Part 1 - The News

James Potter was in a daze. Ever since his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he'd hoped this day would happen. Then, in his seventh year, after six years of trying, Lily Evans finally agreed to go out with him. It was now three years since they'd left Hogwarts, and finally, finally, they were geting married.

James glanced around for his best friend, and best man, Sirius Black. Sirius was nowhere to be seen. Hardly surprising, that guy would be late for his own funeral. But it still made James feel jumpy, if only slightly.

Damn. Nerves really sucked.

James turned his attention to where guests were filling in the seats. He saw old friends from Hogwarts, including most of the old Gryffindor Quidditch team. He saw members of the Order of the Phoenix, he saw old teachers and he even spied Bathilda Bagshot, he and Lily's dotty old neighbour, who also happened to be a well published historian.

He watched the doors to see more people enter. There was Kingsley Shacklebolt - nice guy, if a little intimidating - and there was Molly Prewett, no, she was married, Molly Weasley - with her husband Arthur and - if James remembered correcty, in order of age - Bill, Charlie and Percy, and carried by ther father, the twin toddlers, Fred and George. The twins seemed to be taking it in turns to try and deafen their father by screaming in his ears. Molly, who had Percy clinging to one hand, was rubbing her stomach slightly. She was pregnant again, so James had been told, due in the following March.

James stared at the Weasleys for a minute more, feeling the highest respect for Arthur and Molly. He didn't know how they could put up with five kids, and a sixth on the way. He seriously doubted he could put up with one.

---------------------------------------------------

Truth be told, Sirius was supposed to be with James. But he wasn't. He was wandering about rather randomly. He saw a door, a little fancier than the rest. His immdiate thought was "OOOOOOHHHHH!!!!! SHINY! LET'S SEE WHAT'S INSIDE!" but his more sensible thoughts took over straight away as his dark eyes fell over the sign outside. He now thought"OOOOOOOOHHHH!!!!!!! LILY'S IN THERE! LET'S GO BUG HER!"

Yes, he was twenty years old. And yes, this was the height of his maturity.

---------------------------------------------------

Lily Evans stared out of the window of the little room at the arriving guests, here for her wedding. Here for her wedding. Rather hard to believe, although when she'd said this to Peter earlier, he'd dismissed it with a wave of his hand and said carelessly in his squeaky little voice. "Well, you have been dating for three years."

Pretty sad, a fully grown man still trying to act like his friend. Sirius, in this case, she assumed.

It was at that moment the door burst open and Sirius entered. Lily looked up at him smiling weakly. She used to hate this boy with a passion. Strange how they'd became such good friends. But then, she'd hated James too...

"Hiya!" said Sirius enthusiastically, sitting down beside her without invitation. "What's up?"

"The sky." said Lily drily.

"Hey, I'm the one who makes jokes around here, Evans." he said then suddenly looked crestfallen.

"What's wrong?" asked Lily in alarm.

"I'll never be able to call you Evans again!" he whined

Lily gave an involuntary laugh and slapped him across the back of the head. "Idiot." she said.

Sirius rubbed the back of his head. "Damn you, woman. That hurt!" But he was grinning. "Still though...if someone had toldme a few years ago you and James would end up hitched, I would have laughed in their faces. Pretty unbelievable..." he trailed off. Lily was crying.

"Uh...sorry, I didn't mean to upset you..." said Sirius awkwardly.

Lily shook her head. "N...no...it was..it wasn't your fault, I'm...I'm j...just..."

Sirius awkwardly put an arm round her. "Is it because you just realised you are about to be tied down to a scrawny specky git for the rest of your life?" he suggested.

Lily let out an odd noise, halfway between a laugh and a sob. "N..no...it's just...I just f...found out...I'm..."

--------------------------------------------------

Remus Lupin was being sent about the place by one of his best friends. He supposed he loved James as a freind, but he frequently forgot that he liked him as anything more than a bit of gum stuck to his shoe, or as much as Peeves, the Hogwarts poltergeist.

He came to the door, opened it and stepped inside. "Sorry to barge in on you Lily, but we're about to start and Ja..." he trailed off, his eyes on the small sofa. "What did you do to her Padfoot?" he demanded.

"Me?" said Sirius, looking up at Remus. "How dare you Moony? I did nothing!"

