpose/get kicked out/die. He likes saving the universe a lot. He can also regenerate, meaning when he dies he doesn't actually die but instead essentially becomes a completely different person. His second incarnation is my favorite. :B
The new series starts on his ninth. XD

Thanks! That helps. I would love to get ahold of the classic series too. My sisters think I'm weird for liking the show (especially the classic episodes). I'd also kinda like to get ahold of a couple of the books.

The classic series is greeeeat. @_@ Even though I got into the show via new Who, I MUCH prefer the old, ghetto series better now. XD
And I actually prefer the black and white to the color, too. o_O
My friends think I'm weird for liking it, but I think they assume it's a phase. XD

I know how you feel (okay so maybe I don't but I get the idea). My friends thought I was strange for the whole anime thing and now shows like Doctor Who and Strange Days at Blake Holsey High. I heard it's the British equivilent of Star Trek.

In terms of popularity and influence, yeah, but I think it's not quite as geeky. XD At least, not if you live in the US because no one's heard of it anyway. :B

Wish I'd thought to post this earlier. Anyway, there's a neat video by Babel that's a "Beginner's Guide to Doctor Who". I'd also recommend any of Babel's other videos; they're all very good. Most of them are music video tributes to each incarnation of the Doctor.
