Uhm... yeah, I just need to blow off a little steam... Sort of.
=ahem=
You know how everyone's all for 'individuality'? You know how everyone is an 'individual' and you can 'be yourself'? Well, none of that matters today. In society, if you're out of place, even a little, or believe something different, dress different, or have a different sense of humor, you're immediately shunned. Uh, why is this? I thought individuality was sacred? ... Psh, guess not. Uhm, everyone's a hypocrite.
How come we don't appreciate everyone's differences? Hmmm? Did you notice that everyone is afraid of being judged? So, to avoid judgment, we all become sheep. We all do the same things so we don't get made fun of. We dress the same, we think the same... It sucks, man. People are too afraid to be themselves in public. I dunno whether this is human or if the media is behind this...
You know what else I'm pissy about? Adults don't respect us, because the majority of us 'minors' has been scarred by insensitive fish turds. They make it so that teenagers are a bunch of hooligans and can't be trusted, and now everyone thinks we're either on drugs or we're gonna cause problems. Haven't you noticed the looks adults give you? It's not a nice look. I think it's because of the movement in the 60's - that's when all the beef-headed kids and young adults started ruining the future-teen's reputation.
A friend of mine brought this up in a blog. He is the most individual guy I know, and he gets made fun of, supposedly. Here's what he wrote:
Some things I have noticed about humans:
~Despite how much everyone wishes to be an "individual", they will ridicule you for doing anything slightly different. They will not let you: -Wear Sunglasses at night -Wear a Kilt -Wear long pants and long sleeves in the Summer -Put on a large amount of Sunscreen -Use correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar (one of my experiences that led me to name this journal what it is) -Play Dungeons and Dragons -Be genetically slightly feminine-looking (if you're male) -Listen to Video Game music -Speak German And the list goes on. I do not do these specifically to be out of place, but merely because it is what I do (I only wore pants because they made me, but they were still long).
~People think emos are cool/are what I have deemed "poser emos". I saw someone on Gaia Online with the Username, "(Whatever their name was)+Emo=Life". Are emos not suicidal, whiny brats with tight clothing? Think for a moment, there.
~These mammalian leeches seek constant, passive entertainment. Whether this be in the form of Social Activity, unending music circulated from the earphones in their head, or something a little more or less annoying, it is there. How can someone utter their boredom in stretched words when they are doing something? Is the host lacking proper nutrients for for these hungry beings?
~Hypocrisy is a common language conversed. I believe this one speaks for itself. (Hehe...no pun intended)
I am sure I have thought of/could think of more, given certain situations and more social contact, but that is all I can think of now...
Look, judging others is The Big Guy Upstairs' job, not ours. So, if you do want to judge someone, just don't. Because, even the best of us can be hypocritical and judgmental. Face it.
Phew~! I'm done.

Or you just do your thing and be an example to others.
Wouldn't killing them because they're not individual enough by your standards just be perpetuating the hypocritical judgment of others?
Yeah, people can be stupid and sheep-like.
But people learn and grow -- even us adults.
Don't give up hope. Don't give up belief in your own power to do good. smile

aren't you being kind of hypocritical here too? I mean, you say that people shouldn't judge others, but then you go and say that everyone is a hypocrite and judging them for that. then again, since you did say everyone then I guess you willingly acknowledged yourself in the hypocritical masses.
I'm not entirely hypocritical, I don;t think so at least, and I'm not overly judgmental. sure, I'll correct someone or point out mistakes, but I'm not passing judgment on them as a person, just individual mistakes.
personally, I think that you are over reacting by claiming that all the world is a mob of hypocritical drones who seek out and destroy individualism. If you want to rant, go right ahead - goodness knows I've done my fair share here - but don't drag the whole world into it when a hand full of people set you off. By being more specific as to what happened and directing your anger/irritation, you'll feel a lot better when you're done.
Like Itesa said, don;t give up hope on the world because you ran into some incredibly jerky people. You did come here, a place of peers, for comfort after all - the world can;t be all that bad.