"Then what's wrong with her?"

"She was about to tell me, when you barged in."

Remus and Sirius turned in unison to face Lily, who started to tell them.

"...I'm pregnant." she whispered.

Remus stared.

Sirius whooped. "Little Harry's on the way!" he exclaimed.

"Harry?" said Lily and Remus together sounding confused.

"Yep! I decided, the baby's called Harry!"

Remus shook his head, slightly amused. "Sirius, this is James's baby. And even if it as yours, what if it was a girl?"

Sirius was stumped. Then he answered. "Harriet!"

Lily laughed again.

Remus turned to face her. "Have you told James?"

"No." she said. "I don...I don't know what I'm going to do, Remus. I'll make a terrible mother." she burst into tears again.

"Don't be stupid." snapped Sirius, genuinly annoyed. "You've been babysitting us lot for years. Well, maybe not Moony..."

Lily smiled and hugged him. "Thanks Sirius. You have no idea how much better that made me feel."

"AH! Gerroff woman!" he said, but patted her back before standing up. "Right, are we off now?" he asked Remus, who nodded.

"Alright then! Dry up your tears, Evans, cause that's the last time I'll ever be able to call you that."

Part two - The art of the prank

The wedding went by without a hitch, except that one of the two Weasley twins - noone could tell which - escaped from Arthur and crawled up the aisle, and strted pulling at the hem of Lily's dress, much to polite laughter from the congregation. Then the other twin, who had followed his brother, decided to pull down one of the singing balloons, which burst in his face with an almighty pop before singing shrilly, causing both twins to wail.

Sirius picked them up, one in each arm, and whispered. "Behave and I'll teach you the art of the prank." Amazingly, they both shut up, and Sirius stood with them fr trhe rest of the service, talking away to the two ear olds in an undertone.

It was rather funny.

----------------------------------------------

While everyone was milling around Lily and James, congratulating them, Remus approached Sirius. "What did you say to those two?" he asked suspiciously.

"Well first off, I told them that it was good to play jokes on people and that Prefects and Head boys were bad." said Sirius innocently.

"'E say 'oo av a stick up yoo a..." started Fred. Fortunately, he never finished that sentence, because Sirius started speaking again.

"Then I told them that little brothers were the spawn of all evil, and that if Molly had a boy, they were to bully him senseless."

George clapped his podgy little hands in a triumphnt sort of way.

Remus stared at Sirius as if he'd never seen him before. "They're two years old, Sirius! They'll take in everything you say to heart!"

"And grow up just like a mini James and me!" said Sirius, grinning, while the twins seemed to cheer.

"And wha's that about little brothers? Sirius, just because Regulus turned out the way he did, doesn't mean..."

Sirius put the twins down at his feet and covered his ears. "Blah blah blah, I can't hear you!"

At his feet, the twins covered each others ears. "Bah bah bah, we no hee yoo eewah."

Just then, Molly approached, followed by James and Lily. "Sirius, thank you so much! I'm so sorry about those two." Molly picked up the twins.

"No problem. Good practise for Harry." said Sirius easily.

"Who's Harry?" asked James and Molly together.

A warning glance from Remus. "Noone." said Sirius quickly, although he gave James a you'll see look.

------------------------------------

Sirius was getting some food. Sirius liked food.

"Hello, Black."

He looked across the table to see a tall, bald black man sitting across from him, and gulped.

"Hi Kingsley." He didn't like the way Kingsley Shacklebolt was looking at him.

But then, Kingsley had a reason to look at him like that.

Flashback

"Come on Kingsley, I swear it won't hurt!"

"No, Black. I'm not letting you pierce my ear by magic." said 17 year old Kingsley, sweeping his long dark hair out of his face.

"PLEASE?"

"Alright." sighed Kingsley, letting go of the argument that had lasted half an hour.

Sirius pointed his wand at Kingsley's face, and said a few words. There was a flash of light and Kingsley looked just like he always had. No piercing...oh. Right. Sirius looked at him apprehensivly.

"I may have just maybe switched the spells for ear-piercing and permanent hair removal by mistake..." he said.

End Flashback

"So...errr...I see you got that piercing." said Sirius.

Kingsley didn't move his stare.

"Listen, Shacklebolt, I'm sorry about the hair thing, but it was all in the art of a prank, so no hard fee-" he never got to finish.

