It's the age old question, "How far can I go before I fall off the cliff?" More commonly known as: "How short can the skirt be?" or "What kind of kissing is bad?" or "how many earrings is too many?" or as a statement "I'll stop if it gets too far."
I personally follow the example in the story of the truck drivers and
STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THE CLIFF EDGE AS I CAN.

This is a great question. We all pretty much agree on what is a sin and what isn't. However, everyone decides for themselves how far they will go up to that point. Many actions lead to other actions. I agree it is not wise to even go near the edge of the cliff. But sometimes we think we may be doing something that is "safe" when it really isn't.

Good question. I guess it all depends on how far you're really willing to go. In any of those situations KK pointed out. Here's what I think: The shorter the skirt, the farther you're willing to try to convince yourself it's not too short yet. Like what Snaksie said, we think we're doing something safe, that's really not. I just think that if you think what you're doing isn't going too close to the edge, you're just making it easier to keep doing it, with or without going even closer.
Did that make any sense whatsoever?

I see a lot of people who think that way. "Oh a few inches shorter and it will be fine" or "My shirt is modest because its long" (Even though it is very tight). People nit pick at everything. Sometimes I think we know when we are doing something bad, and still do it anyways because we want to. I've seen people who think they are being modest in dress because they cover up. But their shirts are so tight that you can see bra straps.
Really there is a reason behind every standard that we follow. For dressing modest, we show that we not only respect ourselves, but also Heavenly Father.
Many seem to think that they can pull away from sin, that they are fine. But the threat is VERY real. Really you will do yourself more damage if you think you can resist anything and are "Invincible" from Satan.
People can go on discussion what is considered modest, what kind of kissing is bad, how many earrings is too many......ect. But I know in my heart that any guy who nit picks at standards like that is not the guy for me. I want someone who is sure about the standards, not unsure what is right or not. If that makes since. ^^; I mean its good to ask if you are unsure..... but to me. A lot of people who ask questions like those are ones who are trying to find a loophole and get away from "slightly" being right and "slightly" sinning.

I agree that if you are not sure, it's probably better not to do it.
I know how I feel. However, I enjoy discussions with people and I like to hear everyone's input. It is like the discussion about Satan and intelligence. I know how I feel about it. But I would rather hear everyone's opinion before I state mine. I don't want to make it MY discussion. I want it to be OUR discussion. So, in most cases, I will ask to hear everyone's opinion first, then give mine. After that, anyone can disagree with me and we all can discuss all opinions given.
It is the same way whenever I have to teach a lesson. I don't want to just sit and gab on and on and on (like I'm doing now). I would rather have all of the class talk and share how we think. As the teacher, I can lead the discussion, but I feel it is better to get everyone involved.
And I am always open to learning something new. If someone shares an opinion or tells me something I didn't know before, all the better. Sometimes starting off a discusiion with my opinion shuts others out. For example Babs told a story about a prophet the other day that I had never heard before. I love learning and I'll never feel I'm done while here on earth. I believe the wiser we get, the more we find out how much we don't know. Just my opinion. smile

We all know it's best not to jump over the edge of a cliff. But it is safer to not even walk up and look over the edge!

To me it's more like walking down a spiraling starcase from the light into the dark. The whole thing with the cliff metephor is that the line seems to be right on the edge while if you take a step over that line you fall off. With the staircase you are continually making decision to where you are either asending or desending. Some of our choices or reasonings mark our path through that downward spiral. Of course we still have the choice to make our way back up. Were as with the cliff, once you fall it's near impossible to get back up.
But enough of what I think about the metephor. We are all counciled by the prophets on what we should do/wear/eat/drink/say so if we stop doing that then we've gone too far whether we reason it or not. No matter how many times we tell ourselves that it's okay, it's still not.

I agree that certain sins do take you downward like a spiral staircase. However, I disagree that all sins are equal. We know certain sins need to berepented of between you and Heavenl Father, others need to be cleared up with your bishop, others need to go to the stake president and then there are some that will get you excommunicated. The Lord speaks of an unpardonable sin. So, some sins are more grave than others. However, the scriptures also state in Alma 45:16 the Lord cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance. So, ALL sins make you unclean and as it says in Romans 3:23, No unclean thing can dwell with God. We must try to avoid sin, but we are imperfect and we're going to sin.
The cliff I was speaking of refers going from one sin to a worse one. If you are doing inapropriate things with your boyfirend/girfriend, you are definitely sinning. However, to think "well, we've already screwed up, so let's just go ahead and have sex," would be a terrible mistake. That is one type of cliff. You were definitely wrong to start petting, however it would be much worse to commit fornication. Don't get me wrong, THEY BOTH ARE BAD!!! But fornicating is worse than petting. That is why I said, "Stay away from the cliff!" If you don't approach the edge to look over, you won't have the chance of falling off.
All sins are bad, but some are worse. None should be looked on as ok. The Holy Ghost is with us to help us know what is right and what is wrong. However, the Holy Ghost can leave if we do not keep ourselves worthy of having Him as a constant companion.

I look at it more like a muddy hill. Ever tired walking up a muddy hill? You slip a lot. If you sin then it started you down on a slippery slope and it is hard to get back up, depending on the sin. Sometimes you slid down far, or it could be a step or two. No matter what, I think it is easier to play it safe and just do the best you can. You can't ask for anything better. People make mistakes. Some bigger than others. So big you may think "Aw how can you do that? That's so big!"....
I'm just glad I'm not judging anyone in the afterlife. XD

Vinstepula, I love your description by the way.
We know what is right and what isn't.
If you'll feel the need to test the waters or look over the edge sort to speak is up to you. It's also up to you to determine your boundaries, limits, standards, ect.
We have perfect guild line to help us along the way and should do our best to follow that path. What you choose to do is your choice, and life is full of them.
