Do you think Zim really knows he's not on a real mission? I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Maybe he knows but hopes to win over the Tallest by destroying Earth anyway. Or maybe he knows and just wants to beleive he's on a real mission. But if that's true how much can Zim take? If he knows in his heart that his people hate him then how long would it take before Zim snaps? I saw this one episode with that green ball that kept growing and it really disturbed me! If you pay attention Zim almost looked like he was ready to just blow everything up and end it all. Dib told him it was stupid but he didn't even care! He didn't even try to move when the explosion came toward him...

Interesting question.

If you watch The Nightmare Begins, you can tell that he knows he screwed up. I remember someone giving a good argument about how Zim doesn't know, but unfortunately I can't remember much of it.

I'd prefer to think not. As a defective Irken, I tend to think that Zim exists very much for the moment, and doesn't really plan things out, and wouldn't think that much about it.

Actually, in Walk For Your Lives, Zim wasn't wanting to commit suicide. He's an idiot, in the nicest sense of the word. Now, don't take me wrong, I love Zim, and in his own way, he is absolutely brilliant and very manipulative, but when it comes to common sense, well... that was something he just wasn't graced with.

Zim does stupid things. He just doesn't think. At all. Ever. He was so busy worrying about how the Tallest would see this massive explosion and dock him points for Probing Day (which, by the way, the name of that is simply so wrong for a show about aliens) that he didn't weigh the consequences in his mind. He simply wanted to to be rid of it.

This is Nickelodeon we're talking about. They let Jhonen get away with all sorts of crap they'd probably never do with anyone else (my guess; because it was they who asked him to create the show. A bit of a pride issue - tis' human nature) But Nickelodeon would NEVER allow anything that has to do with suicide. Not an idea that they would want to implement inside the mind of a child, not to mention all the angry parents boycotting the network and causing an uproar. Heck - Nick didn't even want Danny Phantom, a show about a teenager who fights spirits and ghosts, to even mention death except for only a few episodes.

About him knowing, my guess would be an unwavering "no". As I said before, he lacks all common sense. On top of that, Zim's loyalty to the Tallest blinds him even further. In his eyes, they are two flawless creatures, incapable of doing wrong; they wouldn't dream of doing anything deceitful to the Almighty ZIIIIIIIIM!! Only something drastic that would break his faith towards them would show him the truth, and all throughout the show; despite the chaos, the destruction, the trials and tribulations; nothing has broken the power of Zim's delusions.

Many of you beleive that Zim has no common sense and really doesn't think things through but I'm just asking if all of that is just for show. Maybe he really does think things through but just doesn't really try to take over Earth. He makes up stupid plans he knows won't work just to keep himself from getting depressed over the fact that the Tallest who he wanted more than anything to respect him lied to him and exiled him to earth. I just can't see Zim creating and fixing machines in his base and doing all those experiments without having common sense. You know the episode with Keef in it right? Zim ripped out his eyes with a machine? We all saw Zim created that machine HIMSELF. Now if Zim really didn't think things through while he was building it then why did it work? The machine probably would have blown up if Zim had just connected wires just anywhere without thinking. Zim shows that he is very smart also by keeping his base in tip top shape. He makes repairs on it all the time whenever Gir breaks something. He even has a equitment room. If Zim is smart enough to build machines then he should be smart enough to reliaze the Tallest sent him on a fake mission. He acts stupid and doesn't listen to the people who tell him he's on a fake mission because he's in extream denial. So now decide...has Zim got you all fooled? Or is he in fact just a poor soul living a lie? All i'm asking is...what if?

Maybe you should read the episode (scrip) "the trial" I think that's what it's called. I think the talles themselves told zim that the mission is fake. In that episode, Zim looks like he doesn't want to believe it.

I'd like to think he's in denial or just glosses over it. He is more than happy not to acknowledge it, and it leaves him content to continue on as normal.