"I'm not going to kill you because we're at a wedding. But I swear Black, I will hunt you down. I will hunt you to Tibet if I have to. Understood?

Sirius nodded weakly.

-------------------------------------------

It was a long time before the party was over. Sirius had volunteered himself and Remus to 'help' James with the wedding gifts.

"Photo album, photo album..." he said, chucking the two leather-bound books onto a pile that already had another three. "What in the name of Harry is it with people and photo albums?" he said.

"Who's Harry?" asked James for the second time that day.

"Yeah Lily, who's Harry?" asked Sirius.

Lily glared at him, before turning to James. "Well, you see..."

Sirius never heard the rest. He was dragged out of the room by Remus.

"Why on Earth did you have to do that?" asked Remus angrily.

"Oh come on Remus." said Sirius. "It's all in the art of a prank."

Part 3 - New Years Resolutions

The village of Godrics Hollow was beautiful in the winter, especially New Year and Christmas. Standing outside with her husband, Sirius, Remus and Peter, Lily gazed up at the sky, waiting for the fireworks [muggle fireworks, of course, much to Sirius's dissapointment.] that would signify the start of the year 1980.

Most were outside now, wizards and Muggles alike, staring at the sky in some sort of anticipation. Sirius glanced at his watch, as did a number of people around them. Then the countdown started.

"Ten! Nine! Eight! Seven! Six!" called the residents iof Godrics Hollow as
one. "Five! Four! Three! Two! One!"

The fireworks blasted into the air and there was much cheering, and hugging and kissing from everyone around, mixed in with the constant greetings of 'Happy New Year!' from both the magic and the non-magical folk.

Sirius tuned to Lily, looking directly down at her stomach. "Happy new year Harry!" he said.

James punched his best friend on the shoulder. "How many times? He's not being called Harry!"

"Or she." said Lily, as the five of them walked back inside the Potter's home.

------------------------------------------

"Let's play a game!" said Sirius suddenly.

"We don't want to take part in your games." said Remus warily.

"Not that kind of game, you sick minded werewolf. The Resolution game!"

"Which is?" aked Peter, in his act-like-Remus mood.

"You know...we each make up Resoluions! Like, you make up one yourself, then you give one to someone else, then..."

"Not great at explaining, are you, Padfoot?" asked James, grinning, but he understood what Sirius meant and summoned five pieces of paper, giving them one each. "Write your name at the top, then write your own resolyution and then we pass them round, so others can-"

"Yeah, we get it Prongs." interrupted Sirius.

Lily sighed. "And the point is...?"

"Just go with it Lily." said Remus.

They all began to scribble. "Now what?" asked Lily, who found this entire thing rather pointless

"Now we pass them around!" said Sirius enthusiastically.

Sad life that man lead.

------------------------------------------

Sirius stood up n the coffee table fifteen minutes later. "I will now read out our New years resolutions!" He said importantly.

More to amuse themselves than anything, Remus and Lily both decided to try an guess who had written each thing.

"Our first person will be..." he took a piece of paper from the pile of five. "Lily! Okay Lily, here are wht you must do. Number one, you must promise to try not to kill James at any point during this year."

"I did that myself." Lily told Remus in an undertone.

"Number two, you must promise to tell your handsome, gorgeous husband how much you love him every day this year." Sirius wrinkled his nose in disgust. "Lily, since when have you had a handsome, gorgeous husband? She's cheating on you Prongs!" he said, and recieved a book to the side of he head, courtesy of James's superb Chaser throwing skills. It hurt.

"No prizes for guessing who wrote that, then." said Remus, sighing.

Sirius continued. "Number three, you must promise to call your child Harry. Or Harriet if it's a girl."

"Sirius." Lily and Remus said together.

"Fourth, you must promise to get rid of that cat."

"Peter." said Remus, glancing pityingly at his friend.

And finally, you must promise never to allow yourself to get as stupid as your husband."

Lily snorted. "Remus, how dare you even suggest that was possible?"

James gave her a hurt look.

"Next - mine!" said Sirius. "Number one, I promise to make sure that Lily's kid is called Harry or Harriet, if it's a girl. Number two, I must promise to stop standing on the coffee table, it's disgusting having to clean the muck when my shoes have been on it."

