Three Tailed Fox

PostPosted: Tue Aug 21, 2007 10:17 pm

Tahnia had somehow managed to get herself lost in the vast plains. She had been wandering for a good few hours now and, upon stopping for the first time, had finally taken note that she had absolutely no idea where she was or how exactly she'd gotten there. The dry grasses and withered trees that surrounded her all looked identical to the ones on either side of her. She couldn't even remember which direction she'd come from at this point. Sighing and looking quite unlike her usual perky, playful self, she padded about in a wide circle, her nose in the air as she attempted without success to catch a familiar scent or see some landmark she remembered to lead her back to her little home.

With an exhasperated sigh she plopped down onto her haunches to think.

Not too far from where Tahnia had sat herself down, another weary traveller sat right up against one of the many withering trees. It was Takatifu, a rather timid albino cheetah. Because his fur was so pale and thin, his mother had always warned him that he could get sunburn if he didn't take shelter when the sun was highest in the sky. Unfortunatly, when Takatifu had left the jungle this morning in search of food, he had gotten completely and utterly lost. Now, in his mind, he had no choice but to wait until sunset before he start finding his way home.

"This sucks!" He whined, keeping his body pressed firmly against the tree so that no part of him was exposed to the sun.

Tahnia's ears perked at the sound of a voice, and her head swivelled to find the source. In the shadows sat a white figure, and from his lament he apparently was in some sort of dilemma. "What sucks?" she replied, standing up and padding over to the shadows to get a better look at the snowy creature. She tilted her head and gazed at Takatifu from where she sat, admiring his plain but brilliant coat.

"This!" He continued to whine, not even realising at first who he was talking to. "I got lost and now I have to wait until sunset before I can find my way home!" When he realised that he had company, he jumped as if she had sneaked up on him. "Where did you come from?" His pinkish-red eyes darted quickly over the female cheetah, allowing him to breathe a sigh of relief at the fact that she wasn't a lion or some other non-cheetah creature.

"Sunset? Why do you have to wait until it's all dark out and stuff? Can't you see in the dark? Or... are you afraid of it?" Tahnia's head tilted to one side, smiling softly at the pale cheetah. She lowered her voice and added, "If you're afraid of the dark, it's okay with me. I promise not to tell anyone." She paused at his question. "Well, I was over there, and then I came over here. I guess that's where I came from."

Takatifu blinked and stared at the female. Was she for real? "No, I'm not scared of the dark." He snapped back. "I'm scared of that stupid ball of fire up there!" Saying that, he motioned towards the sun. "The skin underneath my fur is very delicate, and if I stay out in the sun for too long, I'll burn!"

As he said that, he pressed his body even harder against the tree. "As long as I stay in the shade, I'll be fine."

"You're scared... of the sun?" One of her brows quirked at his response. The dark, she could understand, but the sun? That was a little new. "Wait... burn? Like, you'll catch on fire?" She frowned. She didn't like the thought of her new buddy bursting info flames. That certainly did not sound fun. "Sooo, you've never been out in the sun, ever?"

Takatifu gulped as he recalled the one and only time that he had ever ventured out into the sun when it was high in the sky. "When I was still very young, I went out to play with my siblings. Their coats are white, and so are my parents', and none of them have ever had a problem." He frowned. "Anyways, I went out to play, and I was fine at first. Then suddenly, I started getting this horrible pain all over my body."

The albino cheetah shook his head. "I ignored it to begin with, just assuming that it was my body adjusting to me actually having fun. It just got worse and worse though, and then I realised that the sun was burning my skin!" He let out a heavy sigh. "Ever since then, I've known that it's too risky to go out in the sun when it's highest in the sky. I can only go out at night, or at sunset if needs be."

"Aww. That's so terrible. Well, why don't you just sleep all day long, and then when the sun comes up you can get up and hunt and stuff? All the best food comes out at night anyways." She smiled softly. "I wish I could help you, but I can't really turn off the sun... What do you do while the sun is up? Are you hungry? I can go catch something if you are."

Takatifu rolled his eyes. "To be honest, my eyes don't work all that well either. I can see a little bit better during the day, so that's why I go out to hunt at around dawn." He frowned. "I'm such an idiot. I can't believe I got lost like this!"

When the female cheetah offer to help him, he managed a small smile and shook his head. "Nah, I'll be alright. As long as I stay in the shade until the sun sets, I'll be fine." Saying that, Takatifu relaxed a little. "By the way, my name is Takatifu."

"Hey, it's okay. Everyone gets lost sometimes. I get lost sometimes. Like right now." She sat down and scratched an itch behind her ear. "I'm Tahnia. If you're sure... but I saw a den full of hares not too far away, and they were pretty juicy-looking. It wouldn't be any trouble if you wanted me to go get one." She grinned.

Although he was a scaredy cat, Takatifu had his pride. There was no way he could let a female go hunting for him when he was actually a fully grown adult. Plus, if his father ever found out about such a thing, he would be so ashamed.

"It's fine, really! I'm not all that hungry anyway." That was actually a lie, but as long as his tummy didn't start rumbling, Tahnia would never have to know. "Tahnia is a nice name." He said with a smile, trying to change the subject.

"Alright, fine, suit yourself Mr. Tough Guy," Tahnia said, sticking her tongue out at him playfully. "The offer's still open if you change your mind."

She tilted her head at the sudden topic change. "Yeah? Well, thanks. I guess it is nice. So is Takatifu. What's it mean, do you know?"

Out of everything that Takatifu could possibly be, he definatly wasn't a tough guy. So being called that actually felt like a compliment to him. He was quite sure it wasn't meant that way though, so he simply smiled and rolled his eyes.

At Tahnia's question, the albino male blinked and tried to think back to what his father had told him was the meaning of his name. "I think it means pure or holy...something like that."
