My Godmother was walking at 8 months. My twin and I were walking at 10 months. Mike was at 15 months.
When did your children or you first walk?

I would like to point out that as our babies now sleep on their backs instead of stomachs, children now take longer to walk then older generations.
So when your mom, grandma, mother-in-law is saying, "Why isn't your child walking? ALL of my kids were by that age!" just blow it off.
Rowan started walking around 10 months. Me, 7 months. Anyone else, I have no clue. biggrin
However, acceptable range this day and age is 8-15 months. And even at 15 months, they just send them in to check to make sure there's not muscle problems that are contributing.

I think with Mike it was not enough encouragement and/or laziness. He sheepishly agrees. He said that he was always out and about in a stroller. Not that he remembers it, it's just what his parents told him.
They're not really the encouraging type, honestly =(

Yeah, the kids who are constantly in their carseat/stroller/bouncer/exersaucer, etc. are going to be at a disadvantage.
Tummy time is a MUST. And you can make it fun. Once you kiddo can start batting at things, it becomes REALLY fun.
The toys where your kid lays on their back with things above their head... well, I think they're rather useless.
You can get bouncers where they bat at toys infront of them and they sit more upright, which is going to help the muscles in their back and neck develop. Also, for tummy time, there's the toys with mirrors and lights that go RIGHT infront of their faces, so they're encouraged to raise their heads, arch their backs, and if it's out of reach, they're encouraged to crawl.
The more reason you give them to move, they more they're want to. The opportunities you give them to build up the muscles needed, and to practice, the sooner they'll walk.
Granted, there are the children who have all the reason in the world to walk/crawl/etc and just don't because they have decent speech and can have things given to them. In that case, when they want, say, the pink bunny, go to give it to them, but don't HAND it to them. They can work to get it, if they're big enough.

My brother and I both walked around 16 months. My mom and aunt said something like 10 - 16 months is considered normal/average (etc).

I feel dumb but what is tummy time? I haven't been looking things up online about that and I've been meaning to pick up What To Expect The First Year but getting to a store is so difficult for me. Not getting there but walking inside >.<
