Modist Gargoyles Too cool for a real title!
The Premise
It is modern-day. A small clan of gargoyles have arrived in Durem, and made their home atop the Church of Mod. They have been traveling for a long time, away from the humans that persecuted them, attacked them, and destroyed their rookery. Many of their clanmates have not survived the battle.
They live for a short time on top of the Church, staying out of sight of the humans. They hunt and patrol with much caution, lest they be discovered.
The elder members of the clan don't trust humans at all. They don't like settling down at the Church, and they especially don't like hiding. The younger adults argue that gargoyles are not meant to be nomads, and must protect their home. The youngest, still considered hatchlings, just want to go out and enjoy themselves at night, patrolling or not.
The clan is in shambles, barely holding itself together. And it is these arguments that cause the clan to not pay as much attention to concealing themselves as they should.
For there is one human that has heard sounds on top of the Church, and may make plans to investigate....

Gargoyles InformationTo role-play as a Gargoyle, one must understand the Gargoyle. First off, all my information is derived from the Gargoyles Bible, as written by Greg Weisman himself. I reccommend reading through this site to gain a general knowledge of biology, culture, and human/gargoyle relations. I will go over the basics here. BiologyQuote: Probably the first thing to remember about true gargoyles is what they are not. They are NOT magical beings. They are not sculpted statues magically brought to life. They are a kind of animal, as dinosaurs were, elephants are and human beings pretend not to be. Despite the occasional and sparing use of magic, this is a fairly Darwinistic series. In pre-historic times gargoyles evolved, perhaps out of dinosaurs, into a nocturnal species that would hibernate during the day by turning to stone (or at least into an organic substance that absolutely resembles stone). Now this may sound scientifically improbable, but consider the chameleon or the electric eel; both can accomplish miracles of nature, objectively as remarkable as turning into stone. And back before the iron age, turning to stone made evolutionary sense. The gargoyle species (alert and powerful at night) were protected during their daytime slumber from tooth, claw and primitive tools by their stone transformation. Around this time, gargoyle evolution divided down two tracks (much as humans and other primates are thought to have common ancestors). The main track evolved into sentient beings with wings. The secondary track, commonly called Gargoyle Beasts, were far less intelligent and lacked, real wings. Both species turn to stone during the day. Gargoyles are stone by day, and flesh-and-blood by night. The "transformation" takes place at dawn and dusk, respectively. At night, they are vulnerable to many of the same things as humans; injury, disease, starvation, etc. Their hide is thicker than humans, but not impervious. Gargoyles are naturally stronger than humans. They also do not fatigue easily, as stone sleep completely refreshes and revitalizes them. They have very sharp teeth, and claws on both their hands and feet. These claws can gouge lines in stone and even some metals. They can use these claws to climb up walls, cliffs, trees, and buildings. Gargoyles do not fly - they glide. They cannot flap their wings to gain speed or height, but they are adept at using updrafts and wind currents to soar long distances. If there is no updraft, they must climb a tall tree, cliff, or building to get the proper height. Most Gargoyles' wings can clasp over them to resemble a cape or cloak. This is generally referred to as "caping their wings" Quote: If a gargoyle were wounded during the night, the transformation to stone would seal and heal any cuts, bruises or abrasions. If properly set, broken bones would knit during the day. Sore muscles would be refreshed. But a dismembered limb could not be reattached. And if a gargoyle were to die at night, he'd still be dead during the day. In fact, a nighttime gargoyle corpse would not turn to stone. (Again, it's a biological process. When life ceases, there's nothing to activate the process.) During the daytime hibernation, gargoyles are in a deep coma-like sleep. They cannot be awakened prematurely. They are unaware of what is taking place around them. Gargoyles do not age while in hibernation mode. Thus a typical gargoyle life-span would be about twice that of a typical human. However, gargoyles mature half as fast. So a thirty-eight year old gargoyle would possess the equivalent mental, emotional and physical maturity of a nineteen year old human. Only the quantity of his experiences would betray his true age. Being stone, they are protected from casual damage. But they are not invulnerable. Take a sledgehammer to a hibernating gargoyle and a person could maim or kill that gargoyle, could reduce it to dust. (And again, a gargoyle that is destroyed while in hibernation will not turn back to flesh and blood at night but will remain as stone fragments.) Keyed to the sunset, a gargoyle's internal clock will begin the awakening process. The gargoyle will turn back to flesh and blood from the inside out, until all that remains is a thin layer of exoderm, which then cracks and is shed by the gargoyle as a snake sheds its skin. Generally, a waking gargoyle flexes, stretches and/or explodes out of the thin exoderm of stone, leaving fragments of grit and gravel. once awake, the gargoyle is alert, refreshed, rejuvenated, energized and healed of any injury that might have occurred the previous night. CultureGargoyles protect. It's who they are, the very core of their being. A gargoyle "can no more stop protecting the [rookery, castle, city, etc.] than breathing the air." A gargoyle clan is a close-knit unit. Elders are respected, the Clan Leader is looked up to and obeyed. Hatchlings have no sense of "parents"; instead, they are children of the entire clan. Gargoyles mate for life, much like humans do (in theory). Gargoyles may or may not fight with weapons; generally, they have no need, as their claws and tail are usually enough to protect themselves. Also, all gargoyles in a clan are trained as warriors, so as to better protect the [castle, etc.]. Magic is not unknown to gargoyles, much like it's not unknown to humans. But magic is an ancient, secret art, with consequences and risks. For the most part, gargoyles don't trust it, and want nothing to do with it.