Lily nodded. "True." she said. "I wrote it because it's true."

Sirius jumped off the coffee table and continued. "Number three, I must get a job and stop living off of James's money, it's really getting annoying. Sorry Prongs." he said.

James grinned.

"And fourth, I must learn to read, and no, The Tales of Beedle the Bard don't count. Well, thanks a bloody lot, Moony." Sirius glared at his friend then finished. "Last, I must be nicer to Peter. Okay, next we have Peter, funnily enough."
"First, Peter, you must do one thing that is totally independent from us this year. Second you must bow to the great almighty Sirius everytime you see him. Third you must stop leaving rat droppings in the back yard and learn to use the toilet, because Lily is sick of cleaning up after you."

Peter blushed and looked at Lily reproachfully.

"Fourth, you must do whatever Lily said because James can't think of anything and fifth, Remus thinks you are quite right with your first one"

"Remus, you next. Number one, you swear you will find out what my mad obsession with the name 'Harry' is all about. Haha Moony, I'll never tell. Number two, you must teach Peter how to knit. You can knit Moony?" said Sirius.

Remus nodded, looking slightly embarresed.

"Number three." said Sirius, hding a smirk. "If Lily threatens James, you will stop her. Number four, you will read me a bed time story once every week this year and number five, you will help Lily clean up when this 'party' is over."

Remus looked at Lily, who nodded and gave him a pleading look.

"Prongsie! Your turn!" Sirius grinned. "First you will not give Lily an excuse to hex you for the whole year."

"James wrote that himself, didn't he?" said Remus. Lily nodded, smirking slightly.

"Second, you will too learn to read, and no, Quidditch Through the Ages doesn't count. Third, you will give money to me because I am your poor best friend. Fourth, you will clean up after yourself, because Lily doesn't know why you got a stag rather than a pig and fifth, you wwill get rid of that cat."

Srius beamed at them all. "And that's it!"

Peter bowed to Sirius.

"This'll be great!" Sirius sat back. He quickly changed his mind when Remus dropped the bigest book ever seen in front of him and told him to read it.

Part Four - Ronald

January soon passed, and February soon after, it seemed almost immediately, melted into March. In the village of Godric's Hollow. Lily and James Potter sat together indside their warm home, talking quite normally, when the owl arrived at the window.

Lily took the letter, recognising the Weasley's owl. She put out a dish of water, into which the owl dipped his beak gratefully. James read the letter over her shoulder.

Lily, James-

Molly's had the baby. It's a boy, we've called him Ronald. We're in St Mungo's just now, with some of the other Order members and I know Molly would just love to see you.

-Arthur

Lily glaced at her husband. "Get ready then."she said snappily.

"Yes ma'am. Sorry ma'am." he said, bowing and scurrying off.

Lily laughed. That man had mental problems.

--------------------------------------

St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries was located in a very dirty street, giving it the false impression of being a dirty hospital. But when ou got inside, it could overwhelm you.

James walkedup to the desk, behing which a young witch with curly blonde hair was chewing on gum and reading some sort of magazine. The sign said she would be happy t help. To James it didn't even look as though she was happy to be here. "Excuse me" he said. "We're looking for Molly Weasley."

She gave him the ward number, then grinned at him toothily. "Say. darlin'. howzabout you come back here later...without your mother." she glanced at Lily when she said this.

Lily looked positively furious.

"That's my wife actually." said James coolly, although he barely concealed a smirk.

"Oh, but surely someone as handsome as you isn't tied down to...well...her." said the Welcomewitch.

"He is." said Lily, marching up and grabbing James's arm. "Come on, sweetheart, Moll and Arthur are expecting us."

"Well, honey the names Jean Wilson, owl me!" said the blonde as Lily dragged James away.

"Ow! Lily, I'm coming! You're going the wrong way!"

Furiously red as her hair, Lily followed James to Molly's ward

---------------------------

There they met Frank and Alice Longbottom, both members of the Order, who greeted them with enthusiasm.

Inside the ward, they saw the five older Weasley kids with their father and Molly Weasley lying propped up against her pillows with a tiny baby in er arms. The baby's eyes were the brightest blue and he already had a little tuft of red hair. He stared at Lily, Frank and Alice with polite interest as they passed him round like a little parcel, but when he looked up at James, he gave out a little gurgle of delight before being passed back to his mother.

