Kale sat there, staring at the blank piece of white paper. He was going stir-crazy. Right outside, and I mean RIGHT outside, there was the wonderful cool beach. But alas, the poor blue mouse boy couldn't leave.
See, today was one of the few days that Marshall had to work at the Frozen Penguin ice-cream shop. It was a rather standard beach store: It was painted tacky both inside and out, and it had plenty of places to sit. The logo was a penguin in a pair of swim trunks holding an ice-cream cone. Tacky, but worked with little question.
Marshall, much to his disappointment and Kale's, couldn't find a baby sitter in time. So, the poor Mouse had to sit at a table while Marshall stood at the cash register, feeling guilty as he watched his son doodle boredly.
I'm sorry Kale...I'll make it up to you... Marshall thought with a sigh. He wasn't even sure why the old geezer needed him here. The place was dead empty!

The day was bright and sunny, a gorgeous day to be on the beach. However being a week day it was not very crowded. The little bell strung above the door of the ice cream parlor rang out breaking the silence and a couple of customers walked in through the door. The first was a strange looking man with violet hair, a left n****e peircing, and tattoo's scattered on his torso and up and down his arms. The other a pudgy boy with odd legs, a trio of tails, and a pair of horns sprouting from his head. Sucking his thumb he held onto the mans hand while looking around with wide eyes. They were both in swim trunks and looked damp as though they had just dried off not very long ago and the sun had helped evaporate more of the water before they had entered the establishment.
The man led the boy up to the counter where he waited in the non-existant line looking at the different flavors and the sizes of the cups and cones. The child drew closer to the mans leg as he seemed to be a little bit frightened, being in a new and strange place.

Kale looked up from his book, surprised to hear the bell break the rather grating silence. He looked around, greeted with a purple-haired man (who was much taller than his father) and a pudgy boy who looked to be around his age, but was a good foot taller than Kale (when not sitting on his tale at the very least).
"Hello there!" Marshall said cheerfully to the two as they walked in. He was kind of forcing it, as all good salesmen do, but was genuinely glad that some one had come into the shop today, even if the man was freaky looking.

"Afternoon." Don said with a smile. "Beautiful day isn't it?" He said casually before he looked down at Tanner and saw him eyeing the container of the 'Sea Turtle Swirl'.
"Hmm, could I get a cone of Sea Turtle Swirl, and one of Chocolate Cinamon please?" He said curtly burrowing into his trunks pocket for his wallet that he had to fetch from the car before heading to the ice cream shack. The boy looked up at the man the thumb still in his mouth but a glint of excitment in his eyes.
Don caught a glance of something blue out of the corner of his eye behind the counter. He turned his head out of instinct and caught glance of the small boy sitting behind the corner with some sort of coloring book. He smiled kindly at the boy as would most people to children that werent on the ground throwing a tantrum.

Kale looked up at the large, purple-haired man, some what fascinated. Don was the first person, besides Old Geezer, that Kale had seen outside his father. Plus, he had a kid with him. He slowly climbed down from the chair, and walked over to Tanner and Don, his large tail dragging behind him.
"Here you go, Sir." Marshall said, handing the ice-cream cones to the man with a smile as he rung it up. He looked over to where Kale was sitting...AND HE WAS MISSING! Marshall was a mere nanosecond away from freaking out, before he saw Kale walking towards Tanner and Don.
"Heh heh. Seems my kid got a little curious." Marshall chuckled, his heart rate returning to normal.

Don took the cones from the cashier and put the money on the counter. "Thank you." Don said before turning his attention to the small child that was making his way over to them. "Well hello there." Don said with a smile as he looked down at the little boy whos curiosity seemed to have been piqued. Don handed Tanner his ice cream cone and it took a few seconds before the boy realized that Don was handing it to him. He took the cone from and held it in both hands careful not to drip.
Tanner didn't start to eat his ice cream just yet though, his gaze was fixated on the boy that was coming towards them. He had seen other kids at the beach but none of them seemed to be interested in him, and he was too shy to go over to any of them. The boy was also fairly strange as well, he looked a lot like one of the kids that he had seen back at the labs, even though he had never conversed with any of the other children, he was interested none the less.