Character ProfilesIf you're not sure how to create a profile, or can't decide on information, or need help creating a history, please PM or IM me. I'll be more than happy to help.
When you've completed your profile, PM it to me. (I'd like to keep this thread as uncluttered as possible) Feel free to be as detailed as you like.Quote: Character Name: Alliance Age: 49 Relationship with Clan: Leader Personality: Alliance generally tries to stay in good humor, but is prone to periods of reflection and self-doubt. She is adjusting to her new role as Clan Leader, and tends to second-guess herself. But she does have a good heart, and is an able leader. Enjoys: Music, dogs, hot dogs and chicken. Detests: Pidgeons, cats, pickles. Attitude towards Humans: Indifferent Brief History: Alliance was an adolescent when the clan was attacked at their previous home. She cared for the few hatchlings that survived, in a big-sisterly way. As a result, she gets along with them better than the other adults do. She is a very capable warrior. She fights without weapons and she wants nothing to do with magic. Quote: Character Name: Ruevian Age: 65 Relationship with Clan: Second-in-Command Personality: Cynical, bitterly sarcastic, morbid, but secretly protective of her clan, despite the crap she gives them. Prone to brooding and mood swings. Enjoys: Artistic endeavors, teasing the hatchlings, reading, watching horror movies on the television, chess. Detests: Weakness, having to be in charge, losing in any competition, not being able to profit from her artwork, humans. Attitude towards Humans: Anger, distrust, resentment. Brief History: Ruevian was a young adult when the clan was attacked, and thus had full awareness of the betrayal and has never been able to see humans the same way. Before the attack, the clan elders had discussed Ruevian becoming the next leader, due to her strategic thinking under fire and skill as a warrior, but her flat refusal to take responsibilty put that idea to rest. Now, she is Second-in-Command by neccesity rather than choice, and looks forward to the fact that, since Alliance is younger than she is, Ruevian will likely die before she has to take up the gauntlet. She disappears frequently from the clan and doesn't talk about where she goes when she's gone, but when she returns, she simply does what she always does -- tease the younger gargoyles and express herself through art. Quote: Character Name: Lasreaine Age: 44 Relationship with Clan: Combat Trainer Personality: Content with her lot in life, Lasreaine cares only to protect her clan-mates and their home. Everything else comes in second, including her happiness. Las tries to be noble, honorable, and fair in all things, and as such often comes off as being cold. While she would never do anything that would make her seem less than a model of lawfulness, she is not above suggesting lesser ideas to others. She has a great deal of patience, though she tries not to show it, and will often be softer than she should on her trainees, for she remembers what it was like to be forced to be rigid. Enjoys: Classical and traditonal music from around the world, reading, fighting. Detests: Unseemly noise, traffic, wayward fledglings. Attitude towards Humans: Watchful, but not above contact. Brief History: Las was fairly young when the clan lost their original home, but she was able to decide that bad stuff just happened even when she was young. Still, she devoted herself to combat training, vowing not to let her next home be destroyed while she was able to hold a talon against any attacker. Lasreaine became a fierce fighter and soon was helping the old fighting master with training the young gargoyles. Quote: Character Name: Gendou Mitsui Age: 35 Relationship with Clan: Unknown Personality: Intelligent, ruthless, driven. Enjoys: Books, strategy games, manipulating people, things and situations Detests: Weakness, ignorance, bigotry, irrationality, emotionalism Brief History: The young entrepreneur behind the rapid rise of Mitsui Heavy Industries is viewed by most humans as an example of someone rising from nothing to the pinnacle of power. High atop his skyscraper just outside of Durem, Gendou Mitsui has risen to the top of the power ladder in the aftermath of the Gambino / Von Helson war that ravaged much of both Durem and Isle de Gambino. His assets include businesses affecting every aspect of Gaian life, but the company to earn his personal attention is defense contractor Mitsui Heavy Industries. After a series of Von Helson Dynamics military-grade directed-energy weapons were discovered in the hands of local gangs, Gendou had ordered his R&D teams to work on battle armor concepts. After discovering the strange creatures living above the damaged church, however, he began funneling more and more research time into designing a prototype armor that could match and exceed the physical abilities of the gargoyles. He has also spent no small amount of time, energy and resources on research into the paranormal