"Awww...James he likes you!" said Lily.

Alice smiled. "Well, I hope Ronald makesgood friends with mine and yours, Lily." she said.

Lily started. She'd forgotten Alice was pregnant too- not that it wasn't just obvious as her own pregnancy. "Yes, I'm sure the three of them will be great friends." she replied.

She and James left soon after that. Lily was feeling tired, so they decided to go home and rest. But At home, Lily didn't sleep. She thought about the way Molly had held the baby in her arms, the way she'd looked at him. She thought of how Molly looked so happy with all her children around her.

She forgot about all the worries that had filled her since finding out she was pregnant
She thought that the baby she was carrying couldn't come soon enough.

Part 5 - Visiting Neville

And come it did. The rest of April, the full of May and June just seemed to dissolve into thin air. And now it was July 30th.

Lily didn't know what was worse, the constant pains or Sirius telling her she looked remarkably like a beached whale.

Definely Sirius.

The pain that never dissapeared. Sirius Black.

-------------------------------------------------------

The owl tapped the glass outside in the heat. James let the bird in.

Lily, James

Our son is here! Yes, Alice has had a boy, his names Neville. I know Lily might not be in any fit state to come see him, but could you, maybe tommorow?

Write back with your reply.

-Frank.

P.S - You're next, James.

As James Potter read the last line of that letter, he wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.

------------------------------------------

"Of course I can come, you nitwit, help me up." said Lily from the sofa as James showed her the letter the next day.

So they travelled for the second time that year to St Mungo's to see a baby. It was a different Welcomewitch, thank goodness, otherwise Lily would have caused massive strain to her baby by attacking the blonde.

-----------------------------------------

Neville Longbottom was the image of his mother. He was the most adorable little thing, gazing up at them all. They sat and chatted for over half an hour, until -

"Ow...."

"Lily, are you alright?" said James immediately.

Lily didn't answer. She had gone pale.

"Do you want me to get a Healer?" asked Frank.

Lily nodded, her breathing was coming out in short sharp bursts.

"It's the baby, isn't it?" said Alice from her bed. "Don't worry Lily, I know it hurts, but it'll all be worth it in the end..."

Lily was aware of Alice continuing to speak, but couldn't hear her - all her energy was going into stopping herself screaming out.

She was aware of being sa down in some sort of chair, wheeled to another bed....

Part 6 - Harry James Potter

After three hours of pain and torture, Alice Longbottom's prediction became truth. Lily took one look at the baby and knew that it was all worth it. A few more hours later, the visitors arrived. amely Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew and Remus Lupin.

They camein the middle of a heated disscussion over the boy's name. Lily liked Alexander but James liked...well...James. Even when the three others sat down, they ignored them and continued arguing A Healer approached warily...she had already came over twice and nearly got her ead bitten off when she asked this question.

"Have you decided on a name yet?" said the unfortunate woman.

Lily sighed. She looked at 3/4 of the Marauders and suddenly decided what to do.

She nodded towards Sirius, then glanced at James, who, understanding the gesture, sighed and nodded.

"Yes, we have." said Lily

"Which is?"

"Harry." said Lily, causing Sirius to grin.

"And a middle name?" said the Healer, letting a sigh of relief escape.

"James." sad James before anyone could say anything.

"Alright...Harry James Potter." the Healer repeated, scribbling it on a piece of parchment andattaching it to the little cot before scurrying away

-------------------------------------------

"Can I see Harry? Can I? Can I?" asked Sirius.

"Be careful." sighed Lily, handing the baby to him.

Sirius grinned down into the little boys blue eyes [Before any of you say anything, I am aware Lily and Harry both have green eyes, but 99.9% of babies are born with blue and they change colour.], and said to him. "I'm ging to teach you to be just like me..."

"Not my son you aren't." interrupted James.

"...and hope to god you take afte your mother in looks, because we don't want you looking like daddy, now do we?"

Harry gave a gurgle tht sounded like a laugh.

He was then passed to Remus, who looked rather warily at him, babies weren't a thing he was used to

And then to Peter. Peter paled as he looked down at the child he was holding, who started crying at his touch. "It's a boy?" he asked in a terrified whisper.

