Some of us (mainly me) have been thinking on the idea of making some composer based t-shirts...in a "band t-shirt" format, essentially. I thought we should take this discussion here to the guild to see if anyone would be interested in getting involved in this type of project..or being a customer. For further information, here's the topic that it started in: http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8725477&page=3(Check pages 3 and 4) In case anyone is wondering...I do have a few details worked out. I've talked to a few people already who've said they would buy the shirts. I intend to continue probing the potential audience/customers at various message boards to get an idea of what kind of starting selling base we would have. I also feel that I should also note that one of the people who said he would buy one is a site programmer and he agreed to throw a site our way at some point, if we could find a host for it. He also said we could work out arrangements for advertisement on a site he's designing as of now (it's a metal webzine that will also expand into other areas...in the section of music reviews at least), so we would have some decent advertising. Comments, business proposals? xp

Well, I now have three potential buyers without even asking on a message board yet. As I said, one agreed to design a site. Another one of them agreed to help with designing artwork for us. 3nodding
EDIT: I've also found another friend who agreed that she'd buy some shirts, and also agreed to help with the project. We're simply working out the details on what she'll do to help, right now.

I don't know how much help I'll actually be with the business part of it, but I'd be willing to help in any way. I wonder how much silkscreens cost. I'd love to have one jsut for the hell of it but if could make some money that would be awesome as well.

On the contary. Performer t-shirts was your idea. xp And I meant that I've been seriously considering the idea more than everyone else. And hm....if you can't make an actual investment on it (i.e. getting shirts printed) I suppose you could help with getting letters out to the composers' families and possibly anyone we'd need to contact for permission to use some paintings, as that would need to be done, too. I'm mainly looking for business partners right now, though.

What we need is some good market research and some investment, as a pillow.
Or, we could get that later.

I actually kind of meant when I said that that the performers should be marketing themselves, and obviously most of the composers are dead and can't market themselves. You definitely have been considering the idea most seriously. When you say you're looking for business partners, do you mean you want people to invest?

Aye, I do. I'll be willing to make the first investment in shirts, however, I think it would be better if we had people from here in different states or countries selling, too. So we could have them available to ship/sell to locals from various areas, you know?
Yes, it would be better. I'm planning to do a bit of "probing the market" so to speak on a few message boards, I was just waiting for a response here, first. I'll post up the results. Now it's just a matter of figuring out which boards are worth probing....if anyone else is interested in probing some of the various boards they go to, feel free to. Perhaps ask around locally, too. I would do that...but, at this point, it's utterly pointless for me to.

I'm thinking about buying a silkscreen. I found one for a reasonable price. I've also found a wholesale t-shirt retailer. If I end up going through with this, it would save a lot of money on t-shrit printing. I have to go now-- I'll come back tomorrow.

Sure, let me know. I still need to check on message boards, though..for the polling of the audience, you know. I haven't got time yet. >_<

Another way to sell the shirts would be to directly partner with other companies -- If you've ever been to places like karmaloop.com, etc? Obviously, most of their audience don't know who these composers are, but if there were some companies with the same idea but a slightly different audience, that might work. Like we could sell them to the Julliard store! Or you know, something like that.

Another idea I had would be to buy some liscensing rights for concert performances. You know..like symphony performances in the area, if your area has seasons.

Harvested Sorrow Another idea I had would be to buy some liscensing rights for concert performances. You know..like symphony performances in the area, if your area has seasons. Our symphony has a gift store -- It's pretty lame, though. Lots of oversized clothing for old people and tacky treble-clef accessories. They had a couple stretchy shirts one time that had musical notes on them, and I tried stretching them, and in between the folds they said "Jesus." It cracked me up and I told the gift store lady and she was horrified. So -- that's just a little aside -- I think that it would be really cool if there were more items that were geared toward a younger audience, because it's really a turnoff to young people who try to come to the symphony that anyone under about 60 makes up about 5% of the audience. Of course, this leads back into the "keeping classical music alive" toping that I had in the C/J/B forum, so I'll stop. It's a good idea, though.

Yeah. The San Antonio symphony sells shirts that say "San Antonio Symphony" during concerts...along with CDs of artists that have performed with them, and composer albums..but those are always greatest hits albums/compilation albums that are over-priced, so they're worthless. xp

I HIGHLY suggest that everyone check out the links mentioned, as with the exception of one (at an extremely slow forum) there's been a good to great response for pretty much all of them.