and the supernatural, being a believer in leaving no stone unturned. Despite this, his Abraxas Project has borne no fruit - yet. And now he makes plans for a personal introduction to the stone creatures above the church. Armor: Heavy Power-Assisted Exoskeleton. Crystal-alligned steel armor. Fully flight-capable. Built-in air-filtration and limited oxygen supply. Micro-fusion reactor. Capable of mounting a variety of weapon systems both internally and externally. Constantly being refined and upgraded. Quote: Character Name: Moryera Age: 32 Relationship with Clan: Hatchling Personality: Cheerful and lighthearted, though she can be serious if the situation calls for it. Prefers to just jump into things instead of wasting time planning. Enjoys: Exploring, a good joke, shiny things. Detests: People with no sense of humor. Attitude towards Humans: Curiosity and amusement Brief History: Mory was only 12 when the clan was attacked, so she doesn't remember much of their old home. She has the barest hint of a "something bad happened to us and we had to leave" memory, but other than that, nothing. Since she was so young at the time of the attack, she has no idea why the older members of her clan hate humans so much. Mory thinks they're pretty funny. Quote: Charactor name: Kyraa Age: 31 Relationship with Clan: Hatchling Personality: Gullible, pretty easy to fool. Insatiable curiousity and desire to know everything about everyone. Has an odd sense of humor, making the only time she's funny is when she didn't mean to be. Enjoys: Drawing, singing, music, kittens, and avocados. Detests: Pizza, birds, being fooled. Attitude towards Humans: Curious, confused, and delighted. Brief History: Kyraa was 11 when the clan was forced to move. Having nearly no memory of what they had gone through then, she has a streak of recklessness, and likewise, getting scolded. She takes a great interest in watching humans as they move around and do their business. Quote: Character name: Katane Age: 31 Relationship with Clan: Hatchling Personality: Whimsical, yet intelligent. Though she is most often quiet, calm, and serious, her curiousity makes it hard for her to contain her excitement for new things. Very empathetic. Enjoys: People watching, reading, hiding, gliding, junk food. Detests: Cold weather, rats, rules. Attitude towards Humans: Think Ariel from "The Little Mermaid". She thinks people are the most interesting things in the world. She wants to be friends with them, but is afraid of what her clan would think. Brief History:Though Katane was only 11 when the clan was attacked, she has a very good memory, and occasionally has vivid dreams about the event. Despite this, she still has a love and curiousity for humans (after all, it was other people who did that). She reads books voraciously, and retains information very well. Though she shows promise in combat training, her attention wanders so much that she spends more time getting scolded then praised. Quote: Character Name: Kiji Age: 46 Relationship with Clan: Currently Clanless Personality: Warm and friendly towards those she knows; skittish, nervous and a little paranoid around those she doesn't. Enjoys: Rain, bonfires, physical contact, music Detests: Complete darkness, snow, social conflict Attitude towards Humans: Distrustful, wary but insatiably curious about technology, entertainment and pop culture. Brief History: Kiji is clanless. Her kin-clan was destroyed by humans when she was still a hatchling and the few that escaped were wanderers for roughly 30 years. Humans eventually caught up to them and destroyed the remaining survivors, leaving only Kiji and a few of the garg-beasts alive. Since then, Kiji has wandered alone, keeping herself hidden as best she can and never venturing too close to the dwellings of humans. Unfortunately, due to a handicap that has rendered her nearly blind in deep darkness, she's been forced to stay closer to areas with artificial light, risking discovery. In coming closer to human civilization, though, she's been noticing something that lives on the rooftops...could it be? Others like herself? Her social and insatiablly curious nature won't allow her to ignore the possibility for long. Quote: Character Name: Deep Vermillion Age: 134 Relationship with Clan: Former first in command; now acts as the clan elder. Personality: Somewhat calmed by age, the oldest of the gargoyles is learning to enjoy "retirement" from the position as leader - however, adjusting to not being in charge is a gradual process. Though he tires more easily now that his body has grown older and his temper has cooled, he is still capable of displays of both power and anger (especially if his friends are threatened) - albeit not as frequently as in his youth. His once-booming voice has grown hoarse and gravelly, and now he speaks in a thoughtful, commanding tone and prefers not to mince words. He has full confidence in the new leader - sometimes moreso than herself - and offers advice whenever it's needed. Recently, he's