Me personally, I say ignore what other people are saying about you and do what you want anyway, so long as it isn't stupid. I mean, it's really stupid to jump on to a moving car, flail a loaded gun around, go agaist standard rules in an area(ie. dress code at school) adn do drugs. I'll look oddly at a guy who chooses to wear pants and long sleeves in summer, especially an AZ summer, but then I'll shrugg it off and go on my way. My brother wore a full suit most of the summer anyway and always has a jacket on. I say, if it doesn't hurt you or anyone else, don't mess anything up, for anyone. Forget the world, just be yourself and not be stupid.

As a missionary, I certainly was not the average robot missionary that you might find in the mission field. If you go to any of the areas that I served in, you will find that many of the members will remember me specifically - because I wasn't afraid to step out of the mold, to do what I felt I needed to do. Of course, those whose lives I was specifically a part in would remember me more... but I struggled to fit the mold of "DO EVERYTHING EXACTLY THE WAY IT IS WRITTEN." Sometimes, it needs to be done a different way. That is why, on my mission, I saw baptisms of investigators who had been investigating for up to 16 years - because my companion and I adapted to her needs, not the other way around.

Frequently we as human beings, take being noticed as being judged. I'll tell you, that when I see someone wearing shorts and a t-shirt in -30 degree weather, I think that it's not too intelligent. But I like to use proper punctuation, spelling and grammar, I listen to AND write and play video game music ALL the time, and yeah, it annoys people sometimes but whatever. I wish that I could speak German, I guess though that I'm used to standing out, because I am one that is different, as most of us are. I was one of few mormons in my school K - 9, but High School there were lots of us. And as a missionary - when you get door after door after door slammed in your face, for spreading the word as an individual, but being treated on the misconception of the group, it can get pretty hard too...
Anyways, I think I'm rambling now too...

But where I live, individuality is a curse.
And I'm only upset mainly because of what my friend is goin' through. And, I'll gladly continue to scowl at people, because that's what I do.

Thank you. I knew there had to be an upside to this adult stuff. smile If you had told me, back when I was in high school, that I would go to Girls' Camp as a leader when I didn't know anyone -- not even the girls I was supposed to be leading! -- and that I would have an awesome time, I would have thought you were nuts. In the years since, I seem to have gained the confidence and assurance I could only wish I had back them. I'm not suddenly some kind of power woman and go-getter now but I'm more at ease just being myself. People can take me or leave me, it's their choice. I had some of that attitude back then but I was more defensive about it. My "I'll be who I am and you'll like it or lump it!" attitude has mellowed to just "I am who I am." It's hard to be an individual when you don't know who you are. Yeah, the sheeple are annoying. Sometimes they're hurtful. (My school years were so bad that I would consider sending my children to school to be a failure on my part. I don't say it's rational, just that I'd feel that way.) However, most of them are searching for identity. Sometimes people find it in the wrong place and sometimes people define themselves by what they are and what other people aren't. But identity isn't a one-shot thing. Life is a long journey and who you are today may be different from who you will be tomorrow or five years or fifty years from now. As the song says "improvement and progression have one eternal round." I'm sorry your friend is having so much trouble. All you guys can do is be the best person you can be. Some people aren't going to like it. It's their loss now but that doesn't mean they're lost forever.

you, my good sir (madame?), are the hypocrite!
it is only you who decides whether to conform or not. it is you and you alone who gives power to other people to dictate whether you are "accepted".
not everyone is going to like you. no matter what you do, some people just aren't going to like you. don't lose any sleep over it, it's just a fact of life. it doesn't have to be something you did, you just probably rub some people the wrong way or they just aren't enticed by your personality, just like how you just don't like people for various reasons. it's a matter of taste.
be yourself without worry of rejection (i admit that "be yourself" is quite corny, but whatever...).
don't give those people the power to make you feel bad about who you are. blast kingdom hearts music in your car with the windows rolled down. break out your ds for a quick game of elite beat agents in public, wear that awesome bleach t-shirt you were so excited to wear when you bought it but are now too embarrased to be seen in it in public, and dont be afraid to download that latest chapter of naruto to the library computer lab and read it in public for all to see. after all, last weeks cliffhanger was a doozie...
that is all...