"No, Wormtail, Harry is a girl." sid Sirius sarcastically.

Peter sighed, obviously relieved. "That's good."

"He was joking Peter." said Remus quietly, looking at Peter pale again at those words.

"You alright mate?" said James, taking Harry off of him. Harry instantly stopped crying.

"Y..Yeah...be right back...bathroom." he said, and rushed out.

Lily watched all this in confusion. Peter wouldn't hide something from them...

Would he?

Part Seven -The Prophecy

"Well?" demanded Lily, as soon as James appeared - literally, he Apparated directly into the home. "What did Dumbledore want?"

"Is Harry in bed?" James said, running his and through his hair, obviously stressed.

"Yes- James, what's going on?" Lily was instantly worrried.

"Lily...sit down...just...damn, you aren't going to like this." James said, glancing out at the snowy weather of December, making sure no-one was there.

"Tell me." she urged.

"It's...it's him, Lily." said James, after a few moments of silence.

Somethin in the way James said him sent a shiver down Lily Potter's spine. "You mean...You Know Who?" she asked.

James nodded, suddenly looking older than he ever had in his life. "He's after Harry, Lils. He wants our son dead."

-----------------------------------------------

"WHAT?" Lily wasn't aware of jumping up, staing at her husband from above. "What? Why? What's Harry got to do with him? No! Not Harry! There must be some sort of mi-"

"No mistake." said James in the same, tired voice. "It was a prophecy. Dumbledore explained it all, Lily, sit down and I'll tell you."

Lily sat.

"Something about a boy...born in the end of July...whose patrents had defied Voldemort three times..." James started

"But that could mean...Neville Longbottom too." sai Lily quietly, desperately grabbing at the straws.

"Listen, Lily. It says that the boy will have 'Powers the Dark Lord knows not' and is the only one with the power to defeat him. And, It also saidsomething about 'The Dark Lord will mark him as his equal' - and Dumbledore believes Voldemort will choose Harry." finished Jams heavily.

"But he can't! He can't...what can we do, James?" Lily had dissolved into tears.

"Dumbledore suggests the Fidelius charm."

"The...?"

"You know, giving the house a Secret Keeper. Dumbledore wante to do it himself, but..."

"You said no?!?"

"Think about it! The most powerful wizard in the world, caes about our well-being and Voldemort's downfall...the first person Voldemort thinks of!"

"And instead of Albus Dumbledore, you suggest...?" Lily knew what was coming.

"Sirius."

"I thought you'd say that."

--------------------------------------------

"And Uncle Sirius will look after you, won't he, Harry!" said Sirius, a week later, on Christmas Day to his godson.

"Padfoot!" giggled Harry deligtedly.

"See? He knows me!" said Sirius, in an equally happy voice.

"Of course he knows you,Sirius." said Remus over the book he had been given by Lily this Christmas. "You are his godfather, and 'Padfoot' was his third word - after 'Mama' and 'Dada' of course."

"Yeah, but he can't say 'Moony', now can he." said Sirius, sticking out his tongue, causing Harry to giggle again.

"You are acting like a child." responded Remus.

"Oh, don't be such a meanie, Moony." said Sirius, lightly.

Suddenly, Harry Potter's green eyes screwed up in concentraation, before he pointed first at his mother, then father, then Sirius and lastly Remus. Peter was left out. Peter scared Harry. Harry didn't like Peter, he started crying whenever they were near each other.

As he pointed, he said in this order, labeling the four "Mama""Dada""Padfoot" and finally "Meanie Moony."

Part 8 - The Warning

It had been seven months since Sirius had been made Secret Keeper for the Potter's, and they'd lived life as easily as possible when a pshyco maniac was after your one year old son. It was three days after Harry Potter's first birthday and the two owls swooped through the window of Sirius Black's home. He took the first letter.

It was from Lily.

Dear Padfoot,
Thank you, thank you, for Harry's birthday present! It was his favourite by far. One year old and already zooming around on a toy broomstick, he looked so pleased with himself, I'm enclosing a picture so you can see.

You know it only rises about two feet off the ground, but he nearly killed the cat and smashed a horrible vase Petunia sent me for Christmas (no complaints there). Of course, James thought it was so funny, says he's going to be a great Quidditch player but we've had to pack away all the ornaments and make sure we don't take our eyes off him when he get's going.