taken to studying both the literature and music of the human world, perhaps in an effort to understand it better, perhaps just as a way to relax. Detests: Losing his strength as his body grows weaker, seeing people in the clan fare ill, humans. Attitude towards Humans: Bitter and distrustful. Brief History: Born on a cold November night in 1867, Deep Vermillion was once a fierce warrior and a leader loved by his clan and feared by his enemies. In his youth, he was brash and impulsive, but learned self-control from his elders as he matured. From his early years, he grew up with Alliance's father as his friend and confidante. As the years went by, he was eventually given the responsibility of leading his clan and with Alliance's father as his advisor, he shouldered the burden to the best of his ability. The one night, the humans struck and left the clan in shambles, and though he did what he could to save those that could be saved, he still blames himself for the deaths of so many of his people and his friends. Realizing that the clan needed someone young and vigorous to lead them in these new, trying times - as well as accepting that his strength was slowly waning - he relinquished his position as leader to the young Alliance, with his full blessing. Quote: [Avatar Pending] Character Name: Deoridhe Age: 40 Relationship with Clan: Adopted Hatchling Personality: Shy - even around those she knows, timid around those she doesn't know, careful, intellectual, curious, delicate, obscure, and prone to getting distracted by shiny and/or interesting things Enjoys: reading (esp. philosophy, history, religion, magic), crafts, riddles and puzzles Detests: Loud noises, rudeness, physical humor, humiliation, violence Attitude towards Humans: Terrified of actual humans, curious about how their minds and society works when humans aren't around Brief History: Deoridhe was the daughter of the delegate from the near East who came to meet with the Gargoyle clan shortly before it was destroyed. She was old enough to remember the human's attack, but not old enough to really process or understand it, leaving her with a phobia of actual humans that her curiosity about their ways does little to countermand. This has proved itself to be a severe block in any sort of combat situation, even training; luckily Deoridhe is very fast, and so can run away with incredible skill. She knows a few spells, a legacy from her mother who was a powerful mage, and she would love to learn more if she could find a teacher. Although she patrols like the rest of the clan, her fearfulness has lead her to find the best ways to do so without being seen. Quote: [avatar pending] Character Name: Weevil Age: 45 Relationship with Clan: Rookery-sister Personality: Growing up is hard, as Weevil is finding out more and more each day. Seeing Alliance being made clan leader has made Weevil realize, more than ever, that she's not a hatchling anymore. Struggling to find her place in the clan, Weevil is trying to leave behind her bouncy, childish self and find in her the serious adult she feels is needed in the clan. Although this isn't always hard and, sometimes, Weevil finds herself overcompensating and being overly serious and hard-hearted, she's starting to feel better about who she is and who she wants to be. Slightly idolizes Ruevian. Enjoys: Being with her clan, laughing, sports, the stars. Detests: Rain, humans, vegetables, feeling inferior. Attitude towards Humans: Distrustful, scornful. Brief History: Weevil was barely adolescent when the clan was attacked and retained a few horrible memories about the attack. Her hatred for humans stems from this and, although she would never admit it, from Ruevian's own views. Quote: Character Name: Terianis Age: 58 Relationship with Clan: Transient Personality: Terianis spends little of his time with the others, though he tends to defer to them when they are around. He spends most of his time away from the church, watching over the happenings of the surrounding town, like a predator that never strikes. He always speaks in a quiet, soft voice, but the look in his eyes shows an emotion he never has revealed to the others. Enjoys: Darkness and silence. Detests: Loud white noise such as loud conversation or heavy machinery, or even bright lights. Attitude towards Humans: Wary, almost afraid. Brief History: Terianis wasn't born in the clan, nor has he been in the area long. He was recently displaced as much of his own clan was destroyed, scattering the remnants across the other nearby clans. Some point before he joined the clan above the church of mod, he became ill with a slow-wasting disease. He was treated by those of his previous clan, but has never fully recovered. This leaves him looking old, and scarred. When stone during the day, this look persists, as if he had seen many great and powerful storms, wearing away at him with the sureness of the tides. This is part of the cause for his distance from the others, as he sees himself as deformed.