Kale looked over Tanner, before smiling warmly. Perhaps it was that air of familiarity, or maybe the fact they both looked kind of...different. But Kale just kind of knew Tanner was like him. "...Hi! I'm Kale! Wanna color?" the short mouse boy said cheerfully.
Marshall chuckled at his adopted son's rather bold personality. I'm just glad he wants to play with others...I never want him to be lonely or any thing. Marshall thought smiling, before looking back at Don. "...Y'know what? The kid's ice cream is on me. No charge." Marshall said, handing Don his change plus the cost of the kid's cone.

Tanner looked at Kale for a little bit, he hadn't really done much socializing with children before this. The people that Don introduced to him were all much bigger and often either pinched his cheeks or glanced at him then returned to talking to Don. "...kay." He said softly loving to color he couldn't turn the offer down.
"Oh, you sure? Thanks." Don said with a smile, suprised. He looked down to Tanner and told him, "Tanner, the nice man gave you the ice cream for free. Say thank you." He said stepping to the side so Tanner could see the cashier more clearly.
Tanner turned to look up at the cashier. His big brown eyes and clueless expression unfaultering. "Thank you..." He said still clinging onto the icecream cone before he turned to Don to tug on his trunks as if asking permision to go play.
Don knew what Tanner meant by now, "Sure little guy, you can go play." He said with a smile at the two kids.

"Yay!" Kale said, grabbing Tanner by the hand and leading him over to his coloring station. Even though in all honesty Kale would rather be outside playing in the water, he always enjoyed the company of others. Even if he still had no idea what this kid's name was.
"Heh heh...He's a precocious little guy, neh?" Marshall chuckled in an attempt to make small talk with Don.

Tanner followed the boy silently eyes still wandering around taking in the sights of the unfamilliar place. He absent mindedly started to lick at his ice cream as a trickle began to dribble down the cone.
"Sure is." Don said with a laugh leaning against the counter and watching the kids wander off to play. He too started on his ice cream, although in a much neater and cleaner way than Tanner had.

Marshall smiled, watching Kale (who was about half the size of Tanner) drag the much larger boy around by the hand. Marshall's attention turned to Don, however, looking over the fellow adopter. Purple hair...Shorts that match...Lots of tatoos...Ripped...Damnit, I'm the only person on this planet with out a six-pack! Oh sure I work out and all that s**t but honestly this is just not fair! Lucky b*****d... Marshall thought, unintentionally giving off an air of jealousy.
"So, what color do you want?" Kale asked Tanner as he used his tail as a spring-board and got his crayons off the table, "Your my new friend, so you can pick first!"

Don picked up on Marshalls negative energy and turned his head toward him. "You ok there? You seem a little...tense." He said not sure what was the matter.
Tanner blinked a bit and looked at the crayon box. "...Ah like brown." He said softly hoping he hadn't choosen the color that Kale wanted on mistake.

"Me? Oh, nothing. Nothing at all. Really." Ya lucky b*****d with a six-pack and fan-girls. Look out the window ya schmuck! Marshall thought, noticing that several younger looking girls had stopped outside the window to gawk at the man eating ice-cream.
"Brown? 'Kay!" Kale said, rummaging through the box, then holding out the brown Crayon to Tanner, keeping his large smile the entire time.

"Alright...if you say so." Don said a little skeptical but went back to watching the two boys none the less. Tanner looked like he was making a freind, and that put a huge smile on Don's face.
"Thank ya..." Tanner said as he took the crayon with his free hand and waited to see what Kale was going to choose.

Marshall put his jealousy aside, and the fact that a horde of girls were outside the window, and watched Kale make his very first friend. He couldn't help but smile at that. "...Name's Marshall Green. Nice to meet ya." Marshall said, holding his hand out to the much taller and better looking man.
"Hmmm...Ummm..." Kale looked through the box, his ears flopping, unable to decide what color he wanted to color with. "Uh...Your brown...So I'll take blue!"
