Hello everyone, I'm starting 12th grade this year and I have been in takeing music lessons since 4th garde. Like I said I play the trumpet...but I absolutly hate the trumpet! My mom MADE me play it and I didn't get to pick my instrument! Even though I'm pretty good at it now, I would like a fresh new start for college and I'd like to switch to oboe. Do you think this would be a good idea? And since I'm going to have to buy my own oboe I was looking at the Barrington since that's pretty much all I can afford (If I ever get a job...) Would this be a wise discision?
I don't even play trumpet in marching band, I'm section leader of the mellophones and my two close friends both play oboe/mellophone. Even my friends bought me a flute for my birthday! Which I've become pretty good at!
Any advice or information would be great!

Hello!

Everyone should have the choice of picking their own instrument.
Based on your situation, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to switch from trumpet to oboe. I have played oboe since 5th grade, and am now going into 10th. The downfall to it is that you have to learn how to play with a double reed, and many new fingerings. Also, you would have to make up the lost time in a matter of a year in order to be around a decent oboist. As for a Barrington oboe, I wouldn't suggest it. From what I hear, it's a basic gamble with them. Some are good, while others are decent-sucky. I have a Yamaha oboe that is plastic, and it works beautifully.

Just remember that you're going to either buy yourself reeds, which are expensive, the cork on the oboe needs to be taken care of, and cleaning is a must (especially for wooden models.) Hope this helps!

Good luck. It will be very rough, not just to switch from 3 buttons to around 20, but switching from buzzing to playing on a reed instrument, and a double-reed at that. People who learn oboe as their first instrument, or clarinets etc. that switch to oboe take a few years to sound good. Its a shame you couldnt choose your own instrument (which doesnt make sense to me) but if you really want to play oboe of all things, go for it.

I would think seriously, and probably borrow one of your friends' oboes just to see if it's something you're capable of doing, it's a lot of hard work and maintenance, and maaaany keys, I play a Buffet wood-model, and I treat it like my baby 3nodding

WUTEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY! JUST DONT SWITCH BECAUSE YOUR FRIENDS PLAY THIS ONE INSTRUMENT. SWITCH BECAUSE YOU WANT TO. ALSO THERE'S A JUNIOR IN OUR BAND THAT PLAYS OBOE..I'VE THAT THING....THAT INSTRUMENT'S DIFFICULT! crying

Do it if you want.

I was kind of in the same situation as you. I started on trumpet, but it was my choice. An choice that I really should have thought more about before doing it. =/

In my senior year of high school I got my own bassoon, and switched for college.

Playing an instrument that you enjoy can make band 100 times more fun. I'd say it's worth it for that, at least, but you have to make sure you actually do like the oboe. I went through many instruments thinking I'd like them better, and I was misaken. =/ (except for with the bassoon and alto saxophone!)

I've actually tried a clarinet once. I played three notes and stopped. This was at the same time when I started playing trumpet. Anyway, think of it like this, you'll have an advantage if you can play both.

What a radical change O.O
Didja know that the oboe is the second most annoying instrument?

First is the bagpipe razz

Stay away from Barrington. Check with Music and Arts Center (if you're in the US). They sometimes have used instruments that used to be rentals for sale and they always have rent-to-own plans. They have a system of "price levels". 1 is brand new, 2 is not new but not damaged, 3 is somewhat worn, and 4's have had major work done to them (though they're not always in bad shape). The thing is that the price levels are different for each brand. The best deals are usually classed as misc., level 4 but I don't know if those are available for the public to buy. I got my misc. PL4 instrument when I was working in their repair shop. Compare prices on refurbished (sometimes called "Scratch and Dent") instruments with rent-to-own prices. I think you should aim to get a PL3 from a brand name that's familiar - Selmer, Yamaha, Buffet, etc. as a rental. Music and Arts doesn't sell anything as "refurbished" they won't repair (there are plenty of brand names that they won't repair, so that's why brands are really important, especially when bargain hunting).