Rules
1: First off, and most importantly, you do not control other characters. You control your own. I'll allow generic actions such as "Everyone was shocked by this revelation", but only for big things.
2: Keep things mostly realistic. Obviously, this is fantasy, but there are still laws of physics.
3: I cannot stress this enough. If you're not sure about anything, ask us. Don't know what you can or can't do? Want to run an idea off of someone? Need more info about the world? Ask.
4: I would appreciate that all posts be in narrative form. Most - if not all - of the current players already do so, but might as well make it official.
That's mostly all. But above all, enjoy yourselves.

Various Information
Just as a final note, here's some random things that didn't fit into the above posts.
Post Notation
[EXAMPLE] This is a GM notation. I won't use these very often. I'm not planning on using them at all, really, but if I need to spur on the story, I will. I can direct these to either individual players and/or their characters, or everyone.
(OOC smile I will use this for my Out of Character talk. Which I'll try to cut down on.
NPCs
NPCs are always a sticky subject in an open RP. Generally, I'll let you take care of any NPCs you feel you need to in your post, such as random criminals or animals or people. If you wish to create an NPC that only you can control, like a pet or servant, make sure you specify this. Any major NPCs will be handled by myself.

The setting...
The sun inched lower on the horizon as a seagull circled its way onto the top of the ruined church. It landed upon a stone statue of a winged demon, and started cleaning its feathers. The statue it had lighted upon was of a fierce-looking woman, fangs bared, arms outstretched and reaching for an unseen victim. Her wings were flared magnificently, and her tail appeared to be thrashing in anger.
The statue was one of many on the rooftop, all depicting demons in varying poses of attack and violence. Each was unique, and each was an equally terrifying sight. Fearsome guardians of the ruins were they.
The sun finally dipped below the horizon. All was still in this area of Durem.
But things were not as they appeared. The statue started to crack, and small slivers of stone flaked off and fell to the stones below. The seagull took flight, leaving behind it a scene straight from a nightmare. A demon burst from the stone shell - wings flaring, tail thrashing, eyes glowing red in the night. An unearthly howl arose from within her as she flexed her muscles. All around her, the other statues came to life in a similar fashion.
Just as they did every night.