We had a quiet birthday tea, just us and old Bathilda, who has always been sweet to us and dotes on Harry. We were so sorry you couldn't come, but the Order has to come first and Harry's not old enpugh to know it's her birthday anyway! James is getting a bit frustrated shut up here, he tries not to show it but I can tell - also, Dumbledore's still got his Invisibility Cloak, so no chance of little excursions. If you could visit, it would cheer him up so much. Wormywas here last weekend, I thought he seemed down, but it was probably the news about the McKinnons, I cried all evening when I heard.

Bathilda drops in most days, she's a ascinating old thing with the most amazing stories about Dumbledore. I'm not sure he'd be pleased if he knew! I don't know how much to believe, actually, because it seems incredible that Dumbledore could have ever been friends with Gellert Grindewald. I think her mind's going, personally!
Lots of love,
Lily

Sirius smiled and put the letter own, first looking at the picture. James was laughinm trying to catch Harry, and Lily was there too, and Harry was roaring with laughter on his broomstick. Maybe he would go visit them later. It would be a nice change.

He propped the picture up on the wall on the desk and put the letter beside it before turning to the second note. It was from Dumbledore.

I can't say too much in this letter, the owl could be intercepted. Suffice to say that the person I usually write about is aware of the spell that was cast.

-Albus.

Voldemort knew about the Fidelius Charm.

Suddenly Sirius didn't think that the visit to the Potter's would be as pleasant as he thought anymore.

Part 9 - The Switch and Rat

It was two months before Sirius had managed to get Peter to join him in his trip to Godrics Hollow, what with stuff to do for the Order. He knew that there was a spy. That's why he didn't invite Remus.

Obviously, it couldn't be Peter, who was, to be nice, too stupid.

So, as much as he hated to believe it, Remus must be a traitor.

------------------------------------------------------------

"I know he knows." was James's first words after Sirius told them about the note.

"Padfoot!" yelled a tiny voice and a broom came zooming towards Sirius, narrowly avoiding taking off his legs. Sirius picked up Harry and put him on his shoulders, while Harry squealed delightedly.

"Listen." said Sirius, putting Harry back down on the sofa, where he immediately tumbled off andwent after the cat on his toy broom. "I ca't do this any more. You have to switch."

"Switch? You mean tranfer the Fidelius Charm? Why?" said Lily, stopping the cat from becoming kitty kebab and putting it down again.

"Voldemort will come after me. You know he will, he knows I'm James's friend."

"To who?"

"Peter. No offence, Wormtail mate, but you're such a wimp, old Voldy'll never come after you."

Peter gave a frightened sort of squeak.

-----------------------------------

It took nearly half an hour to persuade Peter to allow it to happen. Or it appeared to.

-----------------------------------

That night, when they were saying goodbye, Harry burst into tears as Peter approached him.

James turned to his son. "Why do you cry whenever Wormtails near ytou? Hes our friend! He's gonna protect us from Voldemort!"

Harry shook his little head. "No! Wormy bad!"

"Y...Yes." said Peter, stuttering. "I'm going to protect you from the Dark Lord."

When Sirius looked back the next day...and the day aftr..and for the rest of his life, he knew he should have realised then, as soon as Peter said the words 'Dark Lord'. But, as it was, blinded by friendship he moved on.

This was on October 30th, 1981.

-----------------------------------

Elsewhere, early the next morning , a skeletal figure spook to a cowering man in black robes at his feet in a high, cold voice. He sounded excited.

"You are quite sure?"

"Yes...es, my Lord. I am the Secret Keeper after all"

"Well done, Wormtail." said the man quietly. Then he spoke louder. "Death Eaters! Know this! By nightfall, the only one who could ever oppose me will be dead! Lord Voldemort will soon become unstoppable!"

Part 10 - The Boy Who Lived.

As Lily put Harry into his blue pyjamas, a feeling of foreboding filled her. As James got rid of the Halloween decorations, she wondered where it was coming from.

And then dismissed it.

---------------------------------

Harry watched as Daddy put smoke out of the wand. He clapped his hands. Daddy was funny. Funny daddy. Harry tried to catch rings. harry couldn't catch them, but it was funny.

