THE BATTLE SYSTEM DISCUSSION

I intend for this threat to be exclusively about Battle systems. To get us started here is a brief intro: Many different RPs have a unique battle system in place. While others use the standard system, which is just RP the entire thing out. While there is nothing really wrong with this System, it's just that it is very easy to accidentally God mod, or auto-hit. WELL I SAY IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE.

What is a Battle System

I’ll define a Battle System as a way the RP handles fighting. It is a way that one person can defeat another person.

The purpose

The purpose of this Thread is for people to post their ideas for a good Battle System. These Battle systems can then be used for Action RPs and Arena/Battle RPs. It is my intention for this thread to be a place GMs may come to for ideas for their RP system. I want this thread to be a Collection of Battle Systems, but at the same time a discussion of the good and bad of each one.

Why do we need a New one?

I feel that the current one is very inefficient. It leaves so much in the hands of the Rp-er that they are almost tempted to God-Modding, and Auto-Hitting. I feel like a change is needed and if you share my belief then this thread is for you.

What am I looking for?

I’m looking for ideas that might make fighting efficient, yet fun. I’m looking for Systems that address the Auto-Hit problem, and various other problems with the current system.

How Should I Start

Start by posting an Idea for a Battle System in the following format. It may be an idea or it may be a Battle System used for a previous RP. General Idea I’m looking for is a system that is fun, yet efficient. This doesn’t mean that the system has to be overly complicated; Simple Systems are good too. Remember: if possible try to make the Battle System focus on known issues.

Test out your Systems!

If you feel the need to test out you system you may go this thread especially created for this purpose. Everything is explained there including how to get testers and what the Creators have to start the Mock Fight.

thread is now OPEN.

Name: Thread Specific Battle
Description: Where it says post action, Gaia simply should have an option for "add battle system". This should be for the thread opener only. Now the thread opener simply enters the basic stats for certain classes which they have in their RP. Now the poster in the thread goes to post action and goes to the battle system, from there he can choose a class that was created by the OPer. Now in order to battle, under post action you can choose the actions or use magic and skills set by the OPer to anyone else part of the thread. Now when the HP reaches 0, the battle system is simply disabled for them and they would have to choose another character.

Strengths: The basic equations for the attack and defenses and SP and HP are all set by Gaia. All the OPer has to do is enter basic stats, create classes, and items.

So you mean that there should be a separate interface for the fight?
PostPosted: Sat Aug 18, 2007 6:25 pm

No, it would be embedded into the post options. The battle happens in the thread. Maybe with the HP/MP status bar under our avatar, since there is a lot of free space there...

Its a good idea, except Gaia is a very general place. If there was a Health/Mana bar on the Avi then it would imply that Gaia allows players to fight with others (not in the RP).

Here's my Idea:

Name: TBD
Description: In this Battle System there would be Battle Points (BP). Battle Points will be the main point system in the RP. When the RP starts people start with 1 BP and whenever someone wins a fight or something 2 points will be added his BP, as a reward for winning.

How is this related to fights? Well my idea uses the person's battle points to find what is known as the Winning Percentage (WP). I will use the following formula:
Player 1's WP = ((player 1's BPs) / (Player 1's BPs + Player 2's BPs)) X 100

This will get Player 1's winning percentage (WP). The Winning Percentage must always be a whole number so always round it up or down. After both sides get the WP, one of the players rolls a 100-sided dice.

EX; Player 1 = 75% WP and Player 2 = 25% WP then when the die is rolled if the number is between 1-75 then player 1 wins, and if the number is between 76-100 then player 2 wins.

Then the two players will RP and the person who is supposed to win, will win in the end. But How he wins is decided by the rp-ing.

Strengths: If the players auto-hit or God-mod, some of it may be allowed as long as in the end the person who is supposed to win, wins. and the person supposed to lose, loses.

Another strength is that it allows characters to progress, while at the same time giving both sides a chance to win.

Name: Battle Dice System...
Description: It's not my system. It's something the UGMF uses since, as said before, one tends to accidentally GM.
Strengths: This is both a strength and a weakness. The Dice system has to do with luck for example: If this was a military rp where one has to use a rifle to kill or wound you have to use a dice. Rifles in the UGMF are fired off by using a six-sided dice. The more shots or people you shoot at, the more dice you roll.
1-You miss and the enemy fires back hitting a vital area
2-You miss and the enemy fires back hitting a non-vital area
3-You miss
4-You hit the enemy's weapon and he is disarmed
5-You hit the enemy in a non-vital area
6-You hit the enemy, and he's dead.
Example: Cpl. Jake Prior took aim with his rifle at 3 enemy soldiers. Putting his weapon on a three round burst he fired on one man, shifted his aim and shot at the other, then shifted once more squeezing his trigger hoping this was the last time he had to.
Okay...because there's three people I rolled a six sided dice 3 times and got a 1, 4, and a 3. The next post would end up like this: Jake felt the bullets enter his body from the first target he fired at. Somehow he messed up early on and was unlucky enough to hit all three.
This type works the same way for melee attacks. Depend on what you're doing, each dice could be...modified to the creators liking.
Name of Creator: Not really me..no idea who made this.

Delta: that is a very interesting Battle System, and seems to be rather effective in combatting the issues of GM. But Don't you think having a chance to one-shot someone is a bit harsh, if people keep dying like this, wouldn't need to have more than one character in the RP or need to keep making news because old ones die?

Just wondering....

Name: Action Turn-based System
Description: This is a very simple system that doesn't require too much memorization or risk of being killed easily. Players post an action and roll at the same time and the roll determines how much damage is done. You roll 1d8 for normal attacks.

1-Misses. Causes no damage to the enemy.
2-7-Varying degrees of damage, 2 being the least amount of damage, while 7 being the highest.
8-Critical. Delivers twice the damage.

Players can either go off each other's rolls or have a referee analyze the data given. Players would have to post their stats before hand before each fight.

Strengths: Very simple and very easy to use. The player would only have to keep up with small commands like, Attack, Guard, Item, Ability. However, this type of battle is mainly made for one on one combat as multiple people all posting at once would get very confusing. Players would have to keep track of his enemy's health and items and cheating might occur more often as players might lie about their stats. The battles might take awhile too if the two players are slowly whittling each other's health down.

Creator: I learned this from Lazy Shurikener Kunai.

I'd just like to point out that it seems rather infeasible for there to be a universal combat system, for one very large reason: Every RP has different requirements. What is doable in one RP is inappropriate in another. For instance, someone posted an example where they were fighting with rifles, and could one shot each other; it is a modern type of game, and extremely appropriate. this wouldn't work in a fantasy setting however, or even a setting without rifles. Furthermore, if a system doesn't allow anything based on a player's own skill with word crafting, some players would be unhappy. In fact, there are a significant amount of players who abhor the idea of dice tainting their RPs and battles.

That said, I am not one of those people, but I do believe that a battle system, if in place, should be extremely personal to your RP, and should be more complex than some general dice rolls. Either go all the way, or don't do it all, in my opinion. To back that up, I invite people to take a look at the RP in my sig. There is a dice system in there that creates a very large amount of depth to the battles, one which I designed. It is not exactly for the squeamish, but since I am capable of running all of the dice rolls myself, the players never need to know exactly how it works, if they don't desire to. It works quite well.

First off, I understand what you mean by having a Battle System Unique to your RP. But as I have pointed out, I wanted this to be a place Where good Battle System could be posted and act like a collection of systems should a GM come here for ideas for his system. These are different Systems I know, and I never intended to have a Universal System.