Alliance flared her wings as she stretched her muscles. She absent-mindedly rubbed her arm as she stepped off of her perch. She had sustained a rather nasty cut the other night, but stone sleep had healed it.
She looked around as her clanmates awoke. A shudder trailed down her spine as she remembered that they were all her responsibility now. The previous Clan Leader had formally stepped down the night before, appointing her in his place.
Alliance didn't feel very much like a leader.
Pushing those negative thoughts away, she smiles at her clan, and sits down on a bench that she brought up to the roof long ago.

Kyraa woke and broke free of her sleep, yawning and bending backwards to stretch. Righting herself, she shook off the last remaining traces of the "stone" on herself, brushing the arm a bird had been on earlier with extra vigor.
Satisfied, she walked over and took a seat on the floor next to Alliance's bench and flexed her toes, already humming to herself. Taking a moment to survey the clan around her, Kyraa noticed small details about each one of them. It made her smile to do that.

Directly on Alliance's right, the statue of a rather feral-looking female with graceful, backward sweeping horns cracked in a multitude of places. A sudden explosion from inside the statue sent the cracked stone flying, and to an outsider, it probably looked like nothing had changed. The female was still grey, and the angry, feral hiss on her face remained.
Only now she moved, tossing back her head to shake off the remnants of the stone skinn that still stubbornly clung to her white hair. She opened her eyes, and they briefly glowed red before returning to their normal, eerie shade of translucent light grey. She glanced at her newly appointed leader blankly, then snorted, hopping off her perch and scowling.

Alliance glanced over at her Second with a troubled expression on her face.
There's another situation I'm not ready for, she thought.
"Ruevian," she called, standing up. "Are you still upset?"

With her back to Alliance, Ruevian stretched, crossing her arms behind her head and fanning out her rather large wings momentarily before caping them around her shoulders.
"Upset?" she asked flatly. "Try frustrated." She glanced over her shoulder and lowered her arm, eyes meeting Alliance's. The scowl had faded, slightly. "We can't all be earnest young things with something to prove. Just don't screw up."
She turned and headed inside, announcing to no one in particular, "I'm hungry."

Gazing out the windows of his penthouse office suite, Gendou paced slowly, never taking his eyes off the still-damaged steeples of the Church of Mod. Repairs had been progressing slowly, at least to his mind, though he had no doubt that the Church's current financial woes had something to do with that.
As he paced, he found his mind wandering back to the sporadic reports he had recieved of something haunting the higher, and still closed off, towers of the Church. It had taken some doing, but satellite photographs confirmed the reports - the statues atop the towers were disappearing at night, only to re-appear in different locations by morning.
Normally, Gendou would have written this off as mere prankery, were it not for one satellite image taken just after sunset: a shadowy image of one of the statues moving without assistance. Curious about the bizzare occurence, he had set some of his Abraxas researchers to work, combing historical archives for references to 'living' statuary.
The results, needless to say, had left him breathless with anticipation.

Something to prove?
Taken aback by this statement, Alliance hesitated for a moment before composing herself. She turned around, surveying the rest of her clan, hiding the steadily-growing unease in her stomach. There are some things that never change, she thought, no matter how you try. She sighed as she caped her wings over her shoulders.
"Kyraa," she asks the marble-white girl nearby, "would you mind helping me start breakfast?"