And there was Mummy. Daddy picked Harry up and gave him to Mummy. As Mummy held Harry, there was a bang. Daddy ran intothe hall and Harry gurgled after him, goodnight, see you tommorow Daddy.

-----------------------------------

"Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off-" James was speaking at random. He knew he had left his wand. He knew that death was coming, but he would not cower, he would not show fear. He would protect his wife and son to the very end.

A laugh - a high cold laugh, a wand pointing at his face. James braced himself, he knew what was coming, and Lily would be safe and Harry would be safe, even after-

"Avada Kedavra"

And James crumpled and fell to the ground.

He was dead.

------------------------------

Lily screamed, she had not seen his death, but - inexplicibily - she had felt it. She tried to barricade herself in, to protect her son...she id not fear for her own life, even if Dumbledore hadn't said he had areason to believe Vldemort wouldn't kill Lily if she went along with his plan, she would never, she would not. Her son was he life, and if he died, she may as well.

She did not fear for her own life, as the door burst open. She dropped Harry into the cot, spreading her arms out, sheilding him from what was to come.

"Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!"

Voldemort spoke to her, tried to move her to get at her son, the only thing now worth living for, he'd killed her husband, she only had her son...

"Stand aside, you silly girl...stand aside now."

"Not Harry, please, no take me, kill me instead-"

"This is my last warning-"

"Not Harry! Please...have mercy...have mercy...Not Harry! Not Harry! Please-I'll do anything-"

"Stand aside- stand aside, girl..."

She knew there was no point in begging. She would stand tall. She did not speak, but stared into those red eyes, a look that obviously said one thing.

"Never"

The wand was at her now, she was going to die, but Harry would be safe, she was going to protect him, she would give him her love...her and James's love would keep Harry alive.

"Avada Kedavra"

The green light flashed through the room and Lily left to join her husband.

------------------------------------

Harry watched. Dady, silly Daddy in a silly costume, saying something silly, he better stop, he was scaring Mummy, but Harry knew they were safe, Daddy was just making more pretty lights. Mummy fell, but Mummy was joking, Mummy would laugh.

Daddy was pointing the wand to Harry's face, why would Daddy do that - no, trat wasn't Daddy! Harry was frightened, Harry cried, this new person was scary, he made another flashy thing...

And suddenly, Harry was alone, alone in the rubble, screaming, screaming...

-----------------------------------

A big hand scooped up Harry. It was a very big hand, not Mummy's, not Daddy's, not Sirius's either. The man had a big beard, it was tickly. Harry stopped crying.

And there was Sirus, Sirius looked sick, he was on the big bike that went zoom, zoom, Harry liked that bike Sirius was speaking to the big man, he called the big man Hagrid, but Hagrid wouldn't give him to Sirius, Harry cried, reaching for Sirius, Harry wanted Sirius, his Padfoot, his Padfoot, but no, the big Hagrid man took Sirius's bike and Harry was flying. He reached out for Sirius, but Sirius was staring at the house,he was crying, why was Pafoot crying, Harry wanted to tell Siriius it was okay but now they were away, far away.

--------------------------------------

As the rose into the air, Harry didn't know he was now an orphan. Harry didn't know he was a record breaker, he had survived the Killing Curse. Harry fell asleep over the bright, shiny lights, he was slepy, he's see Mummy in the morning...

Harry didn't know his parents were dead. Harry didn't know, as they flew over Bristol, that Lord Voldemort had fallen.

Harry was half asleep as the white beard man took him, but he didn't know that death hadn't parted his parents, they had died together protecting him.

Harry was still sleepy as the white beard man and the tight lady and the giant watched him lie on the doorstep, he didn't know that he would be wakened in a few hours by a squeal from his aunt, that he was in for ten years of misery.

Harry yawned, a tiny little yawn, as the big Hagrid, the white beard man and the tight lady dissapeared, he fell fully asleep, holding on to the little bit of paper, not knowing that Wizards and Witches everywhere were mourning the death of his parents, he didn't know that his Padfoot would spend the next twelve years in Azkaban.

Nor did Harry James Potter know, that at tat very moment, witches and wizards everywhere were toasting him, celebrating over him, raising their glasses to The Boy Who Lived.

I haven't had time to read the whole thing yet, but OMG, I freaking love your image of the Weasleys as babies. Adorable even in their terrible twos. blaugh
